Berlin- Praha Barter

After the first exhibition, titled « Praha Berlin Barter » (March/April 2019) which was hosted by Urban Spree in Berlin, the gallery is this time being hosted by Trafo Gallery in Prague in a new group exhibition called « Berlin Praha Barter« .

In this second round, we have invited 11 visual artists of the Urban Spree family to exhibit artworks at Trafo Gallery:

 The artists are representative of the new Berlin scene that emerged since the Fall of the Wall, starting with the precursor – Jim Avignon – quite known for his painted decors of many of the Berlin squatted clubs of the early 90’s and large historic murals (East Side Gallery) and whose remixed cubist/pop art/Neue Sachlichkeit aesthetics are iconic of the Berlin art scene.

 

Going along the figurative trail, Marion Jdanoff (half of the duo Palefroi) develops a highly poetic and fairytale-like universe, fueled with middle age tales, strange characters, fabled animals in a rich palette of colors. Fabian Warnsing paints large-sized canvases in a faux-naïf style, creating still life paintings, urban landscapes and everyday scenes.

The graphite drawings of Lars Wunderlich are part of a series from 2017 titled « East German Realities », whereby the artist applies his process of distortion and glitches to scenes witnessed in the Eastern parts of Germany where nationalism is still a vivid reality.

Sebas Velasco explores the remnants of the Eastern bloc in a series of oil paintings and drawings based on scenes from Yugoslavia and elsewhere, Plattenbau, old cars, graffiti, and neon hotel signs. An urban/architecture thematic which has been magnified over 20 years by EVOL with his stencils on outdoor electric boxes and on cardboard.

Going further, Hendrik Czakainski creates 3D large-scale post-architectural panels which are radical anatomical explorations of the urban body. His works are impressive, immersive, chaotic urban scenes captured from above, on a bird’s eye view perspective.

Besides figurative and architecture-inspired works, a strong line at Urban Spree has always been « post-graffiti abstraction », i.e. using the codes, techniques, roots, flow and philosophy of graffiti, where the letter becomes an abstraction, a substance.

While Stohead is closer in some instances to the true form of the letter (calligraphy, handstyle, overwriting), he has always experimented beyond it, trying to deconstruct and dissolve the Letter in a post-graffiti approach. Theresa Volpp‘s practice is more focused on the very subject of abstract art and bears only a faint distance to graffiti, although some form of automatic writing exists in her work, in a pre-graffiti way, as if abstract art is trying to reconnect with a certain flow but before the invention of graffiti..

Christian August creates multiple layers of grey colors by erasing, scratching, repainting, and finally achieving a wall texture (in the scratchy meaning of Dubuffet and Brassaï in the early 20th century), then completing his work by a stunning dash of ultramarine color, the artist’s persistent signature. Johannes Mundinger has also strong roots in wall painting and creates delicate abstract works in subdued tones, large shapes and blocs, stunning and contemplative abstract landscapes.

Oscillating between abstract and figurative art, Berlin Praha Barter shows a diversity of approaches and styles, seemingly loosely connected but united by an undercurrent practice of wall painting and shared values.

Urban Spree Galerie was created in Berlin-Friedrichshain in 2012 as a 400 sqm « artist-run » space with the objective of discovering and promoting the emerging international wave of post-graffiti painters and artists, with a strong focus on local talents.

The gallery is an essential part of Urban Spree, a 1.700 sqm independent multi-cultural complex comprising a Biergarten, a concert room, a bookshop, 5 artist studios, a screen printing studio, itself set in a 70.000 sqm postindustrial creative compound in the heart of Berlin (R.A.W.).

The gallery benefits from its large urban grassroots ecosystem and offers its invited artists an ideal space for experimentation through ambitious on-site residencies and monthly exhibitions that usually involve painting the outside walls of the compound.

It is armed with these values of generosity and openness, shared with Trafo Gallery, that we together decided to initiate a gallery exchange.

RAWS: #Neograffism

Urban Spree Galerie presents « #Neograffism« , the first solo show of the Berlin-based post-graffiti artist Kai « RAWS » Imhof with Urban Spree.

In « #Neograffism », a term coined by the artist as being representative of his studio philosophy, RAWS strips down his years of graffiti practice and complexity build-up to lay bare the basic essence of graffiti through color and shape in a visually stunning arrangement of colors, contrasts, and gradients.

RAWS explores the tipping point where the core aesthetics of graffiti, after being deconstructed and re-arranged, becomes acceptable as a form of art while retaining its purity. The artist uses a mixed technique in his studio works, using both the spray can and the acrylic brush, as a hybridation of both worlds, the studio and the outdoor.

