⊙ ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. ⊙
(Japan)

https://www.facebook.com/acidmotherstempleofficial
Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso Underground Freak Out (and subsequent offshoots) is a Japanese psychedelic space rock band, the core of which formed in 1995. The band is led by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and early in their career featured many musicians, but by 2004 the line-up had coalesced with only a few core members and frequent guest musicians.
The band has released albums frequently on a number of international record labels as well as the Acid Mothers Temple family record label, which was established in 1998 to document the activities of the whole collective.
“In a non-stop stream of thrilling noise, they segue from supercharged stomp-rock, through doomy choral chanting and frazzled go-go, to a thundering melee of atonal freakouts. Then on to a pulsating, echo-drenched disco-rock groove, which morphs into a motorik rhythm too rapid even for the autobahn, works itself into a squalling frenzy, breaks cover as a kind of galloping, syncopated, Underworld-with-rabies affair, and flows into a long, chiming trance number climaxing in a collective instrumental howl.” – David Bennun

⊙ SUNN TRIO ⊙
(Phoenix – Arizona)
https://sunntrio.bandcamp.com
https://www.facebook.com/sunntrio
Described as deep spirited, Arabic-music-tinged free jazz-punk and harsh exotica, Sunn Trio’s ever-evolving ensemble digests a number of genres, spitting them back out in creative destruction. Carrying on a long tradition of sun-beaten Phoenix punk, Sunn Trio evokes the sweltering and hallucinatory Arizona desert. Echoes of Sonny Sharrock, John McLaughlin, and Sir Richard Bishop can be heard in Joel Robinson’s fiery blurs of guitar. Imagine the Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 in full force, echoing from behind a curtain of bitter haze. Founded by Robinson in 2010, the ever-changing band has been constantly recording and releasing material, with a recent LP, Fayrus, on Germany’s Unrock Records.
“Wielding Indo-Arabian saz and white lightning six-string shrapnel amidst an alligator snapping turtle’s rhythm section, this trio-quartet-sextet may also sprout horns, flutes, animal skins, or shadow gamelan to faithfully demolish that whiny and predictable listening experience of today’s tepidly lazy, underachieving experimental music scene. Not a ’safe‘ environment.” – Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls
„There’s a woozy, heatstroke feel to the band’s innovative blend of surf rock, free jazz, mystical drone, and world music. Consistently recording and releasing material via self-distributed cassettes, the Trio’s sound mutates in concert, with fantastic flurries of distorted guitars butting up against mantric psychedelic saxophone runs and looping bass.“ – Jason Patrick Woodbury

VF#1 presents Der Schwund // Hystérie // Via Tirana

++++ SOUND OF MACHINES, VOCAL CHORDS AND INSTRUMENTS PLAYED BY HUMANS •̀.̫•́✧ ++++

DER SCHWUND (Berlin)
Listen 🔪 http://tiny.cc/cql44y
If D.A.F., the early Kraftwerk, Kurt Schwitters and Der Plan were to unite in one person, long haired and bent over a microphone, and work on a series of synthesizers, this would probably come closest to the overall experience of SCHWUND. One man, with one leg in the 80s, and with the other, too, chants calls to a metallic-melancholic trance dance that your body won’t reject. Twitching, jumping, jumping, man as material as organ as machine.

HYSTERIE (Le Turc Mecanique, Paris)
Listen 🔪 http://tiny.cc/gvl44y
Hydra with three heads crossing French song for bar pillars and synthetic sounds with an industrial tendency, assuming a frontal approach up to the bogeyman and a strong tendency to open it up to angry subjects, Hystérie embodies the second generation of the cold-indus sound that will terrorize you.

VIA TIRANA (Brighton, UK)
Listen 🔪 http://tiny.cc/twl44y
Via Tirana is the evolving musical project of an Albanian born Brighton based artist. The sound can be described as a synergy of electronic dance beats, live instrumentation and catchy vocal hooks.

Berlin- Praha Barter

After the first exhibition, titled „Praha Berlin Barter“ (March/April 2019) which was hosted by Urban Spree in Berlin, the gallery is this time being hosted by Trafo Gallery in Prague in a new group exhibition called „Berlin Praha Barter„.

