Andy and Edwin Mathis White are the duo known as Tonstartssbandht. Behind their made-up name (pronounced as tahn-starts-bandit) is almost a decade of sibling synergistic creative energy. The band began in August of 2007 in their hometown of Orlando, Florida. After spending their teenage years exploring the free landscape of improvised ensemble noise rock, they decided to focus their efforts on recording a few cover versions of songs from the Beach Boys’ Smiley Smile / Wild Honey. Trained as choristers in their youth, the two felt no apprehension at the vocal task at hand. Having never worked together as a duo, expectations were neutral, yet with only a few songs completed their natural cohesion lead the covers project to begin shifting toward creating originals. By the end of the month Andy and Edwin moved away to their new respective homes in Montreal and New York City.

In these two cities the band continued under the restraint of solo writing, recording, and emailed collaboration. The confined living environments necessitated a reliance on the power of choral vocal loops, sampled rhythms, and digital music media. This method of songwriting and performance was carried through on three of their self-released 2009 albums An When, Dick Nights, and Maihama. Among these albums were also glimpses of their rock inspired past, with songs like “Midnite Cobras”, “Haughty Deb” and “Welsh Souper” revealing a perhaps unexpected side of doom and blues riff affinity. In the fall of that same year, the brothers began performing frequently, mostly around the lofts and venues of Montreal. At their shows they strived to display both sides of the band’s developing sound. Sometimes sets would begin with a few chaotic vocal looping tracks before jumping in to a raucous guitar and drum segment. Playing so often, they would also perform “electronic sets” and “rock sets” within the same week. Local label Psychic Handshake shared their rock side with the Midnite Cobras 7 inch in March 2010. One year later, Arbutus Records, which formed in late 2009 alongside the band’s live development, released their first full length 12 inch Now I Am Become, with music returning to a mix of dooming rock and choral harmony.

New Album « Sorcerer » out on 14.03.2017 on Mexican Summer

Dia de los Muertos

DIA de los MUERTOS and TACOS!!

We will have a very Mexican special night with TACOS all the night by Viva Zapata!

Welcome all Mexican skulls faces and terrific people!!

-History-

More than 500 years ago, when the Spanish landed in what is now central Mexico, they encountered natives practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death.

It was a ritual the indigenous people had been practicing at least 3,000 years.

A ritual known today as Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

In Mexico, people visit the cemetery where their loved ones are buried. They decorate gravesites with marigold flowers and candles. They bring toys for dead children and bottles of tequila to adults. They sit on picnic blankets next to gravesites and eat the favorite food of their loved people that is in the other dimension!

Music
glam rock l 80s l pop 80s l 70s l high energy and more!

Doomsquad

Dawn of the Dance & GreyZone Concerts & Promotion are happy to present:

DOOMSQUAD
Having formed in 2010 siblings Trevor, Jaclyn, and Allie Blumas soon began to explore trance and electronic beat making. Their shared fascination with dance culture, rhythm, and the unknown, along with their lifelong immersion in the arts, began to manifest as a collective ethos. Before long, DOOMSQUAD had mushroomed into a full-scale art project.

Inspired by some of their favourite artists — Georges Bataille, Richard Tuttle, Tanya Tagaq, and Genesis P-Orridge — DOOMSQUAD travelled to the New Mexican desert to write and record Total Time, creating dark, pulsating beats interspersed with hypnotic, incantatory jams. The album opens with the enticing dance of ‘Who Owns Noon in Sandusky,’ which was written to inspire the nakedness in us all, a song to wake up our inner clocks and reclaim our circadian time. ‘Solar Ass’ was written as a love song to a donkey, a song for paying respect to the smaller, under-appreciated elements that carry us through our contemporary lives. The songs on Total Time are meant to lead you through a genderless experience of transition to owning time, losing time, and becoming timeless, while providing a platform for you to dance through your consciousness.

Upon returning home from New Mexico, the band continued to draw inspiration from the Toronto arts community, which is vast but also extremely supportive and close-knit. Their friendships and connections led to some fortuitous collaborations, including one with Canadian avant-garde legend, Mary Margaret O’Hara, whose otherworldly vocals grace ‘The Very Large Array.’ The driving, dirty bass lines, and analogue layers of effects come care of Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck), who produced and mixed the album.

The record features a number of other contributors: Mike Haliechuk of Fucked Up plays guitar. Industrial noise experimenter David Foster aka HUREN offers vocals on ‘Russian Gaze.’ Colin Fisher and Brandon Valdivia of free-jazz duo Not the Wind, Not the Flag bring instrumentals. And galactic twins Josh and Jesse Hasko, who perform as North America, are a crucial part of Total Time as well. Over the years, the connection between DOOMSQUAD and the twins has deepened and this summer they’re joining forces: the Haskos are becoming members of DOOMSQUAD’s live act, which will take it further than it’s ever gone before.
