“Very Necessary”, a solo show by Berlin-based artist Kid Cash

Urban Spree Galerie is proud to introduce the new body of works by the Berlin-based visual artist Christian August alias KID CASH, one of the most active post-graffiti artists of his generation.

The exhibition, entitled VERY NECESSARY, crystallizes his artistic direction of the last three years and  displays a brand new corpus of works which will be on display at Urban Spree Galerie for the first time.

The title of the exhibition refers to his primary work in the public space and hints to the necessity for him of showing his artworks in the context of a gallery space.

In the middle of the 1990s, KID CASH started graffiti and to paint on public walls and to analyze surfaces, urban landscapes and architecture. The enthusiasm thereof still inspires his work. The departure point for his imagery are often spontaneous sketches and photographs that result from everyday situations and emotions. The sources of these are very diverse and range from landscapes and still life to letters and quotes from artworks of Picasso, Henri Matisse or Hans Arp. In his artworks, KID CASH transfers something felt into a poetic visibility.

From line to area, from shape to shape, from shape to line – the action of the body and the dynamics of his body movements play a major role in the compositions of KID CASH’s large-scale artworks which require total commitment and physical strength. The graffiti letters of the 1970s in New York and the German post-reunification subcultures in the 1990s still make an observable impact on his artistic vocabulary. Also, his name derives from common names as KID and CASH within the subculture.

The choice of materials stems from those which enable KID CASH to work quickly and spontaneously and facilitate his intuitive and energetic modus operandi as acrylic and spray paint, construction materials, wood and canvases. The depicted visual language is dominated by seriality, an important element in KID CASH’s narrative.

About the artist:

Christian August alias KID CASH, born in 1977 in Halle (Saale), Germany, graduated at Burg Giebichenstein University of Fine Arts in Halle as a student in the class of Gerhard Schwarz. Since 1994, KID CASH has been painting on walls and canvases. He is also a founding member of the KLUB7 artist collective which is active since 1998. In 2017, the Art Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt grants him a scholarship. He lives and works in Berlin.

Pablo Tomek new solo show “Thank You Boss”

Urban Spree Galerie announces the first german solo show of Paris-based post-graffiti artist Pablo Tomek, opening on Saturday 18.02.2017 at 18:30 after a full 2-week Berlin residency at Urban Spree.

As part of its Art Residency Program, Urban Spree Galerie has invited the Paris-based artist Pablo Tomek in February 2017 to invest its Berlin space for 2 weeks to create large-format artworks in situ, a couple of months after his participation to the Palais de Tokyo’s Lasco Project where he created a 500sqm outdoor mural.

For Tomek, the construction and building sites scattering the city are endless sources of materials and plastic inspiration, whereby the relationship between building and demolition seems like a paradigm of the modern world, an aesthetics prone to détournements and dérives.

The materials flow in, the materials come into confrontation, the colours are damaged, the accidents shape, and things are born.

 

FEBRUARY IN URBAN SPREE

The exhibition “Thank You Boss” is a homage to the unknown and undetected aesthetics and “paintings” of construction workers, to the graffiti artists who ransack palisades, to the glass cleaners, to the roadside accidents that reshape the space, to the posters paste-ups, and time, that pulls them away.
Tomek’s first published monograph, “Teren Alchemia“, published by Classic Paris in January 2017, will be on display in the Urban Spree shop.

 

About the artist:

 

The art of Pablo Tomek (b. 1988 in Paris) originates in graffiti for which he has developed a rough experimental approach, which is further refined in his studio practice. Tomek studies the relationships between graffiti and abstract expressionist painting, the techniques and aesthetics of manual street workers (whiting with sponges, use of construction materials, remix of the fluorescent marks made by architects, abandoned objects, high-pressure cleaning tools), in a way to transmute objects and mundane practices into a new purpose and meaning, against a backdrop of an ever growing gentrification process.

His art stems from the hectic repetition of the gesture that drive the mechanical, anonymous practices of tagging and cleaning, which are part of the daily life of cities. By confronting the body and painting with space, between constant energy and fatigue, Pablo Tomek creates a painting which toys with its own destruction, resulting in a dance of pictorial ghosts.

