Xylouris White

After their sold out show last December in Berlin and a busy touring period worldwide, including their support acts for PJ Harvey’s Australian tour and festivals i.e. Big Ears Festival, Xylouris White return to Berlin for a unique performance at the Urban Spree Galerie.

Xylouris White brings together two masters of contemporary music: Jim White, a founder of the internationally acclaimed trio Dirty Three and Giorgos Xylouris (Psarogiorgis) the master lutenist who has been described as ‘the future of Cretan music’.

Xylouris is the descendant of Greek music royalty. His uncle is Nikos Xylouris, a national icon whose nickname is “archangel of Crete” because his songs are hugely influential and beloved, and his dad is Antonis Xylouris, a.k.a. Psarandonis, a singer and lyra player who is well-regarded for pushing traditional folk music in new directions.

White’s background, on the other hand, is decidedly post-punk; he co-founded the Dirty Three with Warren Ellis and Mick Turner in the early-’90s and went on to collaborate with Will Oldham, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, and many more. He’s a magnificent, multi-faceted, and sensitive drummer with the perfect mix of ferocity and finesse.

Together Xylouris White have created a new and compelling blend of melody and rhythm.

Jim and Psarogiorgis first played together in Melbourne. Since then they have been on a wonderful journey across three continents. Although these new experiences have added many riches neither has lost touch with the best of their diverse traditions.

All Your Sisters/ Ascetic:/ Philipp Strobel/ Luna Violenta

[aufnahme + wiedergabe] and Instruments of Discipline present:

All Your Sisters (USA)

“San Francisco duo All Your Sisters (Jordan Morrison/ /Mario Armando Ruiz) have one foot planted firmly in darkwave and post-punk, leaving the other free to wade through a variety of unconventional genres. The ease with which they shift between influences has yielded a sound that is both brooding and catchy. Their forthcoming album, Uncomfortable Skin is steeped in nostalgia, but entirely contemporary.” – Post-Punk.com

Ascetic: (AU/DE)

Ascetic is the post-punk project of Saxon Jörgensen, August Skipper and Andrew Jigalin from Melbourne, Australia, now located in Berlin, Germany. Second album ‘EVERYTHING IS BECOMING’ is the distillation of a slowly evolved sound stemming from the long writing collaboration between Jörgensen and Skipper, a carefully collated sonic vocabulary that along with the main instrumentation of guitar, bass, voice and electronic drums, includes found sounds, voice memos, field recordings, sampled synths and resampled guitars woven into the texture of the record, lyrics that embody a poetic restraint in exploring what it is to be human in a moment in history through both darkness and redemption.

Twoone: 100 Faces

After his residency at Urban Spree in July, Twoone is having a solo exhibition at Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne. 100 Faces presents 100 portraits on canvas made by the Japanese artist over the past 2 years, since he relocated to Berlin in 2014.

“It all started when I began to capture people that I saw or met in the streets, public transport, bars, and cafes in my little sketchbook’s, using color pencil, and with my Olympus PEN EE-3 and Olympus PEN Trip, analog camera’s given to me by my friends and family.
I officially commenced work on this project when I left Melbourne in 2014 to relocate to Berlin, Germany and before that I had an extended stopover with my family in Japan. During this time a studio space wasn’t available for me to be able to make my larger works so I started to make my small watercolor pieces, without any intention to make this the large series that it is now.
I arrived in Berlin in April 2014, where I started to travel much more than ever thanks to the offers of mural projects and exhibitions all over Europe and abroad.

I was painting subjects that I saw in newspapers and magazines and then I started to feel the need to collect / or find my own subjects because after a while I struggled to find enough thought provoking images in this material, and I had a sort of feeling that I needed to record images from my real life experiences.
My practice of capturing people in public, then translated from my A5 Sketchbook to larger watercolor paintings which started to become my everyday habit, as I visited many new places, and could meet new people passing by, it became one of the important ways for me to capture not just the person I was drawing but also to capture that time and atmosphere of each place that I visited.”

The exhibition opens on October 21st until October 30th in Melbourne.

Twoone is also releasing a limited edition book with the 100 portraits, designed by Timba Smits. The book is a companion to the Berlin 2014-2016 published by Urban Spree and available here.

Disparate elements including cymbals, voices, violins and bowed guitars pass through an analogue threshing machine that churns together roiling acousmatic noise, bludgeoning splinter-rhythms and fractious melodies, leaving senses nourished and obliterated in equal part.
Having been making music in various forms over the past five years, Mallett first unscrewed the jar on the tenebrous brew of noise he’d been fermenting in his attic with a pair of EPs on Howling Owl sister label, bulb. 2016 will witness the release of ‘EP3’ on Portal Editions/Howling Owl, and is Silver Waves’ high-water mark to date on which Dylan unconsciously evokes the gauzy junglist dysmorphia of another Westcountry deviant, Third Eye Foundation, albeit with an even more bruised and feedback-damaged take on amen break abandon that pounds like early Wolf Eyes while also betraying the kind of ear for detail that an HD soundsystem will no doubt reward.

Nicky Crane (Total Control) + Basic Mind + G.O.T.P. + Circular Ruins

Nicky Crane, the solo output of James Vinciguerra of Melbourne post punk band Total Contol, debuts his live show in Berlin on the back of the band’s European tour. James Vinciguerra’s previous works under his Nicky Crane moniker (released on noise label Future Archaic) are droned out and distorted ambient textures. His latest release on Rhythm Works sees his sound shift into the vein of early raw electro and techno.

Tim Loughman’s solo project Basic Mind flourishes in the domain of analog electronica. Echoing early house and acid techno, his raw modular sound is slow brooding with atmospheric textures, rich arpeggiations and resonating bass.

One half of Australian noise duo Girls Of The Pacific from the London based label Algebra Of Need. Expect live brash electronics and subversive rhythmic noise.

Cold waves and ambient soundscapes from Berlin based artist Marijn Degenaar, who you might recognise as the synth player from post punker’s Ill Winds (NotNotFun). Circular Ruins transports the listener to faraway ancient worlds. Soaring melodies atop marching synthesizer sequences and lush phasing drones meander through the still void.