« When it comes to design, I try to combine my preferences for letters, graphics and minimalism in my work. Many of the works were done using acrylic paints and spray cans. The use of these media also emphasizes the duality of graphics and graffiti. In my canvases I have mostly worked with gradients. These are created exclusively with aerosol and can be a symbol of the movement and transience of graffiti. »

In his « Black Series », writing his name becomes a subdued background while the colorful gradients are windows to his artistic world.

 

 

Biography:

Kai “RAWS” Imhof (b. 1990 in in Königs Wusterhausen) is a Berlin-based German graffiti artist and graphic designer.

 

RAWS started painting graffiti in his neighborhood in his early teens, extensively bombing the city from 2004 to 2008, where issues with law enforcement led to the start of his studio career. Trained as a graphic designer at the Best-Sabel Designschule in Berlin, RAWS is also an accomplished designer, having designed products for Reebok, Marvel, Nike, the fashion designer MarcCain, MontanaCans, Über-Skateboards etc.

In parallel, RAWS paints murals all over the world and participates to group shows since 2017 ( The Haus in Berlin, Monumenta in Leipzig, or Wandelism in Berlin). #Neograffism is his first solo show.

Futura: The 5 Elements

Urban Spree Galerie and Art-Together present: « Futura: The 5 Elements », a solo exhibition of new works by Lenny McGurr, a.k.a. Futura 2000.

The Opening Reception will be in Berlin on Friday January 11th, 2019, in presence of the artist.

The exhibition is one of the largest solo exhibitions of Futura to date with more than 60 original paintings on display.

« The 5 Elements » is not a retrospective show. On the contrary, Futura worked specifically on a large museum-style conceptual exhibition, tackling the ambitious theme of the Creation of the Universe, confronting himself to the cosmos, the planets, the infinitely small, the Big Bang and the fundamental elements, producing a corpus of works that becomes a personal path to the exploration of the universe and of course of Futura’s internal galaxy.

The works are displayed starting by the Big Bang, going through the birth of the solar system and to our perception of the 4 elements.

The works have been produced in early 2018 in Lille, France, during a  residency organized by Art-Together, a newly launched ambitious platform for the development of urban contemporary arts.

A set of 4 exclusive silk screen prints are being released on the Opening Night. The set is based on the painting series « Pure ». Each 8-color screen print is hand-pulled by Dolly Demoratti (Mother Drucker/Urban Spree Studio), signed and numbered by Futura. The 50 x 50 cm prints are only sold as a limited edition of 100 sets.

A 128-page companion book titled « Futura, les 5 éléments », will also be released in Berlin on the Opening Night and will be signed by the artist. More than an exhibition catalogue, the book intends to share the creative path of the residency and provides scientific explanation to the series of paintings.

 

About the artist:

Futura is an American visual artist, born Lenny McGurr in NYC in 1955. He is recognized as one of the first modern-era graffiti writers, and the pioneer of the abstract graffiti genre. Passionate about science fiction, he chose his moniker « Futura 2000 » when he started graffiti at 15 in reference to Stanley Kubrick’s movie « 2001 – A Space Odyssey ».

He started painting the NYC subways in the early 1970s and was the first writer to paint a whole car in the abstract graffiti style which became his signature. He was part of the famed exhibition « New York/New Wave » in 1981 at the P.S.1 (Institute for Art and Urban Resources, Inc.) together with Basquiat (a.k.a. SAMO), Haring, Crash, Quick, Dondi and Kenny Scharf. He had numerous solo and group exhibitions and is also actively involved in street wear and fashion.

Total Black is a record label presently based in Berlin releasing noise, industrial, power electronics, and experimental music that is frequently organizing events with disparate but complimentary sounds, showcasing artists and associates of the label from across the world. Technologie und das Unheimliche (T+U) is a Berlin-Budapest-Elsewhere based publishing project and cross-disciplinary movement. T+U mediates between cultural technologies within the context of post-digitality and tries to contaminate para-academic thinking with artistic tactics.

The concert & film screening series Easterndaze × Berlin: DIY Music Topographies brings together music collectives from Eastern Europe and pairs each of them with groups from Berlin’s diverse DIY scenes in the name of collective spirit and communal effort. Collectives featured include Intruder Alert (Warsaw), Muscut (Kiev), Exiles & T+U (Budapest), Care of Editions (Berlin), Room 4 Resistance (Berlin), Total Black (Berlin), as well as an A/V Performance by Christoph De Babalon (Berlin) and WIDT (Warsaw). The music events occur November 28-Dec 1 (various locations) and the accompanying film program will be presented at Soundwatch Berlin Music Film Festival Nov 7-16 at Lichtblick-Kino.

Roman Klonek: Cut the Crap

Urban Spree Galerie presents « Cut the Crap« , a new series of woodcut printings by Düsseldorf-based visual artist Roman Klonek that will be exhibited in our Galerie Ecke.

The Opening Cererony will take place on Friday, September 7th, from 19:00 and occurs during Berlin’s Urban Art Week (05-12 September 2018).

