KRAKE is an annual Berlin based festival for challenging electronic music brought to you by Killekill. KRAKE means octopus and the festival is organised in a comparable way: reaching out to selected locations during one week presenting the best in electronic music, whatever style it is. We skip what’s not necessary and bring back the focus on what counts: artists who dare to step off the beaten track and kick your ass. A festival for music lovers.
We are thrilled to share with you a week of adventurous live sets, banging dj sets, thrilling body performances, sound, video and laser installations, a record label market, music production workshops and much, much more.

Come on down with us!

Yours, the Killekill and Krake Team

DAT POLITICS (sub rosa, chicks on speed) – live
5XL (magic power) – live
Huron (crazy language) – live
Subkutan (institut für Zukunft)
Axiom (crazy language)

We open our festival with a line up that is as wild and eclectic as the festival itself.
DAT POLITICS is by far one of the most interesting electric bands on the planet. They have given proof of this with their uncountable albums as well as with the remix for David Lynch lately. Most of all they are known for their hot-wired and partly chaotic live shows, which explain the cult-like enthusiasm that surrounds the french combo. 5XL is a collaboration of 5 young musicians, who are all involved in other successful musical projects and use this alias for live jams of unheard raw energy on meters of hardware machines. Expect some techno/electro madness coming from these young folks! HURON’s music is deeply rooted in classic Electronica and IDM. Gllitches, beautiful soundscapes, a strong melancholy feel and a subliminal dark touch are typical for his music. SUBKUTAN, one of the residents of Leipzig’s new techno institution Institut für Zukunft, and Crazy Language-boss AXIOM round the evening off with their dj sets.

Also we will open the art exhibition tonight, which will be open all week long.

In order to create a platform for Berlin’s vivid electronic music scene we contacted our favourite Berlin labels, record stores and agencies to set up this market, where you can browse their releases and merchandise for rarities and goodies. The market will be accompanied by dj sets, a panel on music rights management in modern times and a live performance by JULIA DROUHIN, who creates chocolate records with hits from dead musicians, which can be heard and eaten by the audience.

The art exhibition will be open all day long.

The Wednesday night at Berghain Kantine is a classic. This is where the whole KILLEKILL story started and this night has been part of every edition of the Krake Festival so far.
For this year, we are cooperating with BODIES, a Berlin collective with a strong focus on the physical part of this thing we call techno. They have curated a fine selection of extreme body performances for this night. On the musical side of things we present live sets of INNER8, one half of DADUB, whose solo album earlier this year was a mindblowing trip from dark electronica to techno, and KEN KARTER, who melts down harmonies, numbers and mathematical codes like no other.
Later in the night the Killekill djs will take over: ALIENATA, who has built up a solid reputation with her extraordinary selection of dark styles and her outstanding sensibility for the crowd, Killekill boss hog DJ FLUSH, who is known for his driving sets ranging from abstract to banging techno, from Chicago house to acid, and FIST VAN ODOR. His music is deeply rooted in funk and UK Bass music and his mixes have names like “I smear butter on your belly” or “eating a horse”. He is a freak and he’ll teach you how to be one, too.

On Friday, we kick off the Krake weekend! For this day we present some of the most challenging characters in contemporary electronic music. First to be mentioned here are CASSEGRAIN & TIN MAN, a cooperation between the Greek/British/Turkish/Asian duo Cassegrain and Tin Man from Vienna, who in their collabs have combined both their distinctive sounds — classic connoisseur acid and modern techno — to prove how fertile this combination can be. With outstanding releases on Killekill, Ostgut Ton as well as Function’s and Ed Davenport’s Infrastructure lately, the trio has made their way into fame, and we are glad to present one of their rare live shows.
ELECTRIC INDIGO is undoubtedly one of the most shining people in techno music for us. Leaving the fact, that she is one the first major player in techno for over 20 years aside, she is also an artist searching for new challenges and fields constantly, without ever leaning back and getting cosy in the comfortable couch of success. We are proud to present her cooperation with the Austrian visual artist THOMAS WAGENSOMMERER, a subtle piece exploring the possibilities of organic growth and change in electronic music.
MONDKOPF’s cooperation with a French visual artist, the video collective THE29NOV FILMS and many more will be on duty that night — indoor and outdoor.

