Amazing X-M4rk3t Vol. 002

After last year’s success, the AMAZING X-M4RK3T returns to Urban Spree for a second edition on Sunday, December 4th, 2016.

The AMAZING X-M4RK3T is a Christmas market for the digital age with workshops, geek vendors, VR exhibition, music & food.

Powered by Europe’s premier indie video games festival AMAZE., the market is a place where you can warm your cold hands on hot circuits and blowing GPU fans, where you find mysterious objects from the depth of NET and other fabricated paraphernalia of connected madness: 3d-printed characters, home-brewed experimental videogames, DIY synths, 4 dimensional board games, digital toys, robots, hacked software on worn out USB sticks, collections of love songs for your cyberboyfriend, wearables, implants, postcards from VR, magazines, tiny pieces of paper with unknown URLs, fanzines, comics, illustrations, paintings, books, clothes and food.

Marching Church

Marching Church – Official
“Live in Berlin”
18.11.2016

Einlass: 19:00 I Beginn: 20:00
VVK: 12,00 € zzgl. Geb.

Tickets sind ab sofort überall erhältlich!

Although I have done a few things under the Marching Church moniker since 2010, the project, as in the constellation on this album, was born in November 2013 with Kristian Emdal, Anton Rothstein, Cæcilie Trier, Bo H. Hansen and Frederikke Hoffmeier.

We had agreed to play with Pharmakon at Mayhem, our warehouse space in Copenhagen, even though i hadn’t done anything with the project for quite some time. With two months before the show, I threw together a few half-thought-out ideas and sketches, presented them to the new band, and was amazed to see how the songs took life in their hands. I had a picture in my head of me in a comfortable arm chair, adorned in a golden robe, leading a band while a girl kept pouring me champagne. “What would this picture sound like?” was the question.

For some songs I was inspired by my friend Jamie Cripps, who unfortunately is no longer with us, and his project The Pale Horse, as well as a record by David Maranha called Antarctica that I was played one night at my favourite bar, The Nightingale in Tokyo. Those records made me want to create something that sounded half asleep and like it was being dragged across the ground, or smoldering in a bonfire, in order to keep on playing. At least that was the initial inspiration, in time it got a bit overtaken with an idea of being the leader of a soul group—people likeJames Brown, Young Americans-era David Bowie, and Sam Cooke were inspirations in this aspect.

Improvisation, something I have never done before, was crucial in the making of this album. The album works because of the band’s incredible ability of breathing life into these loosely written and at times very simple ideas and experiments. Though Marching Church might be a dictatorship, This World is Not Enough was very much a collaborative effort. Everyone involved does other projects as well, but I wouldn’t want to see it as a “side project.” That term seems degrading.

In conclusion, half-disgusted with talking about myself, I’m going to leave you with This World Is Not Enough—eight songs of nocturnal longing, preposterous self-obsession and cockeyed etiquette.

Love,
Elias B. Rønnenfelt

Info

Urban Spree is a 1700 sqm artistic space in Berlin-Friedrichshain dedicated to urban cultures through exhibitions, artist residencies, DIY workshops, concerts, an art store and a large Biergarten.

Within Urban Spree, the Urban Spree Galerie is a 400 sqm independent contemporary urban art space. Set in a 70.000 sqm postindustrial compound in the heart of Berlin, the gallery benefits from its large urban grassroots ecosystem and offers its invited artists and photographers an ideal space for experimentation through ambitious on-site residencies. The gallery curates independent art shows on a monthly basis, which most likely include the painting of the whole compound and its flagship “Artist Wall“, a 15 m long x 8 m high wall surface facing Warschauer Str., one of the busiest arteries of Berlin, counting 100.000 visitors/day. Artists who painted the wall in the past include Above, Klone, Zevs, Broken Fingaz Crew, Twoone, Low Bros, Nychos, 1UP Crew, The Grifters, Peachbeach, Rylsee, m-city, Johannes Mundinger, Jim Avignon, Mik Shida, Anthony Lister and many more.

The Urban Spree Bookshop is located in the gallery and displays a hand-picked, organic selection of street art, graffiti and photography books whose common thread is a vision of cities, post-industrial & decayed spaces. The shop includes a large selection of screen prints made by local & international street artists whom we personally know. The Print Shop also offers an array of locally-designed and produced screen printed T-Shirts. To accompany our rich selection of zines and self published books, we launched Urban Spree Books at the end of 2016 as a new venture to promote self-publishing.

Artist Residencies are at the core of our artistic ecosystem. A mix of permanent, medium term and guest studios, the residencies irrigate by their creativity and artistic contributions what Urban Spree is about. Currently, our residents include Andrea Wan, Rylsee, Tavar Zawacki/Above, Johannes Mundinger, and the screen printing activities of Dolly Demoratti’s Mother Drucker.

Regular DIY workshops such as the monthly Make Your Own Sign powered by Rylsee and Klub7’s Otto Baum, engage our guests in creative activities.

Urban Spree’s Concert Room is dedicated to live music with a high level programming and a large musical spectrum from garage, psych rock to cutting-edge electronic music. In addition, Urban Spree organizes the Urban Spree Summer Sessions, showcasing the best street musicians that Berlin has to offer every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening in the Biergarten.

Urban Spree is home to many festivals and events, such as the Pictoplasma Festival, Krake Festival, ComicInvasionBerlin, Berlin SeaFood Festival, Amaze Festival, Midsommar Festival, Druck Berlin Festival, Berlin Graphic Days, outdoor screenings, diner events and many more.

The Biergarten is the place to chill in summer with its own selection of local and german craft beers.

Resident street food container units provide our guests with homemade food around the clock.

Please kindly note that the gallery doesn’t consider at the moment submission of portfolios and exhibition projects. Contact: galerie@urbanspree.com
