Futura: The 5 Elements

Urban Spree Galerie and Art-Together present: „Futura: The 5 Elements“, a solo exhibition of new works by Lenny McGurr, a.k.a. Futura 2000.

The Opening Reception will be in Berlin on Friday January 11th, 2019, in presence of the artist.

The exhibition is one of the largest solo exhibitions of Futura to date with more than 60 original paintings on display.

„The 5 Elements“ is not a retrospective show. On the contrary, Futura worked specifically on a large museum-style conceptual exhibition, tackling the ambitious theme of the Creation of the Universe, confronting himself to the cosmos, the planets, the infinitely small, the Big Bang and the fundamental elements, producing a corpus of works that becomes a personal path to the exploration of the universe and of course of Futura’s internal galaxy.

The works are displayed starting by the Big Bang, going through the birth of the solar system and to our perception of the 4 elements.

The works have been produced in early 2018 in Lille, France, during a  residency organized by Art-Together, a newly launched ambitious platform for the development of urban contemporary arts.

A set of 4 exclusive silk screen prints are being released on the Opening Night. The set is based on the painting series „Pure“. Each 8-color screen print is hand-pulled by Dolly Demoratti (Mother Drucker/Urban Spree Studio), signed and numbered by Futura. The 50 x 50 cm prints are only sold as a limited edition of 100 sets.

A 128-page companion book titled „Futura, les 5 éléments“, will also be released in Berlin on the Opening Night and will be signed by the artist. More than an exhibition catalogue, the book intends to share the creative path of the residency and provides scientific explanation to the series of paintings.

About the artist:

Futura is an American visual artist, born Lenny McGurr in NYC in 1955. He is recognized as one of the first modern-era graffiti writers, and the pioneer of the abstract graffiti genre. Passionate about science fiction, he chose his moniker „Futura 2000“ when he started graffiti at 15 in reference to Stanley Kubrick’s movie „2001 – A Space Odyssey“.

He started painting the NYC subways in the early 1970s and was the first writer to paint a whole car in the abstract graffiti style which became his signature. He was part of the famed exhibition „New York/New Wave“ in 1981 at the P.S.1 (Institute for Art and Urban Resources, Inc.) together with Basquiat (a.k.a. SAMO), Haring, Crash, Quick, Dondi and Kenny Scharf. He had numerous solo and group exhibitions and is also actively involved in street wear and fashion.

Anthony Lister: Sneaky Bit In

Urban Spree Galerie presents „Sneaky Bit In„, a solo show by the Australian visual & street artist Anthony Lister. The Opening of the show will be on Friday, September 14th, 2018 in the presence of the artist.

Invited by Urban Spree as part of our Artist-in-Residence program, Lister spent 3 weeks at Urban Spree between August and September 2018 to create in situ a whole new body of large scale works, installations, media art, and a large mural.

For this residency project, Lister incorporated a large palette of references stemming from cubism, Picasso’s „Les Demoiselles d’Avignon“ and „Guernica„, Alejandro Jodorowski’s „The Holy Montain„, African masks, religion, divination and tarot, Aboriginal trans women, and direct references to Damien Hirst.

Lister’s outdoor mural at Urban Spree is a variation and alternate narrative on the theme of the main painting of the exhibition, in a style reminiscent of Egon Schiele and incorporating elements of Picasso’s Guernica. The wall was executed with a 6m long extension pole, and signed with a paint-filled fire extinguisher.

Anthony Lister (b. 1979 in Brisbane) is a contemporary Australian-born painter and installation artist, best known for his merging of “high” and “low” cultural imagery. Particularly well known as a street artist, Lister is considered amongst the best in the field with graffiti art legend Banksy even commenting that Lister appears to piss great art in his sleep.

He studied at the Griffith Queensland College of Art and was further educated under mentor Max Gimblett in New York City. Lister helped pioneer the street art movement in his home city as a teenager and is considered Australia’s premier street artist.

Lister employs multiple media including charcoal, acrylic, spray paint, oil pastels to create his scrawling, figurative style.

Lister has exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Lazarides Gallery in London, Underdogs Gallery in Lisbon, New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles, Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York, Olsen Gallery in Sydney, Black Art Projects in Melbourne, Fireworks Gallery in Brisbane, and Allouche Gallery in New York City.

Lister currently lives and works between Sydney and New York City.

Lick&Listen#10 . Adult Films with Live Music

Urban Spree and Fecunda Lab join forces to organice, Lick&Listen: Adult Films with Live Music + Party

Lick&Listen selects silent ethical-adult films.

The silent film era lasted from 1894 to 1929. During the silent film era a pianist, theater organist, or, in large cities, even a small orchestra would often play music to accompany the films.

Fecunda Lab offers the contemporary version of it.

The aim of Lick&Listen is to normalize porn through contemporary screenings of silent alternative erotic films (Queer, Fun, Feminist, Gay, Kinki, or Fetish among others) in public spaces. During silent ethical adult films, musicians will either play improvise or sheet music to accompany the films.