Berlin Praha Barter

Preview: 16.05.2019
Exhibition: 17.05. – 23.06.2019

Curated by Pascal Feucher (Urban Spree)

In this second round, we have invited 11 visual artists of the Urban Spree family to exhibit artworks at Trafo Gallery:

The artists are representative of the new Berlin scene that emerged since the Fall of the Wall, starting with the precursor – Jim Avignon – quite known for his painted decors of many of the Berlin squatted clubs of the early 90’s and large historic murals (East Side Gallery) and whose remixed cubist/pop art/Neue Sachlichkeit aesthetics are iconic of the Berlin art scene.

Going along the figurative trail, Marion Jdanoff (half of the duo Palefroi) develops a highly poetic and fairytale-like universe, fueled with middle age tales, strange characters, fabled animals in a rich palette of colors. Fabian Warnsing paints large-sized canvases in a faux-naïf style, creating still life paintings, urban landscapes and everyday scenes.

The graphite drawings of Lars Wunderlich are part of a series from 2017 titled „East German Realities“, whereby the artist applies his process of distortion and glitches to scenes witnessed in the Eastern parts of Germany where nationalism is still a vivid reality.

Sebas Velasco explores the remnants of the Eastern bloc in a series of oil paintings and drawings based on scenes from Yugoslavia and elsewhere, Plattenbau, old cars, graffiti, and neon hotel signs. An urban/architecture thematic which has been magnified over 20 years by EVOL with his stencils on outdoor electric boxes and on cardboard.

Going further, Hendrik Czakainski creates 3D large-scale post-architectural panels which are radical anatomical explorations of the urban body. His works are impressive, immersive, chaotic urban scenes captured from above, on a bird’s eye view perspective.

Besides figurative and architecture-inspired works, a strong line at Urban Spree has always been „post-graffiti abstraction“, i.e. using the codes, techniques, roots, flow and philosophy of graffiti, where the letter becomes an abstraction, a substance.

While Stohead is closer in some instances to the true form of the letter (calligraphy, handstyle, overwriting), he has always experimented beyond it, trying to deconstruct and dissolve the Letter in a post-graffiti approach. Theresa Volpp’s practice is more focused on the very subject of abstract art and bears only a faint distance to graffiti, although some form of automatic writing exists in her work, in a pre-graffiti way, as if abstract art is trying to reconnect with a certain flow but before the invention of graffiti..

Christian August creates multiple layers of grey colors by erasing, scratching, repainting, and finally achieving a wall texture (in the scratchy meaning of Dubuffet and Brassaï in the early 20th century), then completing his work by a stunning dash of ultramarine color, the artist’s persistent signature. Johannes Mundinger has also strong roots in wall painting and creates delicate abstract works in subdued tones, large shapes and blocs, stunning and contemplative abstract landscapes.

Oscillating between abstract and figurative art, Berlin Praha Barter shows a diversity of approaches and styles, seemingly loosely connected but united by an undercurrent practice of wall painting and shared values.

—————————————————————————————————-

Urban Spree Galerie was created in Berlin-Friedrichshain in 2012 as a 400 sqm „artist-run“ space with the objective of discovering and promoting the emerging international wave of post-graffiti painters and artists, with a strong focus on local talents.

The gallery is an essential part of Urban Spree, a 1.700 sqm independent multi-cultural complex comprising a Biergarten, a concert room, a bookshop, 5 artist studios, a screen printing studio, itself set in a 70.000 sqm postindustrial creative compound in the heart of Berlin (R.A.W.).

The gallery benefits from its large urban grassroots ecosystem and offers its invited artists an ideal space for experimentation through ambitious on-site residencies and monthly exhibitions that usually involve painting the outside walls of the compound.

It is armed with these values of generosity and openness, shared with Trafo Gallery, that we together decided to initiate a gallery exchange.

Forensics presents Automelodi & Luminance

Forensics presents Automelodi and Luminance live in Berlin

【 LIVE 】

Automelodi [Montréal]

Automelodi is Montréal based producer and
songwriter Xavier Paradis, whose 2013 full-length
Surlendemains Acides remains one of the most well
produced and memorable synth-based works of the
modern era.

On March 30, 2018 Holodeck Records is
proud to reissue this evocative collection of songs on
LP, cassette and digital download. Delivered in
French, Automelodi is the result of Paradis’ passion
for analog electronics and devotion to brooding pop
sensibilities. Surlendemains Acides has been out of
print for several years, and now to the delight of
hardware enthusiasts and fans alike, this classic is
given a second life.

