11th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE & FESTIVAL ON CONTEMPORARY CHARACTER DESIGN AND ART The world’s leading and largest Conference and Festival of contemporary character culture is back in Berlin, with a dense program of inspiring artist presentations, conference lectures, animation screenings, workshops, installations, selected accompanying exhibitions, performances and of course, loads of character! The diverse line-up of participating artists covers a wide range of media and disciplines, such as illustration, game design, installation, urban and fine art, offering the chance to learn from some of today’s most innovative and influential artists and illustrators, cutting-edge graphic, toy, game or fashion designers and leading animation filmmakers. The Pictoplasma Academy Group Show at Urban Spree presents paintings, installations, drawings, sculptures, limited edition prints and exciting new character worlds by the 27 international upcoming talents of its annual master class.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY: Since 2013 Pictoplasma brings the experience, knowledge and expertise of its conferences and festivals to a new level of inspiration and intensity, allowing selected international students to refine their personal projects and ideas in a 8-day master class under the close guidance of tutors and teachers such as Rilla Alexander, Nathan Jurevicius, Mehdi Hercberg, Philip Hunt, Benjamin van Oost, and Matt Jones.
The event will also feature the limited edition all-sticker mag release party crafted by the Academy Alumni together with Dresden-based Klebstoff Magazine

Animal, mineral or vegetable, this exhibition celebrates characters of all sorts from astronauts via shapeshifters to sadness personified. 36 artists from over 20 countries come together in this show presenting a variety of works – installation, sculptures, drawings, prints or films. Each artist is bringing a character developed during the six months since the Pictoplasma Academy Master Class in Autumn 2015. In addition to their personal projects the group have been working together as a collective, “DasGhost” – a collaboration which has to date spawned a sticker book and a memory game of characters, both of which are available in the shop alongside a range of delicious art, from prints to bags to comics.The show is open everyday from 12 – 8pm, wed 4th till Sun 8th May.
April 30 – May 4 2014, the Pictoplasma Conference on Contemporary Character Design and Art celebrates its 10 year anniversary, with a specially immersive program of more than 20 awe-inducing artist presentations and back-to-back conference lectures, 100+ freshly hatched animations illuminating the big screen, numerous hands-on workshops, endless fun, immeasurable inspiration and loads of confetti.
Meet the avantgard of today’s image creation, mingle with like-minded spirits and dive head-on into an insightful and inspiring week full of exhibitions, creativity, knowledge, networking, and – of course – a big birthday party at Urban Spree!
More specifically and for the first time in Friedrichshain, Urban Spree will be part of the Character Walk and host the premiere of the Pictoplasma Academy group show, introducing fresh, upcoming and surprising work by the forty international talents that have participated in Pictoplasma’s first annual master-class.
In 2013 Pictoplasma brought the experience, knowledge and expertise of its conferences and festivals to a new level of inspiration and intensity: The first Pictoplasma Academy allowed 40 selected students from 20 countries to refine their personal projects and ideas in a 8-day master class under the close guidance of tutors and teachers such as Rilla Alexander, Nathan Jurevicius, Gary Baseman, Philip Hunt, Benjamin van Oost and Mark Gmehling.
For the past 10 years, Pictoplasma has tirelessly hosted and pushed forward a unique, playful and interdisciplinary investigation of the graphic arts in the digital age. To celebrate the 10th anniversary edition, the Festival awaits with the Pictoplasma Portrait Gallery at Kaufhaus Jandorf, an exhibition showcasing new works by the 100 artists who have most influenced the festival over the past decade. The Character Walk invites you to a tour of 15+ exhibitions by emerging and established artists, most of them premiering in Germany.

In addition, Austrian street artist Nychos will paint the Urban Spree Artist Wall with one of his dissected, cartoon-inspired character-based murals.
And last but not the least, on Saturday night all culminates in the inevitable Big Birthday Bash Party at Urban Spree with live concerts by Gangpol & Mit’s brand new DJ/VJ project “Radio Minus Senior Sound System” and Big Butter (Tim Biskup‘s own band).
