Hendrik Czakainski: Nonpoint Sources

« Imagine that you are a raindrop. It begins to rain and you hit the ground and flow across streets, parking lots, yards, construction sites, farm fields… Along the way, you pick up litter, oil, grease, metals, rubber, dirt, fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste, and other things left behind. All of these pollutants mix with the rain and flow away as nonpoint source pollution. » (Illinois Environmental Protection Agency).

In Hendrik Czakainski’s previous exhibition at Urban Spree Galerie, « Switch Over » (2018), the famed « invisible hand » of Adam Smith finally achieved its predictable self-strangulation and hinted towards the obliteration of the age of Anthropocene. His powerful works laid bare the rusted skeletons of what was once qualified as habitat. A post-architectural world – and beyond -, in which life subsided on the fringes, a derelict, abstract  and borderless Universum, morbidly fascinating.

For « Nonpoint Sources« , his 4th solo show at Urban Spree, Hendrik Czakainski fills his large wall sculptures with the particles and raindrops of our contaminated civilization, building his imaginary constructions only to let them succumb to the invisible and poisonous streams that run through it. Huge fracture lines dislocate high density environments, Earth is scorched beyond repair, structures are flooded with colored poisons that irrigate the veins of our industrial civilization.

We do not only see the structures, we see the flooding and the elements, we see how the artist skillfully paints and distorts the structures he so patiently erected.

Call For Rain invites Berlin to gather and dance for the relief of those affected by the bushfires in Australia.
We are currently witnessing the most horrific & catastrophic bushfires to plague the planet.
Thousands of homes have been destroyed or damaged, over 10 million hectares of land have been ravaged, and over 1 billion animals have been estimated to have been killed as a result. Thousands are displaced. Our death toll continues to rise.
This isn’t a national crisis. It’s a global crisis.

For centuries, cultures have practiced rituals in order to Call For Rain, and now we invite you to join us on this evening to come together and dance, and to take part in a collective effort to raise funds for those at the forefront of fighting the fires that continue to burn Australia.

We would like to mention our sister-event that takes place in Tel Aviv, on 01.02.2020 at Sputnik bar. Stay tuned for more details regarding this. We stand for the same cause.

100% of proceeds from this event will be distributed to the following charities;
CFA: Country Fire Association Victoria. (A volunteer & community based fire & emergency services organisation).
Wildlife Victoria. (A wildlife rescue and sheltering association committed to rescuing, rehabilitating & providing equipment for the rescue of wildlife during the bushfires).

We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land; past, present and future. We recognise their connection to land, water & culture.
We would like to pay our respects to their Elders past, present, & emerging, as well as all those affected by the catastrophic bushfires.

(Japan)

Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso Underground Freak Out (and subsequent offshoots) is a Japanese psychedelic space rock band, the core of which formed in 1995. The band is led by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and early in their career featured many musicians, but by 2004 the line-up had coalesced with only a few core members and frequent guest musicians.
The band has released albums frequently on a number of international record labels as well as the Acid Mothers Temple family record label, which was established in 1998 to document the activities of the whole collective.
“In a non-stop stream of thrilling noise, they segue from supercharged stomp-rock, through doomy choral chanting and frazzled go-go, to a thundering melee of atonal freakouts. Then on to a pulsating, echo-drenched disco-rock groove, which morphs into a motorik rhythm too rapid even for the autobahn, works itself into a squalling frenzy, breaks cover as a kind of galloping, syncopated, Underworld-with-rabies affair, and flows into a long, chiming trance number climaxing in a collective instrumental howl.” – David Bennun

⊙ SUNN TRIO ⊙
(Phoenix – Arizona)
https://sunntrio.bandcamp.com
https://www.facebook.com/sunntrio
Described as deep spirited, Arabic-music-tinged free jazz-punk and harsh exotica, Sunn Trio’s ever-evolving ensemble digests a number of genres, spitting them back out in creative destruction. Carrying on a long tradition of sun-beaten Phoenix punk, Sunn Trio evokes the sweltering and hallucinatory Arizona desert. Echoes of Sonny Sharrock, John McLaughlin, and Sir Richard Bishop can be heard in Joel Robinson’s fiery blurs of guitar. Imagine the Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 in full force, echoing from behind a curtain of bitter haze. Founded by Robinson in 2010, the ever-changing band has been constantly recording and releasing material, with a recent LP, Fayrus, on Germany’s Unrock Records.
“Wielding Indo-Arabian saz and white lightning six-string shrapnel amidst an alligator snapping turtle’s rhythm section, this trio-quartet-sextet may also sprout horns, flutes, animal skins, or shadow gamelan to faithfully demolish that whiny and predictable listening experience of today’s tepidly lazy, underachieving experimental music scene. Not a ‘safe’ environment.” – Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls
« There’s a woozy, heatstroke feel to the band’s innovative blend of surf rock, free jazz, mystical drone, and world music. Consistently recording and releasing material via self-distributed cassettes, the Trio’s sound mutates in concert, with fantastic flurries of distorted guitars butting up against mantric psychedelic saxophone runs and looping bass. » – Jason Patrick Woodbury

