08.05.2019 Berlin – Urban Spree

Istanbul synthpop vanguards Jakuzi turned heads in 2017 with the release of their unique and exciting debut album ‘Fantezi Müzik’ which showcased modern Turkish underground music to the world. Two years later their new album, “Hata Payı” (meaning literally ‘’a part of the mistake”), brings a more refined and darker sound to their arsenal, exploring the depths of relationships and the human condition.

When Jakuzi released their debut ‘’Fantezi Müzik“ as a cassette in 2016, no one expected that this would leave its circle in Istanbul. But the record was rereleased with new tracks in early 2017 via City Slang records and immediately became a favorite amongst critics and music fans alike. The band embraced a manifold of musical elements, layering pop fragments with slabs of Low-Fi, New Wave and Post Punk. They effortlessly created one of the most unique sounding albums of the year and gained attraction internationally.

The album is less heterogeneous than the debut but yet, the unique sounds stay intact. The first single “Süphe” (translates to “Doubt ») is the saddest track you can cry dance to since A Flock Of Seagulls “Wishing“. Then there’s “Yangın” (“Fire ») which writes synthpop history with its mad genius half-time / crescendo, or “Gördüğüm Rüya“ (« The Dream I See ») that starts with a very familiar guitar riff just to morph into an epic dreamwave anthem. “Toz” (“Dust ») recalls the lively experiments of a young Martin Gore, and it doesn’t’ stop there. “Hata Payı” is full of ideas and energy, the songs take well nuanced twists and turns and prove that even in the darkest hours, Jakuzi never shy away from glorious pop moments.

Kælan Mikla + Some Ember live

[aufnahme + wiedergabe] presents:

Kælan Mikla live
[ISL, Artoffact Records / Fabrika Rec]
www.kaelanmikla.bandcamp.com

Icelandic post-punk meets death-synth trio Kælan Mikla returns for the group’s third album, Nótt Eftir Nótt.

Topping a year that catapulted the band onto stages shared with the likes of The Cure and Placebo, Nótt Eftir Nótt is Kælan Mikla at their most confident, and their most deadly. It’s been five years since Margrét Rósa Dóru-Harrysdóttir, Laufey Soffia, and Sólveig Matthildur Kristjánsdóttir formed the band in Reykjavik, but after several tours and high-profiles stages, as well as two critically-acclaimed albums, Kælan Mikla has brought their A-game in a big way.

Starting off quietly with a creepy, gothed-out ethereal intro, Nótt Eftir Nótt erupts with post-punk brilliance and synthlines that harken back to the bad old days of the Batcave, big hair, and Egyptian-inspired eye-liner. Tracks like the melancholy “Hvernig kemst ég upp?” are wonderfully delightful, while the band goes for the big goth dance number on “Skuggadans,” succeeding with glorious ease. Near the end of Nótt Eftir Nótt, when you’ve already ingested a healthy dose of Diamanda Galas meets The Birthday Party, the title track, produced by popular Icelandic electronic wizard Bang Gang, is basically perfect.

Hot on the heels of shows at Roadburn, Meltdown, and The Cure’s 40th Anniversary, as well as a Fall tour supporting King Dude, Kælan Mikla are set to take their place as one of darkest aural poets on the world stage.

Some Ember live
[US, Third Coming Records]
www.someember.bandcamp.com

SUBMERGING THE SUN, the second LP by Some Ember, is a journal of climatological grief, intimate vulnerability, and transcendental sadness. Self-produced by songwriter Dylan Travis, the record’s sparse arrangements are weighted by bleak ambience and dramatic vocal turns. Icy synthesizers pierce veils of fog-like drones, delivering sorrow and catharsis. Tides of dissonance ebb to reveal glittering mirages of hope, which are just as soon swept away.

Long a fixture of the Oakland, CA musical underground, Some Ember has seen many forms – a solo dream pop bedroom project, a four-piece goth rock outfit, then a hardware-based synth duo, and now a solo performance project once more. Following cassettes on Crash Symbols, Night-People and Ascetic House, the band released their first LP on Dream in 2014. In 2015, Travis and longtime collaborator Nina Chase made the move to Berlin. After a tumultuous two years (which saw a further cassette released on Dream, “DEBTS OF LOVE”), the band will release SUBMERGING THE SUN, as well as a companion cassette EP, SUBMERGED, on Third Coming Records in November 2018.

MAIORANO Release PARTY.

Maiorano Release Party « Glorious Days »

Bridging the gap between such disparate genres as R&B, Soul, Garage, Punk, Funk and Rock & Roll may seem like a tall order on paper – but as audiences across Europe will attest, MAIORANO do it with gusto.
Frontman Alex performs with wild abandon, passion, and intensity while the remaining 7-strong ensemble of musicians delivers tight rhythms, soulful grooves and soaring brass backing.

With the band’s constantly evolving sound being so difficult to define, and the band’s name somewhat tricky to pronounce (it’s « My-Oh-Ra-No », if you were wondering), it’s a welcome relief that the music is so instant and easy to fall in love with.

With their new LP, “Glorious Days,” (recorded in Rome with ‘Giuda’ producer Danilo Silvestri) poised for release later this year, MAIORANO will be bringing their powerhouse live show to ever more enthusiastic audiences while continuing to defy expectation and categorisation.

DEAFKIDS
Neurot Recordings – Brasil

DEAFKIDS’ « Configuração Do Lamento » is an untamed release, happy to juxtapose monolithic drone riffage with frantic polyrhythmic detours, the band citing the syncopated beats of African drums as a major influence. It is a guttural, scorched mutation of psychedelia, that similar intent of frying the listener’s perception, while void of anything approaching earthy wistfulness, wholly fluid in nature, paying no heed to any musical expectations other than the creators own internal logic. A bombardment of clanging percussion sits below relentless guitar battering, and a whole host of electronic tamperings, effects which in practice manage to further confound the proceedings. Using the term psychedelic in the absolute loosest sense is apt, as the band claims that “non-genre genres” are a chief source of inspiration, referencing anything from their own background in punk, right the way through to spiritual jazz, practically any form which allows the artist to experiment with the utter extremes of musical expression.

Brazil’s DEAFKIDS are one of those bands buoyed by a mystic kind of momentum, a ceaselessness whose source lies in some vital, but unknown spring. Their music is a glorious cacophony, a mixture of pummelling Gnod-esque cataclysms and the traditional sounds of their native Brazil and Latin America; it’s a brutal blend of hardcore punk, metal, experimental noise, and a pumping rhythmic vein with its roots in African and Indian polyrhythm. – THE QUIETUS

The act of venturing away from genre restrictions is by no means guaranteed to bring out the best in a hardcore band, but when it comes off it can be exhilarating. The second album by Brazilian trio DEAFKIDS is a fine example of expanded horizons done right. – WIRE

CUNTROACHES
Instrument Of Disciplines / Teratology Sound & Visions – Berlin
Most exciting band from Berlin in a long time! Noisy, blown-to-pieces, nasty hardcore with an eerie resemblance to lo-fi death metal monstrosities such as Necrovore or Nuclear Death, without actually embracing metal as a musical form. It’s just the sheer evil and chaos surging from the speakers and literally forcing your face in a pool of rubbish and blood. With only two tapes out and a 7“ coming up next, this merry bunch will torment your existence for a long time still.
