ELVIS DEPRESSEDLY

Elvis Depressedly is the project of Mathew Lee Cothran and Delaney Mills. They live in the mountains of Western North Carolina and are inspired most by the misty smoke covered mountain that can be seen from the windows of their home, and their modest southern upbringings, steeped in superstition and old time religion. Years of self released bandcamp material eventually led to the companionship of the band with Run for Cover records, a record label in Boston, Massachussettes who helped release their first physical LP, “New Alhambra” which was met with positive reviews. In 2016 they re-released 2012 cult-favorite “Holo Pleasures” with it’s new BFF, a 6 song companion EP, “California Dreamin’”. Stylistically elvis depressedly could be described as pop realism, coy and unbothered, but with a nod to the impending darkness that awaits us all.

TV GIRL

On the surface, TV Girl is a sunny, throwback splash of ‘60s French pop and southern California soul. Yet, under that shiny veneer lays a dark heart, beating with sharp wit and cynical alienation, and the music is all the more alluring for it.
TV Girl was formed in 2010 by Brad Petering as an outlet to blend the love of Spector-esque girl-group pop with an emerging interest in hip-hop. Featuring shimmering vocals and sampled beats, the self-titled debut EP of the same year turned heads online immediately; the group’s lush vintage rhythms and timeless pop hooks were even making waves on the BBC. Soon after, Jason Wyman joined the band and they continued to release increasingly popular EPs and mixtapes between tours. In 2014, TV Girl unveiled their first full-length, the critically acclaimed French Exit.
The album keeps true to the TV Girl charm with a bevy of electronic samplings infused throughout light and airy guitars, whirring organs, and ethereal vocals. However, this record is not all summer nostalgia, and there are plenty of times where French Exit reads like disaffected fiction. The moody characters in these songs are fueled by revenge as often as love, underpinned by desperation and a deep yearning to connect.
Since its release in June of 2014, TV Girl’s debut album French Exit has become something of a cult classic. Dollar signs in their eyes, they have decided to re-release the long-sold-out album on vinyl and tour the US in January of 2017

Gringo Star

Gringo Star are insouciant explorers, tossing the paddles overboard and drifting on the currents of their lackadaisical curiosity across a rippling sonic ocean, out to the far edges of rock & roll. Shots pulsing from a vintage Leslie speaker, their guitars, keys and vocals create the psychoactive ingredients of their echo-slathered, doo-wop-indebted indie gems; psychedelic garage bangers, gritty R&B shuffles and spaghetti-western weirdness. Taking cues from Santo & Johnny, The Stooges, Ritchie Valens, Marc Bolan, Percy Faith, Sam Cooke, the men working on the chain gang—uh! ah!—they’re all here, their electric ghosts reaching across time, tapping Gringo Star on the shoulder like the crossroads devil to Robert Johnson, bestowing secrets, passing torches. If you know a little about brothers Nick and Peter Furgiueles’ roots, it all makes sense. “Our grandad started out in radio in the ’40s and ’50s in Columbus, Ga.,” Nick explains. “He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma—all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out.” Not to mention how Nick and Peter used to raid their parents’ record collections, cutting their teeth on the likes of Buddy Holly, The Animals and The Kinks. “Our favorite music comes from the ’50s,” Peter says, “and that music influenced all the ’60s bands we like.” The band has toured relentlessly across the U.S. and Europe building a diehard underground following while sharing bills with everyone from Cat Power and Feist to The Black Angels and Weezer, and also touring with Wavves, Best Coast, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Deadand fellow Atlantans The Black Lips.

Zombie Zombie (Etienne Jaumet/ Cosmic Neman) + Pharoah Chromium

ZOMBIE ZOMBIE is a French trio made up of Etienne Jaumet on analog synths, Cosmic Neman (who also plays with the band Herman Dune) and Doc Shonberg, both on drums and percussion.

Zombie Zombie go back to 2005 and their first album “A Land for Renegades”. In 2010 their album “Zombie Zombie plays John Carpenter”, which saw them solely tackle the works of film score composer John Carpenter in new and different ways was a big succes. This time round they’ve taken a different tack heading into the studio with Joakim on production duties for their third album proper, “Rituels d’un Nouveau Monde” (‘Rituals Of A New World’).

The crazyest news: In October 2103, Lady Gaga sampled the band and their cover of Sun-Ra’s “Rocket #9″ in her new song ‘Venus”!

“Best French Band” Vice

“Ghoulish Parisian psych-nouveau duo, coming to you from your darkest nightmares. Expect to wake up screaming, but for joy“. (NME)“Festival highlights include Zombie Zombie, a Parisian pairing who impress with their vintage synth-based krautrock rythms and high-energy hommage to the scores of low-budget horror films. John Carpenter-inspired synthesizer soundscapes mix with the no wave electroclash of Suicide.” The Independant

File under Krautrock, Can, Neu!, Suicide, Silver Apples…
