Toums: Primitive Acids

Urban Spree Galerie presents « Primitive Acids » a photographic exhibition by Toums from 20.10 to 12.11.2017.

« Primitive Acids » is the first German solo show of the French experimental analog photographer Thomas Gosset a.k.a. Toums.

Wandering between his native Bordeaux and Berlin, Toums redefines the medium of analog artistic photography by attacking his negatives with acids, ink, paint and other physical alterations and combining his skillsets with a dark contemporary mythology.

Working in darkroom and strictly excluding all forms of modern technique, his practice lurks in the footsteps of the late 19th century pioneers and early 20th century surrealist avant-gardes.

Portraits are his preferred genre. Toums destructures them until they achieve the transmutated vision that the artist has assigned to them. Like a deus ex machina, the photographer creates the portrait with his camera and subsequently creates the final image through his manipulations ex-post.

Utterly disrespectful of the medium, desacralizing it in order to provide a new meaning, Toums is a rare breed of an iconoclast photographer, with filiation looking towards Joel-Peter Witkin, Pierre Molinier, and Roger Ballen.

His direct and deadly intervention on the film, the materia prima of his work, procures a highly unstable result. Soon to be destroyed by acids, slowly corroding the matter, the films are revealed in the darkroom process and printed on silver gelatin. As the film returns to dust, the portraits become fugitives, trying to escape their own fate, living in a printed dimension and refusing mortality. It is no accident that most Toums compositions are building a new mythology with some elements borrowed from the Greek corpus of myths.

« I destroy my own films with the intention of entering in the very heart of the photosensitive material, which allows me to have a direct control over the frozen reality that I destructure at will. The goal being to understand this matter as painting with the intention of pushing back the normal process of photography to expand my own field of investigation and thus regain an imaginative and narrative freedom. For years I wanted to freeze absurd moments in reality. »

Twoone / Hiroyasu Tsuri Urban Spree Residency in video

A year ago in July 2016, Urban Spree Galerie invited Twoone / Hiroyasu Tsuri for a full 3-week residency in the gallery, a first experiment into using the gallery as a creation and dynamic space rather than a space to hang artworks. The public was welcome to see the creative process and day-to-day progression of the residency. Once the show was complete, it was open to the public for one night and a day and then ended.

Over the course of the residency, Hiro created multiple large format artworks on canvas and plexiglas, a neon installation and 2 large canvases in collaboration with Jun Inoue, in a very energetic live painting session.

In addition to indoor works, Hiro painted the Urban Spree Artist Wall (15 m x 8 m).

Last but not the least, Urban Spree Books released a risographed zine « Berlin 2014-2016« , a collection of portraits sketched in the streets of Berlin during the past two years.

Christiania Krueger filmed the whole performance and we are releasing now his video, divided in 3 parts: indoor artworks, live painting ant mural painting.

VAO Collective at Urban Spree

Urban Spree Galerie invites 10 artists of the VAO collective for an exceptional Art Residency in Berlin.

Counded in 1996 by L’Atlas, the collective is celebrating this year 20 years of urban and contemporary creation.

vao_collectif_logo-copie

Rooted in graffiti and street art at its inception (« Vandales à l’Origine »), the members of the collective have spread their art in different directions over the years, gaining recognition in the art world while maintaining strong links to the street practice that still define them, from abstract calligraphy and graffiti, « calligrammes », land art, to minimalism and expressionism.

The Art Residency at Urban Spree is not a retrospective but an exceptional occasion for the artists to work together during a week and redefine what the essence of the collective is about. The exhibition will also introduce the latest member of the crew, the Torino-based minimalist artist CT, who joined the collective in October 2016.

All artworks will be created in situ, in the gallery, on the walls and in the garden during this unique period.

The public is welcome to witness the Residency work-in-progress everyday from November 14th to 17th which will culminate into the Opening on November 18th at 19:00.

On the occasion of the residency, Urban Spree will edit a series of exclusive screen prints with L’Atlas, Tanc and CT, hand-pulled in the screen print studio at Urban Spree.

Participating VAO Artists:

ALETEIA

Emilie Garnaud a.k.a Aleteïa, is a French artist who mostly uses sticky tape and spray cans for her works. She defines her work as an urban mythological laboratory, where she collects stories and words. She uses a symbolic and universal language and leads a dialogue which permits her to question anything.

L’ATLAS

Jules Dedet Granel, aka L’Atlas, is a French artist born in 1978. He began doing graffiti in the early 1990s before co-founding the VAO Collective (« Vandales à l’Origine ») in 1996 with Elger and Koers.

Fascinated by the history of handwriting, he has studied calligraphy in several countries and designed his own typography. He frequently works in public spaces and has become a major figure of the Street Art movement. He has also developed a pictural universe, where he leads the written word towards calligraphic abstraction. His style has made him one of our time’s most interesting young artists, moving from the instant and public forum of street art into prestigious art galleries and progressive art spaces.