Paradis is a well-established figure in Montréal’s
dense electronic music culture, and Automelodi has
become one of the most innovative projects to come
out of the region that has produced pioneers like
Marie Davidson and Tim Hecker. Paradis shows the
exquisite ability to arrange with a careful ear for
texture, forming each song element with rich
expression and character. His process of composing
with analog synthesizers and drum machines like the
Moog MG-1 and the Roland TR-808 is used in
combination with field recorded “found sound”
allowing Paradis to write with a palate that is
aesthetically wide-ranging but chosen with precision.
Paradis’ persona as a weary romantic is at the heart
of Surlendemains Acides and extends well beyond
the studio. Paradis’ charm and sleek aesthetic
translate smoothly to his live show and music videos,
with swaggering stage presence and seductive
dance moves.

Automelodi is internationally recognized in
underground electronic circles as an artist of the
highest caliber with an inspiring but rare discography.
Holodeck is honored to work with Automelodi and
add Surlendemains Acides to its catalog.

The music is a mix of new wave , synthpop , electronic with cold and cloudy vibes floating around it, inspired by cold wave, synthpop, post punk, and all kinds of music from the 80’s but definitely bathing in the present moment.
Echoing drums in the distance, vaporous winds bearing the old voices, here to guide us through the coldness of the city, towards the ancestral light.

SOLD OUT: Shortparis

Shortparis are well on their way to deserved international acclaim and already being heralded as „the best Russian live act“. Hailing from St. Petersburg and led by charismatic frontman Nikolay Komiagin, the band continues to build a reputation for its jaw-dropping ritualistic performances and dark, electronic soundscapes, as „irrational, spastic dance grooves“ converge with „post-punk, experimental noise and acoustic chanson“ to form a musical aesthetic that is one of a kind.

Performing in Russian, French and English, Shortparis are nothing short of a revelation as they aim to provide a fitting soundtrack to their everyday lives, a sound that mirrors St. Petersburg as it was and is. „You know, I constantly dream of coming across bands like Shortparis yet so rarely do,“ writes John Doran of The Quietus. „Ambitious, bombastic, incredibly pretentious, erotic, thrilling, impossible to pin down, vaguely deviant, fun to dance to and full of revolutionary potential. Sure, if you listen hard enough you can hear them laughing but you would be a fool to make the mistake of presuming that they’re joking.“

Their music videos are almost equally intense and leave room for interpretation. Take the companion visuals to „Страшно“ (Strashno / transl. „Scary“) for instance. The lyrics reflect a current state of anxiety as the visuals try to reveal a sort of ongoing hysteria. Only hours after filming at a school, someone called the police about possible terrorist activities: „Our music video is trying to manifest the state of some part of our generation. It is provocative and refers to some social tragedies, which are not reflected in our visual culture. Taboos and fears are opened up: no matter what is written in Arabic letters, ‚love‘ or ‚friendship‘, it must be terrorism, bald heads must mean nazis, and so on. But after all this play with meanings, only anxiety stays and it grows.“

@YOUNG WIDOWS (US) + HEADS. (DE)

Young Widows
Since their inception in 2006, Young Widows have released four studio albums – each pushing their restless drive towards the incomparable a little further. Those albums – Settle Down City (2006), Old Wounds (2008), In and Out of Youth and Lightness (2011), and Easy Pain (2014) – were as bruising as they were brilliant, as menacing as they were mysterious.
DECAYED: Ten Years of Cities, Wounds, Lightness, and Pain perfectly charts Young Widows evolution from inspired post-hardcore trio to peerless entity crafting profound combinations of post-punk, noise rock, heavy psych, and gothic folk.
The fifteen tracks in this collection originally appeared on stand-alone singles, b-side, splits with like-minded artists (including Bonnie Prince Billy, Pelican, Melt-Banana, and MY DISCO), and rare compilations. Four of them have never
been released until now.
Of the many impressive aspects of Young Widows decade-plus run as a band, perhaps most remarkable is the quality and breadth of music they made that didn’t appear on their albums.
Every song here is a standout track from the evolving eras of the band, and as with all things Young Widows, DECAYED pays respect to the past while planting roots for the future.
