No More Crew: Jan Kaláb, Pasta Oner, Michal Škapa

NO MORE CREW

KALÁB / PASTA / ŠKAPA

A strong trio. Grew up together. Long-standing friendships. Shared experience. Rocket engines. Parallel beginnings. Trajectories that have diverged over time, but remain firmly connected, consecrated by the code of graffiti. The No More Crew brotherhood.

An exhibition built around the confrontation of its participants – a trio of friends, all distinct figures, and not only in terms of the Czech art scene. The mutual confrontation comes at no risk. Jan Kaláb, Pasta Oner and Michal Škapa are equals. What they share is tenacity, ambition, drive, vigor, audacity, humor, and every now and then also a wall, as well as mutual friends and their common age. What distinguishes them is their approach, form, tools, the venues of their solo exhibitions, the locations of their respective studios, and the number of their children.

With the soul of an architect, Jan Kaláb easily conquers the third dimension not only in his murals, but also in his canvases. He has grown to embrace the painter within, and although his forte is the creation of objects he has been chiseling away at geometric abstraction, discovering spaces interior and without, regardless of the clichéd expression “that’s been done.”

The same could be said of Pasta Oner. It is possible to cite the clearly visible sources of inspiration, identify the specific paraphrases. Yet one must also take into account the force and accuracy with which he mirrors the conservative Central European mindset. How spot-on is his commentary on the bad habits of consumerism, or the directness with which he tackles the large format through his short post-pop messages.

Michal Škapa, by contrast, works with the moment of replication, the multiplication of a graphic element, with a hand patently the descendant of an expert graffiti artist. His style is ornamental, rhythmic, abstract and concrete at the same time. He is the draughtsman of his canvases, the transmitter of symbols, creator of expansive mural-format comics with unsettling subject matter.

The exhibition No More Crew at Urban Spree Galerie presents a trio of disparate and yet splendidly and mutually complementary artists. Their work defies being simply the result of the overused epithet “drawing on street art”, and at the same time any confrontation with their work requires such a label. Space, place, city, symbol, sign. Something for everybody.

Biographies:

Michal Škapa (*1978) alias TRON belongs to the most expressive wave of Czech (Prague) writers with many achievements to his credit. He is engaged in countless graphic activities with the magazines “Free Magazine” and “Upstream”, ranging from festival visuals, books, CD covers for bands, web design, and the creation of original fonts, to the design of posters and invitations to arts events. His graphics projects of the recent period include Names Festival, Kick the Shit! Bitch!, OBR, the Thick-skinned Moviegoers’ Festival for the Aero Movie Theater, IFP, visuals for the Bigg Boss label, etc. In addition to computer graphics, who also produces drawings and airbrush works. He brings his vivid imagination to bear on graffiti and visual effects. Member of CAP, NUTS, DSK a TOYZ!

Pasta Oner is one of the most original figures on the Czech contemporary art scene. Ever a creative mind, Pasta Oner has, in the recent years and in keeping with his graffiti and street art roots which go back to the turn of the millenium, focused on asserting himself within the system of independent and publicly funded galleries. He weds pop-art to cartoon, transcending both categories.

Although he touches, at the core of his philosophy, on the principles of post-production, Pasta Oner stands apart from the current trend of post-conceptualism and blazes his trail in the Czech art world as a media-savvy and widely known, if slightly controversial artist.

The work of Pasta Oner presents an original, ironic commentary on contemporary popular culture. Pasta Oner’s traditional themes of obsession with money, sex, religion, luxury goods and the consumerist notions of beauty are translated into new contexts characterised by the technologisation of life, the increasing speed of information and the short attention-span aesthetics of today’s culture. It is into this world, of which Pasta – like all of us – is a part, that he brings his engaged art.

When Jan Kaláb was born in 1978 in Czechoslovakia, graffiti was not to be seen in the Eastern World. In the nineties, as the country was opening itself to western influences, he became one of the pioneer of the local scene, and founded an iconic crew, the DSK. Sleepless nights around train yards, light tubes at police stations and above all hard work on his style: he went through all the classical steps of a writer’s career. Through Europe, he made a name for himself as Cakes. Next step to the Hall of fame: New York, where he made a big impression by painting whole cars in 2000, alongside with Key and Rome. Around the same time, he found a new way to push his own limits and under the name Point, he sculpted and installed huge abstracts letters in the streets and on the walls. This was another form of graffiti, in daylight, and without a spray, but truthful to the spirit of competition and innovation of the urban scene. Those sculptures lead him to abstraction, a path he’s been exploring through canvas from 2007, using acrylic painting and brushes. In the meantime, this admirer of Kupka graduated from the Academy of fine Arts of Prague – becoming the first Czech writer to do so.

Jan Kaláb had his first solo exhibition in 2008 in Prague. Others solos took place in Romania, Argentina, Germany or in the United States.

