Praha-Berlin Barter

In March/April 2019, Urban Spree Galerie invites Prague-based Trafo Gallery for a group show and gallery exchange.

„Praha-Berlin Barter“ will take place from 28.03.2019 to 21.04.2019 and will display the works of 8 prominent Czech artists from the Trafo gallery.

Curated by Trafo Gallery Director Blanka Čermáková, the group show oscillates between contemporary urban arts (Jan Kaláb, Michal Škapa), pop surrealism (Jan Vytiska), contemporary drawing, sculpture, digital art, animation (Jakub Janovský, Michal Cimala, Jakub Nepraš), and geometric abstraction paintings (Robert Šalanda, Ira Svobodová). All artists have been involved in the old Trafacka space in Prague before its destruction and are actively involved into the new Trafo Gallery.

This group exhibition marks the first exchange between 2 independent European galleries sharing the same values and a similar history.

Trafacka was created in 2006 as a gallery and residential space located in an old power station in an industrial district of Prague.
After a couple of years, the place was occupied by more than 100 living and working artists in 36 studios, exhibiting in Trafo Gallery. More than 200 projects took place over the course of 8 years, until the place was finally destroyed in 2014. In 2016, the gallery managed to relocate in a former slaughterhouse (Vietnamese market of Prague, across the river from the historical center). Trafo Gallery was reborn with a 200 sqm gallery space and 4 artist studios. The artist-run gallery presents six exhibitions and six books per year with a focus on the new contemporary Czech art scene and the genres of street art, sculptures, abstraction painting, and digital art.

In the words of Blanka Čermáková, Director of Trafo Gallery: „One exhibition per year is a sort of barter with international projects and galleries which this year leads us to Berlin, city of art, angels and friends. Eight artists based in Prague, united with a long term bond to Trafo Gallery and our history, – Ira Svobodová, Jan Kaláb, Jakub Nepraš, Michal Cimala, Michal Škapa, Jan Vytiska, Robert Šalanda and Jakub Janovský – represent strong personalities and different art expressions. Ira Svobodová paints exact architectural compositions and builds perspective with colors and shadows, Jan Kaláb, a well known artist to Urban Spree with strong street art roots and perfect color and shapes styles, Jakub Nepraš shape sculptures as a platform for his vivid videocollages of microscopic worlds of nature and human babylons, Michal Cimala composes sculptures made often from collected material to existentialist compositions. Graffiti legend Michal Škapa works with urban scenery, apocalyptic and architecture destruction or using expressive colors when writing his crypted rune texts on canvases. Jan Vytiska is a painter of zombie romantic and surrealistic stories often based in forest neighbourhood or in postapocalyptic times. Robert Šalanda works with paper collages of abstract color shapes and transpose it to canvases where playfully upgrades new compositions with gradient colors. Last but not least Jakub Janovský is recognizable with his figurative drawings and often black and white coloring, silicon, enamel or airbrush outlines and ironic reflecting of society problems and characters.

All of these artists, whether picturing abstract motives, displaying the view of their world around or in their visions, are the subatomic particles bonding Trafo Gallery fluidum together. Without them, Trafo Gallery would never exist“.

In June 2019, Urban Spree’s artists will be hosted in Prague by Trafo Gallery.

Berlin Food Art Week: Dance Performance with InCorpo

12th July 2017 – 18:30h Urban Spree

InCorpo / Impro n. 4 – Eating or not eating (2017)

The dance improvisation performance belongs to a series of site specific performances that are taking place in public locations. “Impro n. 4 – Eating or not eating” has been commissioned by Entretempo Kitchen Gallery and is presented within the Berlin Food Art Week Festival 2017. Having the dance improvisation as a solid base, the performance is also characterised by the projection of recorded texts that will be directed in space through the dancers bodies. The texts are made of interviews: InCorpo brings to the public the Berliner citizens‘ opinions and reflections about food and in particular about meat consumption. This subject brings together a wide variety of opposite ideas really debated nowadays. All these thoughts are expressed both in English and German. InCorpo’s interest about site specific performances comes from the belief that dance is a physical art form that can be accessible to everyone, finding inspirations and creative influences from the environment in which is presented.

About InCorpo:
It is a receptive ground in which contemporary dance operates in relationship to other art-forms.
It has been established by Raffaella Galdi, who conceives and guides the activities and who is developing a dance methodology to share and pass on her experience and knowledge in dance.
InCorpo stands not only to promote and support the choreographic and dance-pedagogic work of its founder, but also collaborates on projects initiated by other artists. InCorpo nourishes a field on which artists, often dealing with different languages, get in contact and create together. InCorpo has an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach.
The name InCorpo (”into the body”) comes from the understanding that anything which is created and expressed comes into “embodiment” within a form, so it “takes a body”: from dance to plastic art, from video to painting or drawing, from music to writing or spoken language. Any creative act is an expression of the invisible, present everywhere and in each of us. It manifests itself within a body, however this form may be or appear.

LOW BROS: CON.TXT

The Hamburg-based duo LOW BROS (formerly based in Berlin) is no stranger to Urban Spree, having painted the Wall two times and having been regular guests here.

