Tavar Zavacki New Mural in Sacramento

Urban Spree Resident Artist Tavar Zawacki (aka Above) participated in August 2017 to the Wide Open Walls Mural Festival in Sacramento, California.

On this occasion, he painted a large mural downtown entitled “Metamorphosis #2“.

This motive stems from a new body of large scale works on canvas which will be presented for the first time at Urban Spree Galerie from 07.09.2017 to 08.10.2017.

The solo show “Metamorphosis” will display only large formats and marks a clear new direction for the artist.

In addition to the exhibition, Urban Spree Books will publish “Metamorphosis“, a 168-page monograph retracing the latest works and murals of the artist.

Last but not the least, a screen print set of 2 prints will be released for the show in a standard black-and-white edition as well as a large silver and gold edition.

// Tomoki Tamura (Holic Trax / Doublet) From Osaka //

The rare breed that is Tomoki Tamura started his journey with dance music in Japan and has come a long way since. A move to London in 2004 inaugurated a series of Holic nights that would eventually lead him to rock the floors of top London venues including Fabric, Ministry of Sound, and Plastic People. Meanwhile, he had gained enough experience and respect to earn himself a residency at the legendary club The END / AKA from 2007 until its closure in 2009.

Quickly growing to become a staple night in London’s nightlife, HOLIC continued to flourish as it brought a fresh selection of quality house and techno djs to the capital. While the party bubbled in London, it also earned permanent residency at one of Japan’s most respected clubs, Womb in Tokyo. He began to play an important roll being the main underground music ambassador connecting Tokyo to London. With immediate affect, Tomoki received the much deserved respect and started to play in all corners of the world.

Almost a decade after HOLIC’s establishment, the launch of the label HOLIC TRAX came naturally in 2012 with a release from none other than Mr. G. The label’s unique raw take on house music has earned enormous praise from underground music lovers. With releases from Tuccillo, Rick Wade, Chris Carrier, Ekkohaus & Rufus, Kate Simko, and Robert Dietz, the label has proven to follow its own taste without compromise. Tomoki is one half of Doublet, a project in collaboration with Italian Ibiza resident Tuccillo. HOLIC TRAX has been the main outlet for their unique take on raw and moody house tracks.

Although proving to be a credible producer, label owner, and promoter, he knows his records the most and is a DJ above all. He now resides in Berlin where he calls home.

Scarlatti goes Electro , MDMS SPKR , Debmaster

Urban Spree late live shows !!!

SCARLATTI GOES ELECTRO

Duetto for harpsichord and Synthetizers

SCARLATTI GOES ELECTRO is a duo formed by Antoine Souchav’ and Michel Bananes Jr, mixing baroque music and electronic music. With lots of frenetic rythms and bass lines (and in authentic costumes), in a free adaptation of the score, where the instrumental playing has a real importance, comes a generous and dancing music, always fast and heady.

“I was totally stunned when I heard them ! Their compositions are fantastic! They are remarkably skilled, and I predict that they will succeed incontestably in this fucking profession; they’ve finally found something to brighten up the obsolete and deteriorated state of current electronic music

And they do it with very new sounds, most importantly thanks to an overflowing imagination and also with the audacity and humour of youth, an attitude which greatly distinguishes them from the old guys… ”

JEAN-JACQUES PERREY

MDM SPK (London)

“MDME SPKR make and create for me the most unique and hard real punk music around -why you might ask ?because they pander to no one are lyrically poignant and above all do not have an identikit look that would appeal to the neurosis of a scene or the desire to be in one which what was punk was all about originally -this is a true organic band all on it’s own beautiful axis all 100% DIY- the music speaks for itself hard and visceral,i’ve said enough ..LISTEN !!!” Cherrystones ( Touch Sensitive/ Brutal music ) ///

“Ego-destroying and powerful soul music in the true sense of the word” Demian Castellanos (The Oscillation) ///

“MDME SPKR make a dirty fuzzed up noise that sends me back to a Seattle,New York,Chicago or Washington basement in 1987” Chris Reeder(Rocket Recordings) ///

Sabbat: Yajuj o Majuj, Anemone Tube, Geometria del Esplendor

A night of Dark Ritualistic Meditation .

Sabbat berlin presents Yajuj o Majuj (Iran)

> Yajuj o Majuj (Live)

Yajuj o majuj is a Duet-sound in contrast with agitated fiction modern dystopia to decelerate chaos in order to reach to the timeless level of being where one can experience no place and realize the illusion mankind is trapped in.
Yajuj o majuj is a Atmospheric Dark ambient – Experimental live project
A Post Modern Approach to Persian Dark Retreat Meditation

>ANEMONE TUBE

Anemone Tube was founded 1996 in South-Germany; since 2010 based in Berlin. The audio works of Anemone Tube are a unique blend of dark ambient, noise, industrial and sound-art with a strong psychogenic impact. The use of constantly shifting and altering sounds and moods is possibly one of the most intriguing things about the audio creations of Anemone Tube. Since 2007 Anemone Tube has been working on “The Suicide Series”. To this field recordings made in China and Japan build a conceptional basis. In a poetic way Anemone Tube combines analytical realism of the phenomenal world with buddhist psychology and nihilist rhetoric influenced by the works of Pier Paolo Pasolini, H.P. Lovecraft, J.G. Ballard and Hayao Miyazaki.

