About the Artist:

Bisco Smith’s roots lie in music, hip hop, graffiti, and street art. He works in a variety of formats, including canvas and large outdoor murals, and his style can be characterized as a blend of graffiti deconstruction, gestural abstraction, and lyric-based stylewriting. Made predominantly with a black and white color palette, his art visually captures the rhythms of music and the energy of the moment through its spontaneous marks and abstracted text.

His work is regularly exhibited in major markets and is collected by both national and international collectors.

Hza Bažant: NUSLE Exhibition and Book Release

Urban Spree Galerie is proud to introduce the new series of screen printed illustration works by Prague-based artist Hza Bažant as well as the exclusive german book release of “Nusle“, based upon the Czech artist’s impressive graphic saga. Nusle is a limited edition, self published artist book released in Germany by Urban Spree on the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition at Urban Spree Galerie (03.09 / 12.09.2015).

1_Hza Bazant _ Metro _ 2013

Nusle is originally a large scale graphic cycle, consisting of individual large screen prints (70 x 100 cm) on textured & colored paper, on which stencils and spray paint have been applied to create subtle, metallic, largely fluorescent color effects and blurred lines.

5_Hza Bazant _ Bathing - detail _ 2013

The series started with 4 images based around the central character of the story, Mirek, prostrated along track lines, amidst chaotic elements.

06486_14321317825045

As years passed, the artist has been adding each year new images to the series. The series itself involves different colors of papers and different inks/paint tones so each series has a different outcome.

Today, the series consists of 14 images, creating a ever expanding universe and narrative. When juxtaposed, the series achieve a panorama of 140 cm x 700 cm.

IMG_0055

In 2015, the artist has published Nusle as a book format. The book contains 34 separate sheets which also work as a minimal approach to the large scale print series.

00772_1432131765465

Deeply rooted in Prague and czech culture, each image consists of surreal images of scenes depending on a number of seemingly unrelated, dreamlike stories, but in fact deeply intertwined. Individual images are rich scenes full of symbols, taking place in the backdrop of the urban periphery, which represents the peripheral areas of the mind.

IMG_20150817_1457365

All stories are told without words, by associations, symbols, and common features. This method is chosen with the intention to provide the reader with the greatest possible freedom of interpretation. The reader is author’s partner; he may create his network of relationships between individual characters of the story. Thus, it is possible to return to the book and read a different story each time.

nusle prezentace tisk 25

Discovery of a new layer of meanings becomes an adventure similar to the exploration of the abandoned corners in an unfamiliar city, where discarded artifacts may create a mosaic of life stories of those who left them behind. It does not matter whether the story happened or could happen; its formation is more about us than about protagonists of the story. As literature uses words to form images, in this case we are using images to build a story. The concept of the Nusle project is based on a free play of imagination stimulated by rich visual perceptions.

The book (regular and deluxe edition) will be available at the Galerie during the exhibition and after the show while stocks last. You can find it in our webstore here.

ogino:knauss | Re>Centering Periphery: Marginal Notes/Randbemerkungen Exhibition

« Randbemerkungen | Marginal Notes » is a photographic exhibition summarizing 8 years of urban explorations by the ogino:knauss collective into the modernist built environment. After their award-winning movies about Cuba and Moscow, the exhibition also becomes the platform to launch the new movie project about Berlin, called « Randbemerkungen », as well as the release of travelogue books about Berlin and Cuba and the launch of « Reconnoitering Berlin« , a series of urban « dérives » that will investigate the urban identity of the Hauptstadt through multiple perspectives.

For 3 weeks, Urban Spree will host an installation of printed works and videos, completed by a series of events including live concerts, talks, workshops, book presentations, screenings and performances.

About OGINO:KNAUSS
ogino:knauss is a Berlin-based, independent research group dealing with audiovisual language, urban cultures and human environment’s transformations.

R>CP PROJECT
Re:centering Periphery originated in 2006 with a live-media work commissioned by the Biennial del Arte de la Havana. Starting from Alamar, a new city built in the 70s in Cuba, the group investigated everyday life practices that inhabit, question and reinvent urban peripheries produced as a result of modernist ideology. The main outcome of the project was a film-series produced through a participative methodology. Until now the group has worked extensively in La Habana and Moscow, with the production of two films, set preparatory works and surveys in Kiev, Belgrade and Berlin; and opened up research files on such cities as Mexico City, Casablanca, Marseille, Tel Aviv, Detroit and Hong Kong. The project advancements are regularly published on the R>CP blog.

R>CP FILMS

The first film in the series « Doble Forza » (2008, 30’) tells the story of a self-constructed new city built with Soviet-style prefabricated panels in the 70’s in the outskirt of La Habana. It has been awarded with the Best International Documentary at the Istanbul Architecture Film Festival in 2008 and at Sezze Videofest.

