Anthony Lister: Sneaky Bit In

Urban Spree Galerie presents « Sneaky Bit In« , a solo show by the Australian visual & street artist Anthony Lister. The Opening of the show will be on Friday, September 14th, 2018 in the presence of the artist.

Invited by Urban Spree as part of our Artist-in-Residence program, Lister spent 3 weeks at Urban Spree between August and September 2018 to create in situ a whole new body of large scale works, installations, media art, and a large mural.

For this residency project, Lister incorporated a large palette of references stemming from cubism, Picasso’s « Les Demoiselles d’Avignon » and « Guernica« , Alejandro Jodorowski’s « The Holy Montain« , African masks, religion, divination and tarot, Aboriginal trans women, and direct references to Damien Hirst.

Lister’s outdoor mural at Urban Spree is a variation and alternate narrative on the theme of the main painting of the exhibition, in a style reminiscent of Egon Schiele and incorporating elements of Picasso’s Guernica. The wall was executed with a 6m long extension pole, and signed with a paint-filled fire extinguisher.

Anthony Lister (b. 1979 in Brisbane) is a contemporary Australian-born painter and installation artist, best known for his merging of “high” and “low” cultural imagery. Particularly well known as a street artist, Lister is considered amongst the best in the field with graffiti art legend Banksy even commenting that Lister appears to piss great art in his sleep.

He studied at the Griffith Queensland College of Art and was further educated under mentor Max Gimblett in New York City. Lister helped pioneer the street art movement in his home city as a teenager and is considered Australia’s premier street artist.

Lister employs multiple media including charcoal, acrylic, spray paint, oil pastels to create his scrawling, figurative style.

Lister has exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Lazarides Gallery in London, Underdogs Gallery in Lisbon, New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles, Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York, Olsen Gallery in Sydney, Black Art Projects in Melbourne, Fireworks Gallery in Brisbane, and Allouche Gallery in New York City.

Lister currently lives and works between Sydney and New York City.

Mik Shida: A Conduit Order

Urban Spree Galerie presents « A Conduit Order », the first solo show in Germany of the Australian visual artist and muralist Mik Shida.

Mik Shida was invited to Berlin by Urban Spree for a 2-month Art Residency which culminates into a presentation of a full new body of works, including large format paintings and installations.

Shida’s paintings are shamanic « tableaux vivants » in which spiritual, ritualistic and organic elements coalesce, where temporality is transient, boundaries and space indistinct, where force fields, passageways, alternative dimensions, spells and energy fields abound.

Spirits and movement are the materia prima of Shida’s oeuvre. The artist is a vessel, a conduit, through which sprits awaken, arise, and finally materialize within the paintings, within those transient spaces where the artist is allowed to conduct the dance, and is in turn being directed by the creations his paintings have summoned.

In parallel to Shida’s presentation of works in our main galerie space, Urban Spree invites Knarf, Fresh Max and Mafia Tabak for a pop up exhibition in our « Ecke ».

HELL’O COLLECTIVE: BALANCE

Opening on Friday 01.06 at 19:00, Urban Spree Galerie invites you to the Opening of “Balance“, a solo presentation of new works by the famed belgian duo Hell’O Collective in our main galerie space and their first solo show in Germany.

Running in parallel with their retrospective museum solo show at the BAM in Mons (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mons, Belgium), “Balance” brings a brand new series of paintings on canvas and on paper to the Berlin audience.

For the Brussels-based duo, “Balance” reflects upon the constant search of the equilibrium between shape, color, and momentum in their painting practice.

Hell’O will also sign their new monograph “Untitled Oddyssey“, published in early May by CFC Editions, and Urban Spree Prints will also release 2 screenprints specially made by the duo for the occasion.

Hell’O is a belgian artistic duo consisting of Antoine Detaille and Jérôme Meynen, active in murals as well as studio works and installations.

Several characteristics of their art indicate a filiation with the middle-age universe close to Jerome Bosch: an elegant and precise graphism, a taste for multiple, intertwined universes, and abundant references to a corpus of grotesque iconography, albeit perfectly mastered. Abstracted human bodies are among the many recurrent elements that are present in their paintings together with abstract, geometric signs, creating an overall rich personal mythology.

Bisco Smith: Journey

Urban Spree Galerie is inviting the NYC-based visual artist Bisco Smith (b.1980) for a 3-week art residency at Urban Spree.

During his Berlin residency, Bisco Smith will be creating a whole new body of large scale works that will culminate in a solo show in the galerie from 08.03.2018 to 21.04.2018.

« Journey » will bring the visitor to the universe of Bisco’s largely freestyle and calligraffiti-inspired black-and-white visual beats.

Bisco’s roots lie in music, graffiti, and street art. He works in a variety of formats, including canvas and large outdoor murals, and his style can be characterized as a blend of graffiti deconstruction, gestural abstraction, and lyric-based stylewriting. Made predominantly with a black and white color palette, his art visually captures the rhythms of music and the energy of the moment through its spontaneous marks and abstracted text.

His work is regularly exhibited in major markets and is collected by both national and international collectors.

Jim Avignon: « Business as Unusual » Book Release + Concert

4 months after his solo show « Permanent Jetlag« , Jim Avignon returns to Urban Spree Galerie for the special launch of « Business as Unusual« , the most complete monograph of the German artist to date, spanning 30 years of an unacademic career in 400+ illustrations.

The painter, illustrator and conceptual artist Jim Avignon is one of the most unconventional characters in the current German art world. Vibrant colours and unpretentious materials, a good dose of wit and an enormous output are his trademarks. For the first time an opulent monograph allows a comprehensive insight into the complex oeuvre of the artist, who has always sought confrontation with the establishment and who could never decide whether he wanted to be pop-art, street-art, Picasso on acid or whether he was simply the fastest painter in the world.
Avignon’s narrative about « things not going as planned » is full of concise quips and not without a certain delight. He expounds his peculiar relationship with the art market and describes the exhibitions that finally put him on the map as an exceptional artist. We get to read about odd detours into the world of commerce, a stolen bear, paintings that need ironing, call-for-help socks and how a mural almost landed him in jail. Avignon spills the beans about the high and lows of one of the strangest careers the art world has seen in the last 25 years—expect a lot of detail, an ironic undertone and an abundance of images.

« Business as Unusual » is a hardcover, 160 pages, 400 illustrations book published by the local imprint The Green Box with texts written by ATAK, Sandra Prill, and Lars Willumeit.