In der aktuellen Ausstellung “Cut the crap” können sie beobachten wir die traditionelle Handwerkskunst der Holzschnitzerei auf experimentelle Formen der Erzählung trifft.

Die Erzählungen sind frei von kategorischen Vorgaben, weder zeitlich noch räumlich eindeutig.

Vergleichbar vielleicht am ehesten mit einem mehrschichtigen Skizzenbuch, wobei man sich hier bitte einemmal vorstellen mag das Papier wäre durchsichtig und alles “Gezeichnete » ein heilloses Kauderwelsch und Durcheinander.

Vielleicht sollte ich nun erwähnen, dass ich es liebe es ein Chaos anzurichten um es anschließend wieder aufzuräumen.
Kommt es dabei zu einem unverhofften Zusammentreffen zweier oder mehrerer Ideen (wobei dies oft auf geradezu natürliche Weise stattfindet), kann es gut passieren das diese Begegnungen aufgrund ihrer Originalität einen Glücksmoment in mir hervorrufen.

Was die Kombination der Ideen, bzw Bildelemente angeht, bewege mich da auch gern in der Tradition der sogenannten B-Movies, die dadurch, das sie ein Gegenentwurf zum berechenbaren Mainstream Kino sind, mit deutlich mehr Risikobereitschaft und ohne Rücksicht auf konzeptionelle Strenge, oft die wichtigsten Merkmale beim Erzählen von Geschichten vorweisen – nämlich die Momente der Überraschung.

Roman Klonek, born in Kattowitz/Poland and now based in Dûsseldorf, has a spot for old fashioned cartoons and modern block printing styles. In the 1990s he studied Graphic Arts in Düsseldorf and discovered a passion for woodcut. Since 15 years now, he is doing posters with a wide range of whimsical creatures, mostly half animal/half human, preferential in awkward situations, a bizarre balancing act between propaganda, folklore and pop.

Force Field 2-Night Event w Gigsta & Aquarian

This time for the course of a full weekend, Force Field is insanely excited to present Gigsta and Aquarian, both masters of their own distinct sounds.

Host of Cashmere Radio’s Frictions show Gigsta + recent Bedouin Records’ signee Aquarian, will be presenting two very different interpretations of bass-heavy sounds, from skeletal riddims to juicy bangers and beyond.
Our one-off weekend will also be presenting several debuting projects: Two first-ever duo sets by Aquarian b2b RO Zar + a first Force Field resident b2b between RO Zar and Misantrop (latter of who will also be playing a solo set). Finally we’re excited to present Wesley, geriatric-digger yet tenderfoot-DJ, Force Field confidant Jonathan Clark.

GIGSTA (03.08)
A regular host on Cashmere Radio with her show Fictions, Gigsta has been working across many fields of musical theory and practice over the last decade. She is currently writing a PhD on Techno Criticism and spends all of her time away from the library, dancing, playing and digging for sounds. Her sets bring together a variety of genres and she explores different tempos, rhythms, colors and sounds with a specific fascination for lower frequencies.

AQUARIAN (04.08)
Aquarian makes raw, arresting and immediate music aimed squarely at the dance floor. His sound draws from both sides of the Atlantic, combining Drexcyian electro, old school jungle and UK grime with vertical singularity. The Canadian born, Brooklyn/Berlin based artist broke out with a trio of records for UNO NYC, with his 2014 self titled EP cementing him as an artist to watch while landing him a mix on Resident Advisor’s coveted podcast series. Since then he has released records through his own culinary-rave imprint, Hanger Management (described by RA as “Aquarian at his best: searing club melodrama, built from whip-crack breaks, ground-splitting bass and acrid techno adornments), also releasing a lauded experimental cassette for Quiet Time Tapes, a standout track on Allergy Season x Discwoman’s Physically Sick compilation and mixing for Rob Booth’s Seminal Electronic Explorations series.
2018 saw his debut collaborative EP with Deapmash (Leisure System) as AQXDM on UAE’s Bedouin Records with early support from the likes of Ben UFO, Objekt, Avalon Emerson, Dax J, and Emmanuel and championed by the likes of Pitchfork, Mixmag and Resident Advisor. The former wrote: “…scrupulously de-signed, hi-def…crisp and propulsive, “Aegis” is more than a slice of dark and unforgiving techno; it’s some sorely needed dancefloor euphoria.”

FORCE FIELD
Force Field is an event venture gathering the sonic perspectives of selectors RO Zar and Misantrop.
Anything goes—it’s a vibrant melting pot of divergent sounds and disparate tempos, orbiting around bass diasporas, off-kilter riddims, the hardcore continuum, a spectrum of euphoria, modern angularity, oddball gems, and further filth. Cheeky fun for the dancers who like to be kept on their toes.