In the latest “Golden Temple” live set Anemone Tube creates a sacred and engaging atmosphere through Buddhist rituals, utilizing liturgic objects (statues, candles, censer and incense) and highly aesthetic video projections showing old masters paintings with religiously charged symbolism (Greek mythology, old and new testament, Buddhism) and contemporary photographs, offering an absorbing, inspiring as well as complex concept, which not only raises spiritual questions, how we live and die, but above all fascinates the audience on a purely emotional & spiritual level.

Releases:
CD, tape and vinyl releases on Auf Abwegen (DE), Raubbau/Ant-Zen (DE), Peripheral Records (GB), Silken Tofu (BE), Black Horizons (USA), La Esencia (ES) and The Epicurean (DE).

Geometria del Esplendor (Movie screening)

Original music by ESPLENDOR GEOMÉTRICO and FRANCISCO LÓPEZ
“Geometría del Esplendor” is a documentary on the legendary band known as Esplendor Geométrico. This film captures more than thirty years of music, creativity and indepen- dence during the revolution of techno music. It takes you back to the times and to the foundation of the art that still lives on today throughout Spain and Europe. The style is described in a metromatic decalogue or key combination, among other things, are laid out using structures of guidance, like a symphony, different assembly order and set com- binations of random appearances, like music models and interviews, but are well put to- gether.

In 1980, a student, a graphic designer and a prison public servant founded ESPLENDOR GEOMÉTRICO, a music band that soon became the seed of the most extreme and radical industrial music waves. These waves are the reflection of a cultural and unique period of our history. In the documentary GEOMETRÍA DEL ESPLENDOR, directed
by the film maker José Ramón da Cruz, sound and image becomes a whole corpus of “visual music”.

No More Crew: Jan Kaláb, Pasta Oner, Michal Škapa

NO MORE CREW

KALÁB / PASTA / ŠKAPA

A strong trio. Grew up together. Long-standing friendships. Shared experience. Rocket engines. Parallel beginnings. Trajectories that have diverged over time, but remain firmly connected, consecrated by the code of graffiti. The No More Crew brotherhood.

An exhibition built around the confrontation of its participants – a trio of friends, all distinct figures, and not only in terms of the Czech art scene. The mutual confrontation comes at no risk. Jan Kaláb, Pasta Oner and Michal Škapa are equals. What they share is tenacity, ambition, drive, vigor, audacity, humor, and every now and then also a wall, as well as mutual friends and their common age. What distinguishes them is their approach, form, tools, the venues of their solo exhibitions, the locations of their respective studios, and the number of their children.

With the soul of an architect, Jan Kaláb easily conquers the third dimension not only in his murals, but also in his canvases. He has grown to embrace the painter within, and although his forte is the creation of objects he has been chiseling away at geometric abstraction, discovering spaces interior and without, regardless of the clichéd expression “that’s been done.”

The same could be said of Pasta Oner. It is possible to cite the clearly visible sources of inspiration, identify the specific paraphrases. Yet one must also take into account the force and accuracy with which he mirrors the conservative Central European mindset. How spot-on is his commentary on the bad habits of consumerism, or the directness with which he tackles the large format through his short post-pop messages.

Michal Škapa, by contrast, works with the moment of replication, the multiplication of a graphic element, with a hand patently the descendant of an expert graffiti artist. His style is ornamental, rhythmic, abstract and concrete at the same time. He is the draughtsman of his canvases, the transmitter of symbols, creator of expansive mural-format comics with unsettling subject matter.

The exhibition No More Crew at Urban Spree Galerie presents a trio of disparate and yet splendidly and mutually complementary artists. Their work defies being simply the result of the overused epithet “drawing on street art”, and at the same time any confrontation with their work requires such a label. Space, place, city, symbol, sign. Something for everybody.

Biographies:

Michal Škapa (*1978) alias TRON belongs to the most expressive wave of Czech (Prague) writers with many achievements to his credit. He is engaged in countless graphic activities with the magazines “Free Magazine” and “Upstream”, ranging from festival visuals, books, CD covers for bands, web design, and the creation of original fonts, to the design of posters and invitations to arts events. His graphics projects of the recent period include Names Festival, Kick the Shit! Bitch!, OBR, the Thick-skinned Moviegoers’ Festival for the Aero Movie Theater, IFP, visuals for the Bigg Boss label, etc. In addition to computer graphics, who also produces drawings and airbrush works. He brings his vivid imagination to bear on graffiti and visual effects. Member of CAP, NUTS, DSK a TOYZ!

www.834.cz

Pasta Oner is one of the most original figures on the Czech contemporary art scene. Ever a creative mind, Pasta Oner has, in the recent years and in keeping with his graffiti and street art roots which go back to the turn of the millenium, focused on asserting himself within the system of independent and publicly funded galleries. He weds pop-art to cartoon, transcending both categories.