Pablo Tomek’s work has been presented at several solo and group shows: at the galerie du jour agnès b. in Paris (“Etat des lieux”, 2013), the Frac Nord – Pas de Calais (“Toy”, 2014), in an illegally occupied industrial wasteland (“Expressiv Tag Painting”, Pantin, 2015), at the HLM in Marseille (“Honte”, 2015), the Bateau Lavoir (“Après Coup”, 2015), the Mini Galerie in Amsterdam (“Worker Games”, 2016), the Lasco Project #7 (Paris, 2016) where he produced a 500 sqm outdoor mural at the Palais de Tokyo, and Urban Spree Galerie in February 2017, following a 2-week in situ residency.

2016 saw a number of excellent book releases related to street art and graffiti in an ever expanding universe of specialized publications. Berlin-based gallery and bookshop Urban Spree chose 5 outstanding books published in 2016.

 


Wall Writers – Graffiti in Its Innocence

c01 Wall Writers fills an important gap in the segment of the historical approach to graffiti as it seeks to document the very origins of modern graffiti and wall writing at the source – New York City and Philadelphia in the late 1960s – and features in-depth research and interviews with major pioneer writers such as Taki183 and Cornbread with a lot of previously unpublished photographic archive.

Wall Writers explores graffiti’s foray into mainstream society in a period of social turmoil and tries to replace it in the culture of the time and up to its current status of a greater acceptance by the society as a popular art form. Alongside the 2012-published “bible” curated by Andrea Caputto “All City Writers“, Wall Writers is a reference book and research on the topic of the origins of the movement.

Wall Writers is also a documentary film written by Chris Pape and directed by Roger Gastman, released in 2016.

The black books are sketchbooks where a writer sketches, pastes photographs of his pieces, polishes his style and makes research for future pieces. Those notebooks, oscillating between training and memorabilia, are rarely seen by the public and are however an essential part of the writer’s style evolution.

Boris Tellegen started graffiti in 1984 at 14 in Amsterdam and caught the virus while visiting the USA with his father and discovered Seen, Quik, Blade… and later Bando in Paris.

“Between 1986 and 1997, I kept a black book. It was an A4-sized book with a hard cover in which I made sketches and pasted photos of my own grati work. Particularly in the early years, I had the book with me wherever I went. The black book allowed me to show other writers what I’d done. Not everything made it into the book, only the work I was proud of. Gradually, the function of the book changed from portfolio to personal logbook. The black book stayed at home more and more often and I began pasting all kinds of stu in it. However, instead of using suitable glues to paste the photos and sketches, I used poor quality glue such as rubber cement, blue 3M photo mount and adhesive tape. My first book, a Daler, had paper of reasonable quality. When this was full in 1992 I bought another sketchbook. The paper of this one was of very poor quality and yellowed very quickly. Gradually the books began to fall apart. With this publication I intend to give my black books a longer life. For that reason, I have not made a selection of my work, but instead every page from both black books is photographed and accompanied by annotations in the back.”

The book is a luxury object with a thick leather cover and biographical notes where the artist traces the origins of his graffiti style as well as moments and cities which were critical to his formative years.

 


Conor Harrington: Watch Your Palace Fall

conor-harrington-227x300Released by a british art publisher usually specialized in Francis Bacon or Gerhard Richter’s monographs and catalogues raisonnés, Watch Your Palace Fall is a well-deserved achievement for the London-based Irish street artist and painter, whose original graffiti practice evolved to street art and wall painting to a work more focused on studio paintings, influenced by the movement and gesture of graffiti, classical painting from the Siècle d’Or and modern english painting.

The monograph is organized between outdoor works and indoor pieces and is a comprehensive and high-quality book retracing Conor Harrington’s career to date, and is a good example of a successful trajectory from street art to contemporary art circles.

Saeio 2009 – 2014

Saeio’s graffiti style and paintings are redefining the practice of wall painting, tagging, and the way public spaces are utilized.
