Pink Waves

After a great resonance in 2016 Urban Arts Berin cellebrates this year International Women’s Day with the excellent music festival PINK WAVES with an all female line-up at the legendary Urban Spree!

PINK WAVES is a plattform for a diverse range of female artistic expressions including the dark and noisey side of popular music. We promote sound art, avant-garde & experimental music, but also pagan & ritualistic tunes as well as industrial & noise sounds produced by women and/or music projects that bring women to the front.

For us is very important to de-construct the meaning of femeninity in traditional sense. This is why our program supports also women who hold a femenine-masculine approach. The PINK WAVES artists can be soft and quiet but also laud, irreverent and rebellious. We encourage those women who brake the clitche of femminity and to the ones that represent the noir side of polular music.

PINK WAVES is a plattform where strong and talented women flourish for who they are. Let’s make some noise!!

LINE UP:

BURKAMACHINES

(Germany) – Electronic Noise

Founded in 2010 in Berlin by female artists Chris Dreier (ex Tödliche Doris) and Ursula Döbereiner the noise duo initially played under custom-made white or black burqas and filled various galleries and venues with their aggressive industrial-elektro sound, occasionally using automatons. The band refers to noise, ambient and new music structures adding rhytmic patterns and tape mash-ups to their modular space trips.

CUBOP

(Germany) – Body Analogue Electronics & Ritualistic Music

Cubop is one of the most talented avant-garde and ritualistic dark projects from Berlin. She has won a strong resonance in the fields of electro-acoustic and anolgue synthesis influenced by Delia Derbyshire, John Cage, Anne Gillis, COIL, Muslimgauze, SPK & Merzbow, among other interesting projects. Her works have being release by Lust Vessel (Japan), Hylé Tapes (Paris), Corpus Callosum (Leeds, UK) & the Urban Arts Berlin Label.

Her sonic focus are dream territories, dark tales, alchemical sound, sonic sculptures, filmic soundscapes, ritualistic music, dark ambient & noise. She often displays her proficiency at playing a variety of instruments such as the legendary MS20, the Dark Energy Doepfer, Bass and the Micro Brute. She has produced a large body of soundtrack work for radio, film and performance, and, as Cubop, as a solo artist in her own right.

At Pink Waves her new album “FLESH & DEMENTIA” will be presented live.

FAKE MISTRESS

(Germany) – Experimental Vocalism

Fake Mistress started as a singer of the dada-performance group The Fake Masters, but is now performing mostly solo. The classical trained voice is her instrument to impersonate various shapes of characters and emotions and thus creating a highly atmospheric music, evoking fragments of films, emotions and stories fusing it to a kind of modern symphony.

The music she composes and performs live is a mixing of field-recordings, her own recordings of instruments and cut-ups of old classical orchestra music vinyls that have been processed, using Linux and open source programms only (Ardour).

MARTA ZAPPAROLI (Italy) – Analogue Imporvisation

Italian experimental sound artist, improviser, performer, researcher and musician. She works and lives in Berlin since 2007. Her music mainly consists in strongly narrative sonic pieces that she builds using a wide variety of recording techniques, devices and selfmade microphones . She is interested on the boundaries and relations between real sound world ,vibration sound, noise pollution and inaudible sound . Although it could be qualified as abstract, Zapparoli’s music reveal an accurate sense of nativity, she building strongly narrative and sonic pieces live through improvisation with real-time tape manipulation as scratch, back and forth, cutting, mixing producing rough sounds.

N01R (Spain) – New Wave

N01R is the echo of a moment, nostalgia embodied in music, video and photography, trying to capture all those feelings in sonic waves. The topic of the songs is usually about space in connection with the human being, and how we as a humans see ourselves in the universe.

“Everything is sound, and everything influences us.”

It’s like transmit the memory of something from the past or a dream, a vision of something beautiful and blurred.

VIY – (UK) – Dark Industial Techno

Viy is Vera Bremerton’s wilder techno-industrial side. Viy takes Vera’s experimental vocals and laces them with hard, fast, thundering beats and swathes of distorted synths. By means of stacked up layers of screams and noise, Viy seeks to achieve almost unbearable aural intensity. Cathartic, Dionysian, uncompromisingly feminine, her performances are an occasion for the audience to reconnect with their truer instincts. Viy was born and bred in Italy, and is now based in London, where she’s constantly on the prowl for new sounds to sample. Her first album “Amoris Vulnus” wants to denounce sexual violence by recreating the feeling of terror and anguish suffered by the survivors; she’s now working on an project dedicated to women’s affirmative sexuality.

EAV@Urban Spree / CTM Vorspiel Dark Music Night

EAV@Urban Spree

Music Event part of the Transmediale / CTM Vorspiel program

INNER RHYTHM / DARK MUSIC NIGHT

Come down in Urban Spree’s basement for a night focusing on dark aesthetics & sounds with an ethereal folk concert, a cello noise sound performance and a party with three djs playing 80’s dark music, Post Punk, EBM, Acid House, Electro & Techno.

VENA WARD (Berlin) – Ethereal folk concert

BYRON REZA AFSHAR (BRU/T – Berlin) – Cello Noise Perfo

DANIELE COSMO (Lux Rec – Zurich) – Electro / Acid House / Techno

AV SKARDI (BRU/T – Berlin) – 80’s / EBM / Techno

COBEIA (EAV / Inner Rhythm – Geneva / Berlin) – No Wave/Post Punk / Chicago / Acid / Ghetto House / Bass / Techno

In resonance with CTM’s New Geographies thematic, we have invited for this Vorspiel program, artists, musicians & djs that share a link with the multi-cultural cities that are Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland.

