Publik-Privat at Urban Spree Gallery

Urban Spree Gallery is proud to start its 2013 artistic season with a photographic exhibition titled Publik-Privat (from 14.03 to 13.04 2013).

The exhibition features 31 portraits composed by Berlin-based French photographer Bilbo Calvez of personalities that are part of the Berlin cultural and artistic milieu and include well known musicians/DJs, filmmakers/actors, kabaretists or visual artists.

All the persons photographed have come to Bilbo’s studio in Kreuzberg to pose in front of her camera and submit themselves to an intriguing protocol: Bilbo would edit one portrait reflective of their public side (the appearance under which those persons are known to their public through TV or press photos) and one portrait that takes on the private side, as their friends and family usually know them. But how can you force a person to try to simulate an official face or fake friendship when they hardly know the photographer?

Soon enough, both series of portraits started to produce striking impressions, creating larger-than-life effects. Patterns were soon to emerge. And left-handed persons had different features in their portrait than right-handed persons. Why would it be so? What could explain those similarities and discrepancies?

Because Bilbo’s portraits are actually portraits of brains. They are a composition based on the right and left sides of the face, and digitally reconstructed to create symetric portraits, the public side being about power, ego, logical thinking (left hemisphere of the brain), and the private side being about emotions and intuitions (right hemisphere of the brain). Based on Bilbo’s background in genetics and her intensive research on the topic, those doppelgänger portraits offer a stunning reading grid into the persona of the artists whose portrait was probably never seen before with such an acute precision.

Bilbo Calvez major exhibition at Urban Spree, subtitled ‘Asymmetrophobie 2’ explores the crossroads of genetics and scientific photography, the history of portraits in photography and questions photographic manipulations in our digital age.

Vernissage on March 14th, 2013, starting at 19:00 in the presence of the artist.

The Urban Spree Project

In the course of June 2012, The Urban Spree project will come to life.

After more than a year of hard work, heavy location scouting, and planning, we are very excited to launch soon our new Berlin-based project, Urban Spree.

Located within the R.A.W. Tempel’s compound, one of the last alternative places in the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Urban Spree is a multi-faceted initiative focused on the City.

Berlin’s fascinating history and contemporary urban redeployment makes it a location of choice in Europe to exhibit urban cultures, mixing thoughts and artists in a vibrant and stimulating environment.

Our objective is to build a creative exhibition space mixing artists inspired by cities, urban landscapes, industrial legacies, urban decay, urban utopies, megalopolis, transportation and energy, ecological practices…  in a large display of creative talents (street and graffiti artists, photographers, musicians, plasticians, authors, illustrators…).

We wish to invite artists whose work, while not necessarily focused on Berlin, revolves around the City and captures its mutations through a wide variety of media and urban practices. It is also intended to develop a particular relationship with non-Berliner artists and encourage them to showcase their work in Berlin and develop bonds with the city, its inhabitants and visitors.

Urban Spree is shaped around four pillars:

–  The Ateliers/Artists’ Labs where artists and designers produce their work in an open, collaborative way and engage with the public through creative, DIY workshops;

– An indoor/outdoor exhibition space devoted to street art, urban photography, and street cultures;

– A store devoted to urban cultures with our selection of books documenting street art, photography, street cultures + magazines, documentaries, music, as well as limited editions screenprints and t-shirts crafted in the Ateliers by our resident or visiting artists;

– An outdoor space consisting of mobile street food and bar units.

Construction work will now begin.

We’ll be posting frequent news on the progress of the works during the month of May through the Blog, facebook and twitter of Urban Spree.

Yuto Yamada: Berlin/Tokyo II

Urban Spree Galerie presents ‘Berlin/Tokyo ll’, a photographic exhibition by Berlin-based Japanese photographer Yuto Yamada, opening on 17.11.2017 in our Galerie Ecke.

Berlin/Tokyo ll opens on the same night as Victor Ash’s 10-year Anniversary of the Astronaut Cosmonaut wall and will run until 10.12.2017.

Berlin and Tokyo are the two favorite topics of urban photographer Yuto Yamada and the subject of this exhibition one year after presenting his “Berlin/Tokyo” series at Urban Spree: Berlin as the city where he now lives and works since several year and the city of his childhood and youth, Tokyo.

In his ongoing series ‘Berlin/Tokyo’ he takes us on a journey to the dirty, abandoned side of Berlin with all its graffiti, destruction and decay, in absolute contrast with the modern and shiny photos of Tokyo’s illuminated cityscape, a stunning and surreal opposition.

‘BERLIN / TOKYO II’ is a photographic journey and modernist tale of two apparently opposed metropolises, the hi-tech Tokyo and the lo-fi Berlin.
