Urban Spree Gallery Presents

Bottleneck

The first German solo show of the Broken Fingaz Crew

Founded along the Haifa shores around 2001, the wandering Street Art Crew, the Broken Fingaz Crew has adorned many murals in numerous cities worldwide in the past decade.

The crew is made of 4 artists (Deso, Kip, Tant and Unga) who collectively define the imagery of the Broken Fingaz, which includes numerous references to the American pulp & Marvel comics, B-movies of the 70’s and 80’s, psychedelic & pop art, collage & poster works, Szenenbildner, Italian giallo genre that composes an original & visually striking iconography.

Their drawing and spraying skills, masterful sense of composition and selection of pop colors and pop/comics imagery have made them over time one of the most admired street art crews, in the wake of US power duo Faile (also for their installation skills) and British pop master D*Face.

The crew has seldom participated in exhibitions so far with only some appearances in the famed ‘Old Truman Brewery’ in London and at the ‘Inoperable Galerie’ in Vienna.

On October 10th is the opening of their stunning art show in Berlin at Urban Spree. The show will be divided in three sections: Their first realization, the ‘Berlin Sticker Pack’ wall at Urban Spree  is a collection of graphic vignettes cleverly inspired by the Holocaust and becomes the first step of the exhibition. The giant pop up wood installation and a series of silk screen prints will be the second step.

Berlin has always been a magnet and reference to the crew. And It’s now for the Broken Fingaz the occasion to deliver an astounding artistic manifesto to the German capital.

Dubl Trubl

Curated by Dscreet, the Dubl Trubl exhibition at Urban Spree gathered 90 street and graffiti artists predominantly from the London scene to work in duos and display artworks made on a collaboration basis.

The outcome is a vivid, free-spirited, and grassroots street art show where most artists have displayed a more graffiti-oriented vision, both on the walls painted outside or in the works shown in the gallery. « Back to the roots of street art » in a way, this spirit being also embodied in the dubl trubl dark humored series of videos.

For instance, on the big Urban Spree Wall (12 meters long on 7 meters high), Paul Insect sprayed 2 stoned cute characters on the bottom sides while Reka painted the 2 characters on top inspired by double dragon arcade gaming style, featuring local heroes Super Kotti vs. Friedrichshain Megapunk. This very joyous, no pressure, and often dark & gritty humored dubl trubl spirit (as if powered remotely by Lush) infused the whole place during a fantastic week that culminated with a wonderful and massive opening.

Out of the 90 dubl-trubl-crew members, about 25 artists have made the trip to Berlin to participate to the whole repainting of the Urban Spree compound.

Montana Cans offered 500 cans for the show and it was decided to limit the color range to only 3 colors: power yellow, white & black, – the colors of the dubl trubl logo – to induce a massive impact on visitors and make it more cohesive.

Inside, the show goes in the gallery space and in the new section with about 50 artworks, both from emerging and confirmed artists.

Another milestone of the show was the epic erection of Christiaan Nagel‘s biggest realization so far, the mega mushroom! A 7-meter high electric blue mushroom, grown out a dead tree.

For the finissage on October 25th, a dubl trubl zine is currently in the making which documents the adventure and spirit of the show.

The whole series of hand-painted prints of Teufelsberg drawn by Chrisse Kunst will be on display for the finissage. More artists are working currently on the ongoing project and the result will be an exceptional rendering of this mythical place west of Berlin, today a prime graffiti spot inside an abandoned NSA spying station (dubl trubl vs. the Soviets), built on a 120 meters artificial hill itself made from the rubble of WWII bombed Berlin houses, erected to cover the location of a Nazi building whose walls were so thick (8m concrete and steel) that it couldn’t be blown up by explosives!

Wives (& Highest Sea) • Berlin

WIVES
21.11.2019 Berlin – Urban Spree
Doors: 20:00 Uhr, Start: 21:00 Uhr
Tickets: www.greyzone-tickets.de/produkte/386

A new pearl has formed from the haze of the New York DIY scene: Wives.
The band around Jay Beach (guitar, vocals), Andrew Bailey (guitar), Alex Crawford (bass) and Adam Sachs (drums) released their first song « Waving Past Nirvana » in March 2019,
But behind « Waving Past Nirvana » there is no story about the legacy of Cobain, according to Jay Beach it’s about something completely different:

« Waving Past Nirvana » is a literal interpretation of the bodhisattva-one who has achieved the release, the awakened eye, and yet wants to trade it back for the painful life of desire because she/he/they predominantly feels compassion. This « entering back into the world » to fight a fool’s battle is the essence of « Waving Past Nirvana », and the video depicts one young woman’s journey along these lines.
Musically the Slackers catapult us back into the golden 90s. The implied noise of Sonic Youth meets the nervous hooks of the Pixies and merges with the wonderfully necessary vocals à la J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr). If you are not completely averse to the reference bands mentioned above, you should definitely remember this formation.

The quartet is currently working on their first album « So Removed », which will be released on 28 June via City Slang. But before that they will play some shows – including a concert in Germany. Let’s hope for seconds, after the release.

« Here Comes the Bad News »: New Solo Show with Jim Avignon

Jim Avignon returns to Urban Spree Galerie for his second solo show « Here Comes the Bad News », 2 years after « Permanent Jetlag ».

In his only exhibition in Berlin for the year 2019, Jim Avignon describes the mood in the world and in Berlin in particular with his usual wit.

Gentrification, Global Warming, Surveillance Capitalism, Alt Right… here comes indeed the bad news. His paintings are a mash-up of cartoony figuration, expressionistic composition, – a maximum of expression with a minimum of lines.

Jim Avignon is a painter, illustrator and conceptual artist. Always ready to confront the establishment he is torn between pop art, street art, Picasso on acid or simply being the fastest painter in the world. His signature style consists of vivid colours, a biting humor, unpretentious materials and a mind numbing output. His art works like pop music in DIY mode.

According to the legend, the artist became stranded in the Provence city of Avignon at some point in the ’80s when his car unexpectedly broke down. He resorted to painting Dali images onto pavements, gradually raising money to repair his car. The name stayed.

In the early 90s, he became an ubiquitous painter of the techno movement, designing makeshift clubs and Love Parade trucks.

By creating a colorful flood of affordable, rapidly-produced works, Jim disrupts the well-oiled art market and pervades it with black humor and self-irony. Avignon’s images caricature the modus operandi of the art market and are also aimed at people who are bored or deterred by the gold-framed aura of so-called high art. « Good Artists Go To The Museum, Bad Artists Go Everywhere ».
