Opale (FR)
———————-

In opal fields, you have to pierce through layers of rock to discover a gem. Opale’s first album, L’incandescent, holds a single direction throughout the 35 minute duration and is graciously supported with a band of cold and melancholic analog keyboards and soft, haunting voices. Nowhere to go and nothing to feel is the single story sung in English, French, and Spanish. Through cities of light and the waking of lost spirits, Opale will take you on a trip that may be your last.

Paris based Opale released their first EP under the name Playground on Stellar Kinematics in 2012. The album included a collaboration with Ensemble Economique’s Brian Pyle. Since then, Sophia Hamadi and Rocio Ortiz have recorded beautiful sounds within L’Incandescent and have toured throughout Europe, Canada and the USA.

Kælan Mikla (IS)

Kælan Mikla is a three-piece punk/no-wave band from Reykjavík slowly getting darker and deeper with new waves and more instruments. The band consists of three girls who perform their own poetry and have been described as an avant-garde, fresh breeze into the Icelandic music scene in the past two years. The band was formed after winning first place in a poetry slam held by the city library in January 2013. They have since then played multiple festivals as well as touring
Europe. Kælan Mikla are known for their dark melancholic sound, most of the songs consisting only of heavy bass, drums and screams with some softer, melodic synth parts in-between. The band lyrics focus on inner confusion and their intimidating stage performance, often including performance art of some sort, is bound to leave the crowd in a melancholic trance.

“This trio has moved from being a post-punk outfit of bass, drums and vocals into bold new territory. Chilling, neurotic synth loops paired with ass-end bass and some positively haunting vocals, their sound has evolved into something darker, stronger, capable of taking us from the everyday world into the gauzy barrier between us and our nightmares. Like watching a forgotten reel of film shot at a haunted house, you come away from seeing them live wondering if it’s really over, as you can still feel icy fingers reaching towards you. »

Maya Postepski never stops. An active member of the Toronto music scene, she has been making music for over 10 years, currently as part of electronic group Austra (Paper Bag Records / Domino). She is a prolific remix artist, DJ and she co-wrote and produced TRST with Robert Alfons as Trust (Arts & Crafts).
This project is the outlet for her genre-crossing experiments that take us on a journey through minimalist cosmic disco psychedelia, crossing through glacial poly-rhythmic territories soaked in dark dripping goo.

Shooting stars and icicles glimmering weave a reflective thread through each track while mechanical pulses ground soaring delicious keyboards that could melt the heart of a cobra.

Do not be afraid! Close your eyes and allow the warm synthesizer liquid to seep through your veins and take you into a far away galaxy of love, lust and passion.

HERZSCHLAG: Das Ding (NL), Afghan Dance (DE), The Hollow Man (DE) + Herzschlag 1 year anniversary

10830540_1091536167529126_1663521370043498423_o   01.05.2015 HERZSCHLAG: Live: Das Ding (NL) Das Ding is Danny Bosten, who was active in the early 1980s releasing his music and friends music via his own cassette label called Tear Apart Tapes. While studying graphic design in art school, he designed all the tape covers himself. Meanwhile, he recorded his own music as Das Ding. Powerful dark electro, some tracks are quite addictive and danceable while others are more for at home listening enjoyment. At the time, it seemed that everyone was making music, or noises of some sort. This scene seemed to warrant the establishment of a full-blown cassette-label, and so Bosten, together with Johan de Koeyer, who was operating as ‘Les Yeux Interdits’, set up ‘Tear Apart Tapes’. Their first release was a split C-20 cassette featuring ‘Das Ding’ and ‘Les Yeux Interdits’. In 2007, 433rpm, of the exhaustive music blog ‘No Longer Forgotten Music’, posted some of his old Das Ding tapes, and Veronica Vasicka- who runs the New York based ‘Minimal Wave’ label and specializes in reissues of 80s synth-wave- contacted Danny, now living in Rotterdam, to propose the release of a Das Ding album. Old tapes were uncovered, and Minimal Wave released a remastered version of ‘HSTA’ and other tracks, in 2010. A wave of renewed interest followed the record’s release and soon people were in touch to propose live shows. Twenty years later, and after some deliberation, Das Ding was reincarnated under its old moniker but now with a revised line-up and a working set-up that reflected inevitable technological change. Suddenly, Das Ding was a ‘Dutch electro-pioneer’ and the apparent pinnacle of ‘Minimal Wave’. Afghan Dance (DE) www.afghandance.bandcamp.com/releases Like an abrasive perception, Afghan dance blend low-frequencies, acid drum machines and a beating bass guitar to create his obscure-enveloping sound. It’s the project of the Berlin based Alessandro Nieri (SATO SATO / ex M!R!M), joined by Jaakko Saarilahti at the synthesisers and machines. He released the first single ‘’Eyes’’ at the end of 2014, followed by ‘’Sea shepherd’’ and a handful of shows in Germany. The Hollow Man (DE) Regressive Electronika www.thehollowman.net https://soundcloud.com/thehollowman The instrumental music of «The Hollow Man» is a mixture of dark atmospheric soundtracks, bittersweet melodies and mean unexpected musical ambushes. Over the years he played live shows with acts like «Venetian Snares», «The Young Gods» and «Sole & The Skyrider Band», recorded several solo-albums, worked with many other artists and did some remix work as well as soundtracks for short movies. After a long break he will be releasing his new and final album «Walking Ghost Phase» at the end of May 2015. At the «Herzschlag»-Event he will present a collection of songs from his 2009 album «Mabuse» as well as some tracks from his new album, played live for the first time. DJs: Jaakko Hanzel Anaesthesija + Guest DJ Pre OpTrans +++ Herzschlag 1 year anniversary +++ First Herzschlag party was held in The Chelsea Bar 29.05.2014 and till so far we had 11 partys in different locations. Live:

DIE SELEKTION (DE)

“The new innocence”, DIE SELEKTION’s self description, is the first of many enthralling contradictions raised by the young band. Fast beats, cutting bass lines, bleak and subcooled synth layers, and then – the most unusual instrument for this genre: The trumpet. The plain brilliancy of how this works out leads to one question only: Why has no one done this before?

ALLES (PL)

We live in the kingdom of noise, information overflow, misinformation & disorientation.
Ever rushing, we grasp disconnected words, unfinished thoughts, repeated ideas.
We consume relationships, sandwiches, art.
We want freedom but don’t know how to be free.
We close up in the world of definition, scheme, calculation and manipulation.
Post-modernism, post-punk, post-communism, great post.
Overload’s overload, tiredness of being tired.

QUAL (UK / William Maybelline / Lebanon Hanover solo project, exclusive first Berlin show)

Vile visions, despaired in a frowning black tower of pain. Concealed yearns of a desolate heart, trying to scratch that unscratchable rotting itch from within. Centuries of sorrow drenched in gloomy electronics that palpitate like human passions.

77TM (PL / DK)

Arising from the underground of Neukölln in Berlin, the Polish-Danish duo 77™ is bringing their pulsating beats and bass lines together with vintage synthesizers and analog drum machines, as well as customized low-bit machines.

MONOWELT (DE)

DJs Hanzel, Jaakko, Anaesthesija

+ guest DJs Riikka (Zone-Grau), Luca Gillian( Die Selektion), Hayden Payne (Dream Affair, CEREMONIES (Club Night),Fleisch)

Herzschlag is a new event in Berlin nightlife bringing the finest selections of Cold Wave, Post-Punk, Minimal Synth, Old School EBM, Underground Electronic.

Mecanica label started 12 years ago as a record store in Mexico but the idea for a label was born last year somewhere between Mexico City and Los Angeles. Their first step was release for Americ some european bands like Lebanon Hanover and Selofan. Later on, Tying Tiffany joined with an EP and Soft Metals with a great remix album with works from some friends like Bestial Mouths, L-Sedition, Silent Servant, Jesse Ruins and Tying Tiffany too. Now, Mecanica is moving forward with two new promising acts, 77tm and Alles, and more projects to come…

In der Fremde / Pictures from Home — Photobook Launch Event

Urban Spree and Hatje Cantz invite you to the indoor/outdoor photobook launch of Romeo Alaeff’s, “In der Fremde: Pictures from Home,” published by the esteemed German arthouse publisher, Hatje Cantz.

Romeo Alaeff is a Berlin-based artist from Brooklyn, NY. After moving to Berlin eight years ago, he began a long-term photographic series about migration, belonging, and the universal search for home. Through haunting, cinematic images of Berlin, he charts a new city topography in the context of a complex family history spanning from Yemen to USSR, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Israel/Palestine, and the United States.

The photobook « In der Fremde: Pictures from Home » is composed of eerie nightscapes and Kiezszene in familiar Berlin neighborhoods, but, as the oxymoronic title suggests, strangeness and unfamiliarity lurk in the shadows.

The nocturnal photographs are framed by inspiring essays from Romeo Alaeff, Yuval Noah Harari, Eva Hoffman, Joseph Kertes, Rory MacLean, Christian Rattemeyer, and Charles Simic.

The artist will present his new photobook at Urban Spree, which will unveil an outdoor exhibition consisting of three mural-size photographs (300 x 200 cm) and a series of medium format photos disseminated throughout the garden. The photographer will sign his book and engage with the audience in partnership with the publisher.

The exhibition will be on display in the garden until January 23, 2021.

From amniotic fluids to saliva, blood, oceans, and rain, liquids bring both life and death: they are essential to human life but also hold the power of submerging, swamping, and drowning. Liquids have a definite volume but no fixed shape; they pass around borders and flow with extraordinary lightness and mobility.

In the 1990s, sociologist Zygmunt Bauman coined the expression “liquid modernity” to define postmodern societies’ shift towards liberalization and individualism. In his terms, constant change and unstable socio-political structures created a chaotic, fluid fragmented world in which individuals flow from one position to another.

Today, ‘liquidity’ seems to be more than ever an integral part of human existence. Societies are increasingly ruled by temporariness and fragility, constantly urging us to change and adapt to mundane precarity, while underwater cables power our Internet cloud and global warming melts glaciers and floods our cities.

Taking stock of these conditions, Teorema’s 2020 edition invites participants and visitors to explore ideas of liquidity and fluidity as openly and creatively as possible.

Let’s get together to imagine bridges over our liquified present.