The second episode « Dom Novogo Byta« , explores the imagined and built landscape of Moscow, confronting utopian visions which emerged in the light of the October revolution with the reality of contemporary post-communist Russia. The film takes the cue from the dilapidated Narkomfin building, a prototype for revolutionary communes designed in 1927 by Moisei Ginzburg, today facing hard survival in a central plot of land highly attractive to real-estate speculators.

During the exhibition the two films will be screened at Il Kino in Neukölln.

R>CP EXHIBITION
The exhibition displays a selection of photographs of La Habana, Moscow, Kiev, Belgrade and Berlin, capturing the urban and social landscape of modernist peripheries and the inner margins of the metropolis. The textures, geometries and patterns designed by the brutal architectural practices of the 20th century are shown alongside cracks, eruptions, signs of colonization and the re-appropriation by the everyday life.
Two video installations complete the set up, representing opposite directions of research. The first, focusing on the abstract substance of the architectural modernist vision, shows geometrical patterns and symmetries being digitally explored and transformed into a hypnotic graphic landscape. In the second work, conceived as a study for the forthcoming full-feature film, the attention is conversely shifted towards the human body- “Der Mensch, das Maß aller Dinge”, following through a longer sequence an elderly hindered man slowly crossing the streets of Berlin, Mitte. A live audiovisual performance will be presented at the opening night.

R>CP OPEN WORKSHOP
More than a showcase of past productions, the event at Urban Spree is primarily intended as a discursive platform for realising the new film project Randbemerkungen.

During these 3 weeks, a series of events will involve known as well as new collaborators of the group presenting and performing theme-related works in progress. According to the participative methodology of the group, interdisciplinary conversations, live audio video performances, live sonorisation of films, workshops of spatial assessment and dérives, will act as resource-material for the upcoming film. During the last days of the exhibition, the launch of Reconnoitering Berlin will take place, a series of urban dérives that in the following months will investigate the urban identity of Berlin according to multiple perspectives.

R>CP BOOKS
The Re:centering Periphery Travelogues is a new series of photographic essays documenting the survey into global urban peripheries done by the collective:

-La Habana InT/Ext (2006) is a 5-week diary shot in Cuba, focusing on the strong dichotomies affecting the Cuban social landscape.

The basic cinematographic dialectics interior / exterior is variously reinterpreted as centre and periphery, legal and illegal, private and public…

-Exposing Berlin, is the result of a long-term observation of the transformations of the city since 2007, when the collective moved its base. The photographic essay dedicated to Mitte and Friedrichshain points at the conflation of image and spatial production in a neo-liberal urban development. The camera investigates the attempt to reinvent a unified central identity of Berlin in the place of the fragmented urban reality which carries scars and memories of a divided past.

The R>CP Travelogues are printed in a limited edition of 200 copies, available at Urban Spree’s Bookshop.

R>CP Crowdfunding
One of the exhibition’s main purposes is to sustain the future development of the project and support the realisation of the film Berlin Randbemerkungen. In the occasion of the exhibition a crowdfunding campaign will be launched to support the pre-production work for the film. Photographic prints, silkscreen prints, books and other limited-edition products will be on sale during the events at Urban Spree.

Metroidz: Graffiti Group Show Opening & Exhibition

Flyer WebUrban Spree Galerie proudly invites you to the opening of the first show of the 2015 season, “Metroidz”.

After the successful series of hand painted variations on the Teufelsberg print last year, we wanted to launch a new print series focused on subways and graffiti, with a first edition rooted in Berlin.

The choice of the artist responsible for the drawing was cast on French artist Niklos for his capacity to create an original drawing based on a real & imaginary Berlin cityscape with high density backgrounds, sci-fi elements “à la Moebius” and lots of attention to details.

An edition of 40 prints was screen printed by Dolly at her Urban Spree studio in an edition of 2 colors, black and ‘yellow U-Bahn’ on 270 gsm archival paper, in a large 100 x 70 cm format.

Against this backdrop, French photographer Thorfine, curator of the show, has asked 20 Berlin-based & still active graffiti writers to be part of the project and project their art and vision on the print.

The resulting line-up is one of the strongest Berlin has to offer:

Fach – Trik – Spirit – Roza – 1UP Crew – Poet – Fino – Quis – Tour -Shade – Bas2 – Chika – Igid – Inka – Leroy – Roger – Pesd – Eshok -Stereo – Tin

The Metroidz series can be viewed as a historic slice of the Berlin subway graffiti culture of the past decade as well as a strong artistic manifesto for Berlin style writing, in a format never attempted before.

The 20 prints will be presented on Saturday, February 28th, 2015 at the Urban Spree Galerie, with 3 additional A/P prints hand painted by Niklos himself.

Tuesday-Roza-TLS-CTM

Niklos will draw directly on the gallery walls to create an original scenography for the print show.

The regular, 2 color edition print series will also be available at the galerie in a limited run of 20 prints.

Exhibition curated by Thorfine, supported by Montana Cans and The Grifters.