Škapa, Kaláb and Pasta often exhibited together (for example: 2009 –Storage, Prague, The Chemistry Gallery, 2011 – Boutique, Prague, The Chemistry Gallery, 2011 – Can You Dig It?, Brussels/Belgium, Pragues House) and they organised shows or met many times together at group shows (2008 – City Celebrities, Brno, Moravská galerie in Brno, 2008 – Names (streetart festival), Prague, Trafacka, 2010 – Metropolis, Shanghai/China, EXPO 2010, Czech pavilion, 2010 – Corners, Shanghai, Beijing/China, Source, 2010 – Metropolis, Prague, DOX, 2012 – Possessed by the City, Prague, Galerie hlavního města Prahy – Městská knihovna).

Oranssi Pazuzu – Aluk Todolo – Cobalt

16681620_1370151299722631_4461425035955712240_n

Oranssi Pazuzu
“The trick is to avoid all the bands that are bragging about genre breaking or how mind blowing they are and just listen to Oranssi Pazuzu”. This quote from Fenriz’s radio show couldn’t have been a better spot on statement for the phenomenon that is Finland’s Oranssi Pazuzu.
Since their inception, Oranssi Pazuzu has never been satisfied to stick with a formula. Each album has seen the band expand upon its previous incarnation and then, like a supernova, blow it up and transform again into something recognizable but completely new. With their first two albums, they slowly built a fuzz for their unique take on black metal’s pscyhedelia and despite using this genre as a platform it was their third album, Valonielu (2013), that solidified the band’s position as one of the most forward-thinking and interesting metal bands and gave purists a ran for their money. With press and fans praising the brilliance of that album, their live shows established them even more to the point where their live experience could be compared to the ones of Pink Floyd, Swans and Neurosis. And that’s coming from everybody that witnessed them on their tours and festivals performances all around Europe.
Their return on 2016 with their fourth album, Värähtelijä, gives the band much more room to diverge and explore the vast regions of hypnotic progressive psychedelia and the nebulous outer limits of Scandinavian black metal. Songs explode with radiant ultraviolet color and plunge into the deep black darkness of innermost consciousness. If ‘Valonielu’ was the creation of a universe, ‘Värähtelijä’ is the magnification and expansion of its infinite boundaries. With the album ending up on many best albums of the year lists, and not only in the metal circles, 2017 will be the busiest year for the band on stage starting with the “Mental Possessed Tour” where the band brings with them 2 of their peers, Aluk Todolo and Cobalt (on their first European tour) on selected days and making this tour not to be missed!
The “Mental Possessed Tour” will also coincide with the reissues of Oranssi Pazuzu’s backcatalogue including their first 2 albums, which have been sold out since their release, an EP consisting of the band’s material from their 2010 split with Candy Cane and also a limited 10” vinyl with two unreleased songs, which will be sold only on their live dates!
Not meant for genre purists, Oranssi Pazuzu are on a trip all their own; modern electric pioneers on an expedition to unlock the keys to the hidden spaces all around and inside us.

ALUK TODOLO is an instrumental power trio performing Occult Rock since 2004. Their music is a methodical exploration of the powers of musical trance. Part occult black metal fiend and part snide kraut menace, the band conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings. ALUK TODOLO reduces psychedelic improvisation to a bare, telluric instrumentation, in which dry, spare percussion grievously mines the scrapes, shrieks and shimmer of mutated guitar and bass. The band’s sound is monolithic and stabbing, hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming: a dangerous, noxious coil of all things black.

The name ALUK TODOLO was brought back from a mountainous region of South Sulawesi in Indonesia, it’s an ancient religion with animist beliefs meaning «the Way of the Ancestors». The band toured in USA in 2009 and 2012, Southern Europe in May 2010 (France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal), Northern Europe in April 2011 with MENACE RUINE (France, UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Czech republik, Switzerland) and Eastern Europe in May 2013 with the one man band LUSSURIA from New York (Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republik, Poland, Austria, Hungaria, Croatia, Solvenia, Italia, France), around the Alps in June 2016 with SUM OF R from Switzerland (France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Czech Republik, Hungary, Austria). ALUK TODOLO opened for FAUST (German krautrock pioneers) in New York in October 2009. They have been invited by SUNN O))) to play the Roadburn Festival 2011 in the Tilburg – Netherlands and opened for them in June 2012. They played festivals such as Incubate (Netherlands), Stella Natura (usa), Dark Bombastic Evening (Romania), Mega Therion (Finland), Colmar Jazz Off (France), Luff (Switzerland), le Guess Who ? (Netherlands), Sonic Protest (France), Funkelfug (Austria), Amplifest (Portugal), Chaos Descends (Germany), and will play in 2017 the Stardust IV (New York USA) and the Roadburn (Netherlands).