The Saturday undoubtedly is the peak of the Krake Festival. Crossing over from subtle electronica and ambient to the freakiest shit in techno and electro, this night will be a fourdimensional blast filled with great music, outstanding visual art and everything that goes in between categories.

Come down and freak out with us!

Dance music is dead!
Well, this might be true after more than 20 years of history… But there are some people who still push the envelope, and some of them are here tonight. Enjoy!

GATTO FRITTO (international feel, fritto morto)
SKISM (wasn & wunderwaffel)
VERA MONA (berlin) – live

This floor will be hosted by the Neukölln-based Sameheads Berlin Berlin crew, a collective running an experimental fashion showroom, a music festival and a cafe-club. They will bring together long lost European disco tracks, pulsating contemporary electronic jams, and experimental live showcases.

Ekman (@Berceuse Heroique) — live
+ more tbc

On this floor we are going to present a line up of international artists, who know how to combine old school with new school, acid and electro with modern techno and prove that what used to be good, still is.

Robot Army – A Berlin collective which truly knows how to rock a floor. All former Tresor residents, these guys will bring their punk attitude and basement techno to our festival. We are proud to have them here. Put on your dancing shoes, but beware of serious dj skillz on this floor.

For this night, we will have our art exhibition featuring Robert Henke’s laser installation “Destructive Observation Field” and Sonic Robots’ “MR-808 Interactive” open all night long.
Additionally we will present some weirdo electronica here, which you will DEFINITELY not have heard of before.

Berlin Feminist Film Week 2015: The Silent Revolution: Women in Islam

On a fifth day of this year’s festival we will turn to Morocco and the documentary Casablanca Calling. Anti-islam is ever so present in the Western media and this program aims to increase the understanding for Arab women’s everyday life as well as highlight the relation between feminism and Islam.

Casablanca Calling is the story of a quiet social revolution in Morocco. In a country where over 60% of women have never been to school, a new generation of women have started work as official Muslim leaders. They are called Morchidats or spiritual guides.

We have invited Prof. Wendy Meryem Kural Shaw, in her lecture « How Change Happens: Visions of Feminism between Here and Elsewhere » she will tell us more about women’s rights in North Africa:

The global struggles for racial and gender equality emerging from French revolutionary thought developed within a modern context of colonialism which mapped hierarchies of East and West onto other regions. As a primary site of French colonial domination, North Africa became a site in which the struggle for national independence and that for women’s rights became deeply intertwined. Wendy Shaw will consider the state intervention engaged through the Mordichat program explored in this documentary film within the context of women’s rights in North Africa from the painting of Eugene Delacroix, Pablo Picasso, and Houria Niati; the analysis of Franz Fanon; and contemporary European equations between women’s rights and the veil.

Turkish writer Göksu Kunak has shared a text with us which will be distributed to all guests to interpret in silence.

Opening of SP38 Art Residency Exhibition « Post Vandal 2 »

Berlin-based street artist SP38 was invited by Urban Spree Galerie and Boddinale for a special gallery residency alongside the film festival (15-25.02.2018).

After 2 weeks of daily indoor work and street interventions in Friedrichshain, we invite the public to discover the outcome of the art residency over the upcoming weekend together with the artist.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, February 24th from 14:00 to 23:00 and will continue on Sunday February 25th from 12:00 to 23:00. Visitors will be able to acquire the original works on canvas and paper produced during the residency in addition to a selection of screen prints and stickers.

SP38 will also screen print “Post Vandal” tote bags live on Saturday!

Post Vandal 2“, explores the notion of vandalism at the age of post-graffiti.

A relentless urban wanderer and street typographer, SP38 (b.1960) uses different lo-fi techniques (collages, paste-ups, stickers, screenprints, paintings) to imprint his vision of the city and his letters to the walls. Involved at an early stage with the “Figuration Libre” movement in Paris and participant to the first graffiti and street art meeting in 1985 with Vive la Peinture, Speedy Graphito, Futura, Miss Tic, and Blek Le Rat, SP38 has navigated in different squat scenes (including the infamous Berlin’s Tacheles) before moving to Berlin in 1995.

A prime witness of the fast-paced gentrification of the metropolis, his art subtly reveals the fractures of the city through successive campaigns and catchy slogans (“Who kills Berlin?”, “Erased”, “Escape”, “Occupy”, “Vive la Bourgeoisie”, Vive la Crise”…), where the intimate, personal level often collides with the bigger scale.