Although he touches, at the core of his philosophy, on the principles of post-production, Pasta Oner stands apart from the current trend of post-conceptualism and blazes his trail in the Czech art world as a media-savvy and widely known, if slightly controversial artist.

The work of Pasta Oner presents an original, ironic commentary on contemporary popular culture. Pasta Oner’s traditional themes of obsession with money, sex, religion, luxury goods and the consumerist notions of beauty are translated into new contexts characterised by the technologisation of life, the increasing speed of information and the short attention-span aesthetics of today’s culture. It is into this world, of which Pasta – like all of us – is a part, that he brings his engaged art.

www.pastaoner.cz

When Jan Kaláb was born in 1978 in Czechoslovakia, graffiti was not to be seen in the Eastern World. In the nineties, as the country was opening itself to western influences, he became one of the pioneer of the local scene, and founded an iconic crew, the DSK. Sleepless nights around train yards, light tubes at police stations and above all hard work on his style: he went through all the classical steps of a writer’s career. Through Europe, he made a name for himself as Cakes. Next step to the Hall of fame: New York, where he made a big impression by painting whole cars in 2000, alongside with Key and Rome. Around the same time, he found a new way to push his own limits and under the name Point, he sculpted and installed huge abstracts letters in the streets and on the walls. This was another form of graffiti, in daylight, and without a spray, but truthful to the spirit of competition and innovation of the urban scene. Those sculptures lead him to abstraction, a path he’s been exploring through canvas from 2007, using acrylic painting and brushes. In the meantime, this admirer of Kupka graduated from the Academy of fine Arts of Prague – becoming the first Czech writer to do so.

Jan Kaláb had his first solo exhibition in 2008 in Prague. Others solos took place in Romania, Argentina, Germany or in the United States.

www.jankalab.com

Škapa, Kaláb and Pasta often exhibited together (for example: 2009 –Storage, Prague, The Chemistry Gallery, 2011 – Boutique, Prague, The Chemistry Gallery, 2011 – Can You Dig It?, Brussels/Belgium, Pragues House) and they organised shows or met many times together at group shows (2008 – City Celebrities, Brno, Moravská galerie in Brno, 2008 – Names (streetart festival), Prague, Trafacka, 2010 – Metropolis, Shanghai/China, EXPO 2010, Czech pavilion, 2010 – Corners, Shanghai, Beijing/China, Source, 2010 – Metropolis, Prague, DOX, 2012 – Possessed by the City, Prague, Galerie hlavního města Prahy – Městská knihovna).

Paperhead

Mit neuem Album im Gepäck kommen die 3 Boys aus Nashville endlich wieder mal nach Deutschland.
& dabei machen sie natürlich auch in Berlin halt um „Chew“ live zu präsentieren.
17022295_10202746598183820_3308603814698730014_n
“The Paperhead have been Nashville’s best-kept secret for years now. The trio of Ryan Jennings, Peter Stringer-Hye & Walker Mimms have crafted three albums of psych-pop perfection, starting with their 2010 album “Focus In On… The Looking Glass” & last leaving us with 2014’s “Africa Avenue”. They return in fine form with their fourth magnum opus, entitled “Chew”. Having been lifelong fans of psychedelia & prog rock, the band found themselves at the forefront of the neo-psych revival, but unlike many of their contemporaries, the band has deftly avoided comparisons to most modern-day psych acts. In their six years as a band, they’ve found a way to straddle four decades of music, cherry-picking elements from a crop ripe for picking. As teens, the members of the Paperhead were Sixties British psychedelia obsessives & it showed – their debut (as The Looking Glass) and their “s/t” 2011 album as The Paperhead (a name taken from a line in Sixties psychedelic group July’s song “My Clown”) both demonstrated a clear understanding of the Floyd/Barrett legacy, mingling lysergic pop with oblique jams. Recent years have seen the trio expanding their sound into something more progressive and experimental, incorporating country rock, AM radio broadcasts, jazz, Zappa-inflected prog-rock and folk. The sheer level of sophistication in the group’s arrangements starting in 2010 at age eighteen can be seen two-fold; an open internet allowed the trio to absorb as much music as they wanted with a keystroke, compounded with a loyal & dedicated core group of friends & allies from bands and record stores in the Nashville music scene with whom they collected records. The Paperhead’s current oeuvre showcases a band whose strengths lie in each other; the raw talent & chemistry flourishes as three minds came together as one with Jennings, Stringer-Hye & Mimms operating in tandem, each anticipating the other’s moves before they make it and whose collaborative spirit reigns in the studio. In most band’s hands, the freedom & convenience of music these days could be a detriment, but rather than committing the cardinal sin of many modern acts by drenching everything in reverb, The Paperhead revel in clarity & melody. The band will stretch out & jam in a live setting, but their recent album’s celebrate structure and, above all – songs. The case can be made that many bands aren’t allowed the time to ripen & mature, most flaming out before they really “lock in” & find their way. With “Chew”, The Paperhead’s time is nigh, and we couldn’t be happier to take a bite.”