We will enjoy three concerts and after the screen-concert, we said goodbye to the night dancing in a nice and sexy atmosphere.

Get tickets in advance to ensure your entrance: 6.5€
Spare tickets at the door: 8€ / From 22.30: 5€

Nocturnal Emissions + Simon Crab

Mannequin (Label + Mailorder), [aufnahme + wiedergabe] and Post-Punk.com present:

Nocturnal Emissions (UK) live

www.nocturnalemissions.bandcamp.com

Nocturnal Emissions has been one of the best kept secrets of the industrial genre since the 1970s. Led by Nigel Ayers, the band was one of the first to use tape cutting, avant-garde art, and underground video works to create a stage experience that was being cultivated by like-minded artists like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. The band moved on to using samplers and electronic noise in their early ’80s work, creating a twisted funk sound that would go on to influence everyone from Foetus to Negativland. They still utilized their former tricks, upping the ante with extremist performance art and more professional video displays. The group avoided signing to a major label, instead focusing on releasing their own music more effectively. They followed this path into the ’90s when they started www.earthlydelights.co.uk, an incredibly detailed website that promotes their various ideologies (they are strongly against the British monarchy and believe that citizens should have unlimited access to space travel) and constant release schedule. The band has released countless tapes and CDs of their material, and continues to unleash their noise through their website. Mannequin hast just released a compilation focusing on Nocturnal Emissions‘ work between 1980 and 1989

Crab also learned traditional African and Middle Eastern music and is a member of London’s Gamelan orchestra.

ANTIME

Bad Stream live A/V
Hainbach live modular
Tony Renaissance live
Hyperaktivist dj-set
Daniel Craig live
konkrit dj-set

Sure, it would have been almost quiet around the ANTIME crew if we hadn’t had the pleasure of releasing a stunning remix bundle for Soft Grid’s 2016 LP »Corolla« late this summer. But that doesn’t mean we’ve been idle in the face of turmoil. On October 28th, ANTIME will return to Berlin’s most beloved musical hub, Urban Spree, for a label showcase that doubles as release party for the brand new digital ANTIME compilation released on the same day.

Label founder Martin Steer has been busy this year perfecting his Bad Stream audio-visual live show and will present the newest results along some old and new faces. The recent Opal Tapes alumnus Hainbach has been performing and collaborating with people from the ANTIME crew for quite a while now and we’re happy to have him back for one of his modular synth sets, just before he sets out for an exciting future with us. Daniel Craig hasn’t been living in Berlin for long, but has rapidly become a very active figure in the city’s experimental underground scene and will bring some of his oneiric trademark sounds this evening. The line-up will be completed by two exciting artists who are completely new to the ANTIME universe. Tony Renaissance from Vienna blends a knack for elegiac pop ballads with a passion for sweaty, contemporary club music into an eerily fascinating whole. The Venezuelan DJ and producer Hyperaktivist, host of the regular Mess nights at Berlin’s Ohm will bring some Industrial and EBM-inspired off-kilter Techno to the party.

Holzmund #5

Handmade sounds, experimental performance, repetitive rhythms: „Holzmund“ refers to concerts with live processing and analogue gear, as much as to the physical experience of a club night with electronic dance music.

Doron Sadja is an artist, composer, and curator whose work explores the perception of sound and light in a spatial framework. His concerts often combine multichannel electronic sounds with stroboscopic smoke, mirror, laser, and projection shows. Besides touring the US and Europe, Sadja co-founded Shinkoyo Records and the West Nile performing arts venue in Brooklyn, has curated various festivals around NYC, and a series of listening sessions at Spectrum, Berlin. For Holzmund #5 he will play a site specific performance with installations.

Marco Donnarumma has a distinct standing in the fields of contemporary performance and media art, making use of emerging technologies like biophysical sensing to deliver artworks that are at once intimate, powerful, and confrontational. He just played at Ars Electronica Festival 2017, and is a new member of the Techno-act Dadub. For Holzmund #5 he will perform his pieces Ominous and Music for Flesh II.

Anna Bolena has a strong presence in the Berlin Techno scene for so many years now: as a DJ and producer, but also running her own label Idroscalo Dischi, and successfully promoting the Buttons-parties at ://about blank. For Holzmund #5 she will spin 3 turntables, and play her own Techno productions from dub plates: exclusive, ‚one-off‘ acetate disc recordings. This tradition goes back to the first days of techno and DJ culture: Faced with limited access to DJ friendly records, DJs turned to dub plates to be able to play their own productions in the clubs. Expect grave, industrial Techno.

Dim_Light is not only a collector of grim visual aesthetics (http://wherenext.tumblr.com/), and one half of Nemorous Records, but also running his own label Voidance Records, just lately bringing out a stunning first release. At Holzmund #5 you have the chance to enjoy one of his rare DJ sets: fierce, dark and droning, building up to compelling Techno beats.

Longtime Holzmund-resident and promoter Beb.Welten will set the tone with a warm to noisy ambient opening set. The night closes with focus on the dancefloor, mixed by eftechr, the other half of the Holzmund-crew, and Techno producer for Aconito Records, London.
