Pink Waves

After a great resonance in 2016 Urban Arts Berin cellebrates this year International Women’s Day with the excellent music festival PINK WAVES with an all female line-up at the legendary Urban Spree!

PINK WAVES is a plattform for a diverse range of female artistic expressions including the dark and noisey side of popular music. We promote sound art, avant-garde & experimental music, but also pagan & ritualistic tunes as well as industrial & noise sounds produced by women and/or music projects that bring women to the front.

For us is very important to de-construct the meaning of femeninity in traditional sense. This is why our program supports also women who hold a femenine-masculine approach. The PINK WAVES artists can be soft and quiet but also laud, irreverent and rebellious. We encourage those women who brake the clitche of femminity and to the ones that represent the noir side of polular music.

PINK WAVES is a plattform where strong and talented women flourish for who they are. Let’s make some noise!!

(Germany) – Electronic Noise

Founded in 2010 in Berlin by female artists Chris Dreier (ex Tödliche Doris) and Ursula Döbereiner the noise duo initially played under custom-made white or black burqas and filled various galleries and venues with their aggressive industrial-elektro sound, occasionally using automatons. The band refers to noise, ambient and new music structures adding rhytmic patterns and tape mash-ups to their modular space trips.

(Germany) – Body Analogue Electronics & Ritualistic Music

Cubop is one of the most talented avant-garde and ritualistic dark projects from Berlin. She has won a strong resonance in the fields of electro-acoustic and anolgue synthesis influenced by Delia Derbyshire, John Cage, Anne Gillis, COIL, Muslimgauze, SPK & Merzbow, among other interesting projects. Her works have being release by Lust Vessel (Japan), Hylé Tapes (Paris), Corpus Callosum (Leeds, UK) & the Urban Arts Berlin Label.

Her sonic focus are dream territories, dark tales, alchemical sound, sonic sculptures, filmic soundscapes, ritualistic music, dark ambient & noise. She often displays her proficiency at playing a variety of instruments such as the legendary MS20, the Dark Energy Doepfer, Bass and the Micro Brute. She has produced a large body of soundtrack work for radio, film and performance, and, as Cubop, as a solo artist in her own right.

At Pink Waves her new album « FLESH & DEMENTIA » will be presented live.

(Germany) – Experimental Vocalism

Fake Mistress started as a singer of the dada-performance group The Fake Masters, but is now performing mostly solo. The classical trained voice is her instrument to impersonate various shapes of characters and emotions and thus creating a highly atmospheric music, evoking fragments of films, emotions and stories fusing it to a kind of modern symphony.

The music she composes and performs live is a mixing of field-recordings, her own recordings of instruments and cut-ups of old classical orchestra music vinyls that have been processed, using Linux and open source programms only (Ardour).

MARTA ZAPPAROLI (Italy) – Analogue Imporvisation

Italian experimental sound artist, improviser, performer, researcher and musician. She works and lives in Berlin since 2007. Her music mainly consists in strongly narrative sonic pieces that she builds using a wide variety of recording techniques, devices and selfmade microphones . She is interested on the boundaries and relations between real sound world ,vibration sound, noise pollution and inaudible sound . Although it could be qualified as abstract, Zapparoli’s music reveal an accurate sense of nativity, she building strongly narrative and sonic pieces live through improvisation with real-time tape manipulation as scratch, back and forth, cutting, mixing producing rough sounds.

N01R (Spain) – New Wave

N01R is the echo of a moment, nostalgia embodied in music, video and photography, trying to capture all those feelings in sonic waves. The topic of the songs is usually about space in connection with the human being, and how we as a humans see ourselves in the universe.

« Everything is sound, and everything influences us. »

It’s like transmit the memory of something from the past or a dream, a vision of something beautiful and blurred.

VIY – (UK) – Dark Industial Techno

Viy is Vera Bremerton’s wilder techno-industrial side. Viy takes Vera’s experimental vocals and laces them with hard, fast, thundering beats and swathes of distorted synths. By means of stacked up layers of screams and noise, Viy seeks to achieve almost unbearable aural intensity. Cathartic, Dionysian, uncompromisingly feminine, her performances are an occasion for the audience to reconnect with their truer instincts. Viy was born and bred in Italy, and is now based in London, where she’s constantly on the prowl for new sounds to sample. Her first album “Amoris Vulnus” wants to denounce sexual violence by recreating the feeling of terror and anguish suffered by the survivors; she’s now working on an project dedicated to women’s affirmative sexuality.

What the Frau

‘We can’t all succeed if half of us are held back’
– Malala Yousafzai

Wunderfrauen is a new platform for female artists in Berlin. We love all kinds of artforms and want to celebrate other kick-ass women creating beautiful things.

Our first event, entitled ‘What the Frau,’ will be hosted by Urban Spree on the 25th of November. It will be a chance to celebrate the wildness and wonder of the fiercely creative females we find all around us. It will be a night of live music, DJs, visual arts, clothing and food.

The live bands, traversing genres from experimental pop to punk rock to soul, will play in the concert room. The basement will be transformed into a gallery and marketplace for the evening, and you’ll be warmed up with delicious vegan food.

Stay tuned as we announce the acts one by one over the coming weeks.

The running order for the night will be something like this:

6€ Entry

Doors at 19:00
Live Music til 12:00
DJ til 3:00
Gallery til 03:00

Artists and Musicians TBA

A little bit about The Wunderfrauen: we are four female musicians living and working in Berlin. Our identities must remain secret as our super powers might be exposed otherwise. You might catch us wearing silly masks and lycra trousers on the night.