He lives and works in Paris.

BABOU

Babou is an iconic figure in street art and is a graffiti activist in Paris since 1985. Sculptor and urban artist, his practice focuses on the atmosphere and the gesture of the tag. His images seek to recreate the energy and movement of the street, using the city walls as canvas and transforming them into images that question the contemporary Dasein.

BENJAMIN LAADING

Benjamin Laading creates a fresh vision of graffiti with his technical repetition of dots. It celebrates accidentality, degradation, and vandalism, all these undesirable manifestations which disturb the monotony of a functional and controlled environment. His work is like a window between two worlds, which reflects an inner conflict between instinct and reason, which is present in every one of us.

CLYDE KNOWLAND

Clyde Knowland finalized a painting technique halfway between calligraphy and drawing. His very gestural work tends to reproduce in an almost abstract way what he calls « an urban jungle » and its energy. Sometimes totems or tribal figures come out of his paintings as buildings and skyscrapers, to give life to these chaotic and inhuman landscapes.

CT

For over a decade, CT has been internationally active with urban art projects. His style has transitioned from a classic graffiti wild style into contemporary minimalism. Working in abandoned and lost spaces, CT searches for the perfect canvas that has the potential to create a contrast from his minimal mark. Graffiti minimalism, a deconstructed form taken to its most basic embodiment while still maintaining its initial concept of letter structure.

SUN7

Born in 1977. Jonas Bournat a.k.a. SUN 7 lives and works in Paris. He is obviously a child of crossing of word and image, poetry and color, art and street. His art consists of portraits and coded texts creating a subtle play of appearance/disappearance, in which everything related to calligraphy, glyphs and ideograms becomes as unreal as can be, nurturing a sense of mystery. Jonas Sun7’s work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and art fairs since 1997. His work has been exposed in places such as Grand Palais, Fondation Cartier, Espace Louis Vuitton and Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

TANC

Tancrède Perrot aka Tanc is an abstract graffiti artist who lives and works in Paris. His unique art is about lines, vibrations and repetition. His work is a mix of tags, of individuals, of music which do not seek perfection, but spontaneity. He is part of a new generation of street artists who are exploring the crossroads of graffiti, action painting and optic art. He is able to touch the viewer in an intimate and immediate way through his action and energy.

VALERIE NEWLAND

Born in 1975. Lives and works in Paris and New Caledonia. Under her classic influences, she was able to discover different media and the city under an other angle. She evolved in her work of plastic art because of her curiosity and her willingness to understand the energy of other disciplines. She has a minimalist approach and it is the moment of seizure of the space, the canvas, the fluid structure, that attracts her more than the paintbrushes.

Onio + Sosek: Rawcuts/Internal

Urban Spree Galerie presents a double solo show by São Paulo-based artists Onio and Sosek.

Born out of graffiti and pixação, Onio and Sosek are invited by Urban Spree to exhibit their latest series of drawings, paintings and collages and work on site-specific projects during their Berlin residency.

onio_sosek_2

Onio: « Rawcuts » 29.07 – 14.08 (Ecke)

Returning at Urban Spree, the Brazilian artist Adriano Cinelli aka Onio brings his newest series of works entitled Rawcuts.

Onio has always been recognized for his vibrant aesthetics that oscillate between comics, illustration and painting, using strong colours in graphic meshes that tend to abstraction.

For his Urban Spree residency and exhibition, Onio takes a more experimental aproach and presents a series of colorful collages, mixing materials and techniques to attain a new aesthetics.

P1000436

The direct influence of chaos, visual pollution, and the characteristic urban aspect of São Paulo are a natural resource and inspiration to his work.

In addition to the presentation of original collages on small and medium-sized formats, Onio is also releasing a black-and-white zine entitled « Rawcuts » in a limited edition.

Sosek: « Internal » 29.07 – 07.08

For Sosek, the life in the paulistana street is inseparable from his art, notably the forgotten people, the left overs from the brazilian society, the silent homeless cohort that populates the city.

Roaming at night, he walks through São Paulo with friends to paint and photograph scenes of life on the streets, photographing the crude reality, Sosek then transcends the images in portraits and scenes, using only black ink. Unlike Onio, the world of Sosek is a world in black-and-white, drifting and dripping, rooted in calligraphy, graffiti & drawing, making the invisible, visible.

P1000483 - copie

« Internal » reveals the acute tension in the artist’s mind, the conflict with his inner self as represented by the city’s chaos. Sosek will also release his new zine, based on photographs and drawings of homeless people and decayed streets.

« I bring a sense of unease about our society and the destitute side of our existence »