An archive collection of rare recordings from their first decade will be released in 2017 as well as the 4 albums on tape on Seratusribu records from Indonesia.

Cobalt

War Metal is the most fitting title Cobalt could choose to kick off their career. There is a deep sense of struggle and urgency, a devastating cause that left absolute carnage through its path that the band’s music radiated since the time of their inception. Cobalt, as nature, is red in tooth and claw, and there is no desire of hiding it.

This struggle, this unbroken will to battle and conflict was peaked with the genre-defining Eater of Birds, a testament to the spirit of the US black metal scene. Pouring with aggression and oozing with a primal energy, Cobalt showcased a unique blend of bitter black metal, a traditional approach that was rehashed and in turn rejuvenated. The additions of Americana, folk and noise do not necessarily provide an experimental approach to black metal, but rather a different interpretation of its historic, pure form. The imagery of Hemingway on the cover of Gin makes perfect sense, depicting the literary background of Gin and its influence on Cobalt’s ethos: the perfection of one’s craft, the certainty and conviction to one’s belief and the stoic perspective.

Hemingway’s famously writes: “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” This could not be more true for Cobalt, who saw the departure of vocalist Phil McSorley in 2014. Mainman Erik Wunder did not allow this to become the end of the road for his black metal endeavors, and recruiting Charlie Fell (ex-Lord Mantis) has worked wonders for the band and the quality of their releases. In 2016 they proved that they belong at the very top of the food chain releasing what is their finest work in Slow Forever, a double album filled with all the elements that their glorious past has produced, but also with an eye staring at the future and the path that lays ahead. This is Cobalt at its best. Uncompromising, relentless, hungry, constantly hunting and out for blood.

Onmens

ONMENS from Belgium /// 21.09. /// URBAN SPREE

http://onmens.be/
http://www.facebook.com/onmensbaar

“Belgiums most explicit electronic music group” (HUMO)
“Onmens furnish post-punk riffs with spooky electronics. One of the most promising Belgian Noise rock bands – The shape of punk to come.” (The Guardian)

“Witruimte” klingt wie ein Drogentrip von The Prodigy” (Fuze Magazine)

“ONMENS zelebrieren textlich Selbstzerstörung und Zerrissenheit und unterstreichen diese gekonnt in ihren Arrangements. Was ONMENS auszeichnet ist das Fektum, alles andere als retro zu sein. Sie sind der authentische Klang eines No-Future-Lifestyles, der selten in Klangwelten, sondern eher in rauschhafte Fluchtversuche übersetzt wird.” (Legacy)

(Medienkonverter)

WHAT THE WEEKEND IS GALLERY: A BERLIN GROUP SHOW

From 28.04 to 01.05, the Berlin-based art association THE ART UNION presents WHAT THE WEEKEND IS GALLERY, a group show featuring artworks by 58 Berlin based artists at the Urban Spree Galerie.

The title of the exhibition is a humorous reference to the official Gallery Weekend Berlin, which takes place at the same time. Urban contemporary art is one of Berlin’s defining characteristics, but will hardly be on display at the official Gallery Weekend whose official map doesn’t even cover the area where Urban Spree is located, albeit quite central. THE ART UNION aims to bridge this gap by presenting diverse artistic perspectives following the idea of ONE CITY – ONE WEEKEND – ONE GALLERY – 58 ARTISTS.

ARVE Error: The Vimeo endpoint located at http://vimeo.com/api/oembed.json?url=http%3A//vimeo.com/161822537 returned a 404 error.
Details: Not Found

The exhibition WHAT THE WEEKEND IS GALLERY is thematically created along the lines of different subgenres and styles of this young genre of art in a non-representative way. The work of all the artists presented in this group show can be found in public spaces, as well as in galleries. Other binding elements are their global citizenship and their generational experience. While all the artists shown at WHAT THE WEEKEND IS GALLERY. are Berlin-based, not all of them are German. Some artists originate from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, Japan and Canada, while others come from the Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Russia, Switzerland, Spain, Hungary, the USA and the UK. Apart from a few exceptions, all were born after 1980. The exhibition aims to display the richness of urban contemporary art in Berlin. Female artists will not be marginalized, but are in fact a vital part of the group show WHAT THE WEEKEND IS GALLERY.

About THE ART UNION

The non-profit association THE ART UNION is run by key players in the fields of art and culture with expertise in the communication of art, art funding and visual communication. Daily working practice has exemplified a gap between artists, their audience and the art market, which is difficult to overcome. THE ART UNION intends to build a bridge between these aspects and create formats to professionalize artists and initiate discourses within the scenes. The organization of exhibitions and participation in festivals are as much a vital part of the concept as are artist residencies, funding and exchange programmes.

THE ART UNION was founded in 2015 and will receive an entry in the National Register of Associations in the first half of 2016.