And remember the wise words of Kathleen Hanna:

‘I will wear what I like, eat what I like, fuck who I like, and identify however I want’.

Until then, with love from The Wunderfrauen xx

Feminized presents: VESSEL + Q&A

Join us on December 2nd as Feminized will present the German premiere of documentary Vessel, a fascinating story about activist and doctor Rebecca Gompert’s organisation Women on Waves. As a doctor living by the sea, Gompert’s controversial response to the abortion laws around the world was take matters into her own hands, bypass national laws by providing abortions on a ship offshore. Despite setbacks, Gompert’s slightly unlikely idea developed into a global movement.
We have invited activists from Pro-Choice movements based in Berlin to join us for a chat about their work after the film.

Vessel – The Film

« Vessel begins with a young doctor who lived by the sea, and an unlikely idea. Rebecca Gomperts, horrified by the realities created by anti-abortion law around the world, felt compelled to challenge this. Her method: to provide abortions on a ship in offshore waters.
Her project, Women on Waves, begins as flawed spectacle, a media frenzy, faced with governmental, religious, and military blockades. But with each setback comes a more refined mission, until Rebecca has the revelation that she can use new technologies to bypass law – and train women to give themselves safe abortions using WHO-sanctioned protocols with pills.
We witness the creation of an underground network of emboldened, informed activists, working at the cutting edge of global reproductive rights, who trust women to handle abortion themselves. Vessel is Rebecca’s story: one of a woman who heard and answered a calling, and transformed a wildly improbable idea into a global movement. »

Urban Tropical with Silverio, Filastine & Nova, Alo Wala, Cairo Liberation Front, Sake Sake, DJ Copyflex, Dat Politics Djs

10325425_10152199705288460_6137687573597330580_n (1)

The hottest party of the month in Urban Spree on the 27th of June.

For those who doesn’t go to Fusion, Fusion comes to you!

Four global and tropical bass highlights of the festival – a crazy super star SILVERIO from Mexico, post dubstep audio-visual duo FILASTINE & NOVA (USA/Indonesia), magic raving ALO WALA from both Chicago and Copenhagen, sonic Arabic revolutionists CAIRO LIBERATION FRONT, one of the most popular party DJs in the world of tropical bass COPYFLEX and Berlin based singer SAKESAKE. Plus DJ set from DAT POLITICS in the garden. Come to shake your booty to sounds of hip-hop, moombathon, rasterinha, trap, kuduro, dancehall, cumbia and tropical madness!

In the Garden- Dat Politics Dj set !

A drunk, an elegant dandy, a womanizer and an icon at any club, he is a phenomenon in the Entertaiment industry unseen since the Elephant Man.
This electronic party music sounds like it came from the Stone Age with kick ass live shows that are a total blast when compared with the insipid and boring shows of the so called cool electronic music scene. The first production of His Majesty Silverio was released in 2001 and shook the Mexican Family with the extraordinary hit Yepa-Yepa-Yepa.
Onto the colder transatlantic audiences and Silverio’s mesmerising fusion of raw Mexican Machismo, brutal keyboard prowess and tantalising female companions scandalised and dumbfounded across Europe in The Migros Museum in Switzerland, London’ss I.C.A and Berlin’s Kunstwerke beside a smashing tour of clubs across Italy, Spain, Germany and Austria.
The man himself describes himself humbly as a lover of alcohol and women in no particular order, with a simple personality, though strong in convictions and a virtuoso on the dance floor. Some critics have described his music as electro-cheese while connoisseurs have said that if neanderthal man would have Nightclubs instead of wooden clubs then surely Silverio would been at the helm.

Grey Filastine composes a dense transnational bass music colliding the low frequency pressure of dubstep with high-level beat science, acoustic strings and voices, using percussion to fire off sounds and synchronised video from a heap of electronics wired to an amplified shopping cart, borrowing from hip-hop, moombathon, dubstep and cumbia while pulling in sounds from India, North Africa, Indonesia and other stops on his journeys to create complex, shifting canvases for Indonesian vocalist Nova to place her silken singing.

Alo Wala’s live show, is magic raving. You will find their american punjabi front woman Shivani in lavish geometric shapes and bright colors, flirting in front of euphoric live visuals and bouncing over colossal bass lines from the live band. Alo Wala’s hard-hitting and joyful mixture of bass, dancehall, cumbia, hip hop and kuduro is already taking audiences in India, Morocco and Europe by storm. Their forthcoming debut album on Enchufada label also features superstars of tropical bass like Schlachthofbronx, Jahdan Blakkamoore, MC Zulu and others.

Cairo Liberation Front are electro cha3bi pioneers. CLF promotes the sonic Arabic revolution. Electro cha3bi comes from the popular neighborhoods of Cairo. Producers use cracked software; combine American hip-hop, eurohouse and Arabic rhythms. Like Omar Souleyman meeting Sean Paul and Aphex Twin at a wedding party. It has the live power of punk rock shows and early house parties. On stage Cairo Liberation Front performs with one DJ, one MC and one hypeman (a colonel).  Join the revolution and say Yalla!

SAKESAKE is a Berlin based singer//songwriter//producer. In love with art she never stops raving.

Her tone is classic, delicate, beautiful…voiced to the sound of a brave new world she is seeking remedy for itґs poison.

Copyflex is one of the most popular dj´s in Copenhagen due to his capacity to combine party music with creative experiments and homemade edits and mashups. Although some of this popularity derives from his more-than-lively stage appearance. In addition to his solo performances, Copyflex is also a driving force behind projects like the digital vikingo crew Copia Doble Systema and the slow-rave styled duo called Copyfokking.