However, „CON.TEXT“ is their first solo show with the Gallery. The starting point of the exhibition is to study the white privilege situation enjoyed in the US (and elsewhere) and – again – highlighted by the death of George Floyd, which triggered a worldwide massive awareness and protests.

„CON.TXT“ opens on Friday, August 7th, 2020 at 18:30 in presence of the artists.

« With the #BlackLivesMatters movement sweeping the global community, it is now, more than ever, that white people need to acknowledge their responsibility to dismantle oppressive, racist systems. Influenced by the book ‚Exit Racism‘ by Tupoka Ogette & Robin DiAngelo’s ‚White Fragility,‘ Low Bros have partnered with IDB (Institut für diskriminierungsfreie Bildung), Josephine Apraku and Jule Bönkost for this exhibition. As an educational starting point, this exhibition aims to amplify and continue the conversation surrounding white privilege and asks questions of how it can be better utilized in institutions, as well as private & public spaces. While the search for answers is ongoing, the artworks aim is to highlight the problems of unchecked whiteness, especially when it is being recognized as a default perspective in society. By debunking the concept of privileges and problems, the context of this exhibition aims to engage whiteness as an ally to the BIPOC community. Join the conversation to learn, unlearn and relearn about this topic at Urban Spree, Berlin, on 07.08.2020 ».  Anna Ptasinska

About the artists:

Low Bros are a German post-graffiti artist duo made up of brothers Christoph (b.1984) and Florin Schmidt (b.1982). With a background in street culture and an interest in contemporary developments, they explore a self coined ‘Retro-Futuristic’ vibe. From their collective memory of the 80s and 90s, the Low Bros create a vantage point from which to reimagine the present future; a perception which refocuses the conflicts they embody in the modern age. The Low Bros live and work in Hamburg, Germany.

WALLS

For their first show of 2020, Urban Spree Galerie presents « WALLS », a collective exhibition featuring 30 international artists and dedicated to the notion of the « wall ».

Curated by Fabrice Douar and Cyrille Gouyette (Le Louvre Museum, Paris) and co-curated by Pascal Feucher (Urban Spree Galerie, Berlin), « WALLS » invites prominent artists from both the comics scene and the street art scene to create graphic works of fiction related to walls, interpreted either as simple architectural elements, ominous symbols of segregation, canvases and vessels to convey meaning, textures, or imaginary playgrounds and labyrinths.

While some antique artefacts appear in the show to testify of their immortal, silent presence, in the 21st Century, the Minotaur doesn’t wait at the center of his realm but has clearly moved outside, demultiplied its presence, and is building more walls.

The exhibition’s direction is therefore resolutely multifaceted, contemporary and graphic-oriented, spanning several topographies (Europe, South Korea, Middle East, Hong Kong, Cuba…), and art forms (painting, photography, installations, videos).

„underneath DISTEL’s third full length release lies a thorough personal re-evaluation of truth, unveiling and being. ‚wapens‘ is the dutch word for ‚weapons‘ and also translates to ‘family crests‘ or ‘coats of arms‘. however, a third sense, more specifically related to the kindred word ‘wapenen‘, is explored in the title track’s lyrics which propose a state of being wherein the self becomes an existential monolith – becomes focally reinforced in the sense that its presence refers first and foremost to only its own individual being instead of the networks of meaning that we tend to define ourselves by.
DISTEL’s intention while working on this album was to achieve a more direct, massive and monolithic sound than before: to channel most energy through an insistent impulse within the rhythmic and melodic movement – from stomping stabs to legato motion – and make every other embellishment secondary. this initial thought is the core of the music on this album and an overall synthesised modern classical mode is the guideline for new tracks. another aim is to show more colour, truth and openness – and this openness is obviously echoed in the sound of the album itself. thematically ‚wapens‘ includes many references to end times, apocalyptic visions, embodiment and authenticity towards death. while its predecessors presented the ‘muffled sounds from within’, now the pandora‘s box has been opened for all to gaze upon its vast spectrum of horrors.
the self-applied tag ‚ultra / angst pop‘ could now be redefined from the original industrial-based minimal electronics into a unique contemporary strain of high energy synth-pop-noir, or ‚dark energy‘. a quite evocative mixture of excellent subliminal rhythm machine programming, predominant purging keyboard lines and swirling spectral vocals result in twisted dark wave pieces with a catchy approach carrying an overwhelming, coercive energy.“

„After the highly successful first album ‘Guilt Kollektion’ – sold out almost immediately – here comes the long awaited brand new album by the still young Swedish EBM institution, containing 11 tracks of amazing darknoise and EBM! ALVAR: pulsing, shadows, thrilling rhythms, furious loops and a feeling of total takeover of your soul.
ALVAR from Öland/Sweden, ‘discovered’ by Dirk Ivens (Klinik, Absolute Body Control, Sonar, Dive… & founder of Daft) 2 years ago, making music inspired by deserted places, forgotten houses and old legends. Alvar offer a clash between techno, old school industrial and EBM in a unique combination that makes this fresh new act extraordinary!“
