HELL’O COLLECTIVE: BALANCE

Opening on Friday 01.06 at 19:00, Urban Spree Galerie invites you to the Opening of “Balance“, a solo presentation of new works by the famed belgian duo Hell’O Collective in our main galerie space and their first solo show in Germany.

Running in parallel with their retrospective museum solo show at the BAM in Mons (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mons, Belgium), “Balance” brings a brand new series of paintings on canvas and on paper to the Berlin audience.

For the Brussels-based duo, “Balance” reflects upon the constant search of the equilibrium between shape, color, and momentum in their painting practice.

Hell’O will also sign their new monograph “Untitled Oddyssey“, published in early May by CFC Editions, and Urban Spree Prints will also release 2 screenprints specially made by the duo for the occasion.

Hell’O is a belgian artistic duo consisting of Antoine Detaille and Jérôme Meynen, active in murals as well as studio works and installations.

Several characteristics of their art indicate a filiation with the middle-age universe close to Jerome Bosch: an elegant and precise graphism, a taste for multiple, intertwined universes, and abundant references to a corpus of grotesque iconography, albeit perfectly mastered. Abstracted human bodies are among the many recurrent elements that are present in their paintings together with abstract, geometric signs, creating an overall rich personal mythology.

Birds in Row / Life in Vacuum / Bystander

Birds in Row -> Listen

Birds in Row is an experimental hardcore punk/metal trio who write punitive, exasperated tunes with equisitite, dark textures. Their members maintain a level of anonymity to pin the focus on the music itself rather than those who create it. Birds in Row is committed to a true DIY ethic, placing all their efforts into the creation of a deep fan-to-artist connection.

Life in Vacuum -> Listen

Life In Vacuum make a messy, chaotic brand of aggressive weirdo punk sure to get you amped. They easily balance technical song construction with raw, free-form jam sections to create an intense, gnarly listening experience. Their live show takes the bands grizzly, brutal sound to the next level — showcasing their powerful, sonically oppressive presence.

Jonni Cheatwood: Tyger Tyger

Urban Spree Galerie presents „Tyger Tyger„, the first solo show in Europe of the L.A. based visual artist Jonni Cheatwood.

URBAN SPREE STUDIO, JUNE 2019

The American artist spent a month at Urban Spree in Berlin as an Artist-in-Residence to create 12 large format artworks that will be exhibited in the galerie from July 5th, 2019 to August 4th, 2019.

Jonni Cheatwood incorporates found fabrics into his canvases, which he himself cuts and saws, in order to create variations and move away from the uniform surface of the canvas. Some fabrics have geometric patterns whereas some others are figurative. The Residency enabled Jonni to source local fabrics, found in the Turkish market or in the street. Once the patchwork is assembled, Cheatwood paints blocks of colors on it, adding multiple layers of paint and agglomerating texture, freely outlining the shapes to convey dynamism and balance.

Jonni Cheatwood is an abstract painter whose work is about balance, shape and color and who can be related to the „Figuration narrative“ movement. Here, Roy Lichtenstein makes an appearance in most canvases of the series as a reference and a cultural bridge as some fabrics sourced in Berlin include some embroidered stories derived from the American painter.

Jonni’s work is also close to the post-graffiti movement as we can also view his color shapes and black outlines as deconstructed graffiti.

Overall, his work is very dynamic, balanced and superbly colorful.

„Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?“

https://qual.bandcamp.com/album/the-ultimate-climax

Septic discharges of cybernetic disease seeps from every orifice. Welcoming a post apocalyptic nuclear winter. With terror and restless chaos cometh the digital age condemned to be digitally transformed. Cometh hybrids, mutated humans a depletion of organics.

Dry woods and fire temples.

Modular and mayhem a chant for death and all her joy. Rituals for renewal the infinity of pain and chaos to come. Mechanized doused into illusion the earth has long ended and humans are actually finished. Balance your pagan spirit from years past realize it’s not too late for civilization to rejuvenate.

Unhuman: Release Party

INSTRUMENTS OF DISCIPLINE PRESENTS:

Live Acts:

#UNHUMAN (GR/DE)
Unhuman will perform his first live set in 5 years, presenting his uncut vision of dystopic noise.

Human Larvae (DE)
„Human Larvae’s ability to incorporate and balance more aggressive passages of junk metal clangor, swarming distortion, and ferocious vocals with hopelessly bleak and gloomy atmospheres immediately sets them apart from anything else in the scene today, though reference points can be made to Gnawed, IRM, Grunt, and Theologian. On a whole, Behind Blinding Light stands on its own as a recording of great depth and compositional expertise, and can be regarded as a benchmark recording of pure and true industrial music.“ – Malignant Records

AMANDA KNOX (Debut show///IT)
Berlin based produceer Ayarcana plays his first show as Amanda Knox, expect live, electronic sludge.

ERSTWHILE (Berlin Debut///NLD)
Erstwhile is one of the monikers under which Kevin Jansen (Svartvit, Clamor, Qualm, Ratteknaeghen) presents his auditory output. This time around the sounds are rooted in tradition, paying hommage to the greats of the eighties through minimal power electronics dirges. Thematically the project deals with the fragility embedded in our everyday lives.

Live Aktion/Installation/Performance:

Nullam Rem Natam (GR/DE)
Originating from the Latin phrase “nullam rem natam”- means no thing born, an emphatic idiom for nothing.Nullam Rem Natam create and destroy. Their actions are reactions.Their reason is absurd and absurdity is chaos. Unfolding secrets, revealing fears, abusing the psyche. Hunters of intensity and seekers of purgation. An eternal circle, the serpent devouring its tail. Nullam Rem Natam are a group of actionists, composed in Berlin in 2016.
As resident artists of Liber Null Berlin, they commit visual sins and provoke the subconscious. Ignoring the limits and obeying to instincts, they practice and perform their experiments
using sacramental and ceremonial methods.

DJS:

Espectra Negra
Espectra Negra is a very consequent project from Berlin which focuses on Industrial & Ritualistic Noise. She keeps the old industrial sound mixed with shamanic elements and sound art. After her first self-release album „Savage Justice“ which included two collaborative tracks with Annie Stubbs (UK/Suddent Infant/Devotion) -vocals- and John Murphy (R.I.P) (AU/SPK/LastDominionLost) -drums- she reached serious local and international resonance for her underground power and strong political content.

AGENCY
One half of OPERANT/IOD, Agency will close the night, mopping up the sludge on the dance floor.