⊙ STEREOCILIA ⊙

Pixx

Pixx
+ Support: February Montaine
18.06. Berlin, Urban Spree
Einlass: 20 Uhr | Beginn: 21 Uhr

Berlin- Praha Barter

After the first exhibition, titled « Praha Berlin Barter » (March/April 2019) which was hosted by Urban Spree in Berlin, the gallery is this time being hosted by Trafo Gallery in Prague in a new group exhibition called « Berlin Praha Barter« .

Berlin Praha Barter

Preview: 16.05.2019
Exhibition: 17.05. – 23.06.2019

Curated by Pascal Feucher (Urban Spree)

In this second round, we have invited 11 visual artists of the Urban Spree family to exhibit artworks at Trafo Gallery:

The artists are representative of the new Berlin scene that emerged since the Fall of the Wall, starting with the precursor – Jim Avignon – quite known for his painted decors of many of the Berlin squatted clubs of the early 90’s and large historic murals (East Side Gallery) and whose remixed cubist/pop art/Neue Sachlichkeit aesthetics are iconic of the Berlin art scene.

Going along the figurative trail, Marion Jdanoff (half of the duo Palefroi) develops a highly poetic and fairytale-like universe, fueled with middle age tales, strange characters, fabled animals in a rich palette of colors. Fabian Warnsing paints large-sized canvases in a faux-naïf style, creating still life paintings, urban landscapes and everyday scenes.

The graphite drawings of Lars Wunderlich are part of a series from 2017 titled « East German Realities », whereby the artist applies his process of distortion and glitches to scenes witnessed in the Eastern parts of Germany where nationalism is still a vivid reality.

Sebas Velasco explores the remnants of the Eastern bloc in a series of oil paintings and drawings based on scenes from Yugoslavia and elsewhere, Plattenbau, old cars, graffiti, and neon hotel signs. An urban/architecture thematic which has been magnified over 20 years by EVOL with his stencils on outdoor electric boxes and on cardboard.

Going further, Hendrik Czakainski creates 3D large-scale post-architectural panels which are radical anatomical explorations of the urban body. His works are impressive, immersive, chaotic urban scenes captured from above, on a bird’s eye view perspective.

Besides figurative and architecture-inspired works, a strong line at Urban Spree has always been « post-graffiti abstraction », i.e. using the codes, techniques, roots, flow and philosophy of graffiti, where the letter becomes an abstraction, a substance.

While Stohead is closer in some instances to the true form of the letter (calligraphy, handstyle, overwriting), he has always experimented beyond it, trying to deconstruct and dissolve the Letter in a post-graffiti approach. Theresa Volpp‘s practice is more focused on the very subject of abstract art and bears only a faint distance to graffiti, although some form of automatic writing exists in her work, in a pre-graffiti way, as if abstract art is trying to reconnect with a certain flow but before the invention of graffiti..

Christian August creates multiple layers of grey colors by erasing, scratching, repainting, and finally achieving a wall texture (in the scratchy meaning of Dubuffet and Brassaï in the early 20th century), then completing his work by a stunning dash of ultramarine color, the artist’s persistent signature. Johannes Mundinger has also strong roots in wall painting and creates delicate abstract works in subdued tones, large shapes and blocs, stunning and contemplative abstract landscapes.

Oscillating between abstract and figurative art, Berlin Praha Barter shows a diversity of approaches and styles, seemingly loosely connected but united by an undercurrent practice of wall painting and shared values.

—————————————————————————————————-

Urban Spree Galerie was created in Berlin-Friedrichshain in 2012 as a 400 sqm « artist-run » space with the objective of discovering and promoting the emerging international wave of post-graffiti painters and artists, with a strong focus on local talents.

The gallery is an essential part of Urban Spree, a 1.700 sqm independent multi-cultural complex comprising a Biergarten, a concert room, a bookshop, 5 artist studios, a screen printing studio, itself set in a 70.000 sqm postindustrial creative compound in the heart of Berlin (R.A.W.).

The gallery benefits from its large urban grassroots ecosystem and offers its invited artists an ideal space for experimentation through ambitious on-site residencies and monthly exhibitions that usually involve painting the outside walls of the compound.

It is armed with these values of generosity and openness, shared with Trafo Gallery, that we together decided to initiate a gallery exchange.