With this event we want to point out a little fraction of what comes out of such melting pot and will continue in the future to highlight the long existing link between artists, cultural activists, musicians and djs from Switzerland and their counterparts in Berlin. Very rich and varied in its cultural outputs, we have chosen for this night to focus on a program looking at a spectre of dark aesthetics and sounds taking advantage of Urban Spree’s grim and sombre two rooms basement.

EAV is a 10 year old music project in Geneva putting on diverse kinds of quality electronic and non electronic musics. It’s curator and organizer Cobeia, has been deeply involved in the Geneva underground music & cultural scenes since 15 years. He’s living again in Berlin since 4 years after several long stays and visits to the city since 1999 and is now working as a DJ and promoter here as well.

VENA WARD (Berlin)

An enigmatic persona, musician and songwriter, indulging herself into litterature, poetry and films, she lives in Berlin since 2012, after having grown up in Geneva and lived in London. Playing on this night with a second guitarist, Vena Ward explores ethereal and meditative soundscapes through repetitive reversed guitar layers inhabited with haunted vocals.

BYRON REZA AFSHAR / AV SKARDI (BRU/T – Berlin)

Byron Reza Afshar was born In the States, raised in Geneva and lives in Berlin since 2009. His practice incorporates diverse interests and activities in the fields of language & linguistics, photography and fine art. Through a sensitivity to concepts and aesthetics paired with his uncompromisingly critical personality, Afshar’s musical compositions take on the form of a response to contemporary conditions of consumerist homogeneity. Drone driven, passionately minimalist and with a keen historical awareness of modern and experimental music forms, Byron Afshar channels these various stimuli into his sound performances and techno. Characteristics of his musical productions include multiple repetitions, the use of electronic cello, 4/4, hi-hats, reverbs, echo, and delays. An aesthetics of obsession comes to color his sonic practice, translating into DJ sets that favor acceleration: high speeds that maintain intensity without dealing violence. EBM, techno (deep, acid, contemporary as well as old-school), house, new beat, and rave are registers he moves through and between, juggling what has preceded him with an awareness of today’s current approaches. In the past two years he has curated the monthly Thursday night BRU/T techno party at Schwuz.

DYS FEST

1965574_797980690316016_6743425615339117368_o

DYS 2015 festival

A Project Organized, Produced and Curated by
CORPO 6 art project space & Unknown Pleasures Factory.

DYS, that stands for Dionysus – the mediterranean deity of nature and ecstasy -, is a festival that through a multimedia approach – live music sets, performances, video installations, screenings – wants to activate a powerful and über expressive “ambiance”, focusing on the dionysiac efflorescent of the art form. Taken in its antinomic dynamic: organic- non organic; analog – digital; low fi – hi fi; performance – installation; informal – formal.

Its second underlying code of functioning, and thematic reference, is the vanguard creativeness represented by the cultural city hubs, along the decades in the past century: Rome in the fifties; New York in the seventies; Berlin in the eighties and so on.

Creating an alive discourse of interacting links between researches, codes and effectiveness along the time line of the global cultural resistance against desertification and cultural homologation.

The artists have been chosen for their work round the “limen” – the extreme edginess – of their research. In term of the research of the internal dynamic within their medium, the questioning of the mainstream cultural logic, the “physicality/liability” of genders involved. Describing a polisemantic and outrageous celebration of existence.

A dionysian hymn to unity and self empowerment.

VV & The Void (Berlin/LA/Melbourne)
VV & the Void is a music project by Valentina Veil, a musician, producer artist and curator living between Berlin, LA and Melbourne.
The choice of the name plays on the repetition of the letter V and the logo stands for a visual vortex/spiral of void, a primal force or destructive energy or a triangle, ambiguous symbol of Holy trinity and occult summoning figure. VV’s lyrics often refer to occult and mysticism and unknown forces and energies.
The colors Gold and Black represent much of VV&V’s work often on stage.
Going back to the ancient Egyptians, Mayans, Aztecs, the color Gold symbolizes spiritual illumination, wisdom, beauty, splendor, awareness, alchemy; the opposite of black, expression of mysterious, veiled, esoteric, destructive, abyssal forces..
Her music, often described as shoegaze, drone, noir, atmospheric, goth, neo-psychedelic, experimental is a celebration of opposites energies: grace and disproportion, feminine and masculine, moon and sun, birth and death, angel and devil, light and dark, conscious and unconscious.

L.A.Drones! (Spain/LA)
L.A.DRONES! is a sonic experiment that, without abandoning strong electronic rhythm, joins styles such as Electro, KrautRock, Dub, Acid, Space, Noise, never forgetting melody, through the interaction of loops and drones, with the manipulation of these playing live, and effects being squeezed to the extreme. Voices, two synthetizers, effects modules, plus pedals and two mixers combine in order to generate a unique experience, with improvisation as an essential part of the performance”.

Valentina is a painter. “True perfection does not exist, the sense of beauty comes from imperfection.” In the attainment of perfection, there is always the need for some elements of ugliness and of madness. When the ugliness is there, it is often overlooked, either intentionally or unintentionally, but perhaps when it is overlooked, true perfection is obtained.
