Pablo Tomek new solo show “Thank You Boss”

Urban Spree Galerie announces the first german solo show of Paris-based post-graffiti artist Pablo Tomek, opening on Saturday 18.02.2017 at 18:30 after a full 2-week Berlin residency at Urban Spree.

As part of its Art Residency Program, Urban Spree Galerie has invited the Paris-based artist Pablo Tomek in February 2017 to invest its Berlin space for 2 weeks to create large-format artworks in situ, a couple of months after his participation to the Palais de Tokyo’s Lasco Project where he created a 500sqm outdoor mural.

PABLO TOMEK SHOW OPENING "THANK YOU BOSS" OPENS ON 18.02

For Tomek, the construction and building sites scattering the city are endless sources of materials and plastic inspiration, whereby the relationship between building and demolition seems like a paradigm of the modern world, an aesthetics prone to détournements and dérives.

The materials flow in, the materials come into confrontation, the colours are damaged, the accidents shape, and things are born.

FEBRUARY IN URBAN SPREE

The exhibition “Thank You Boss” is a homage to the unknown and undetected aesthetics and “paintings” of construction workers, to the graffiti artists who ransack palisades, to the glass cleaners, to the roadside accidents that reshape the space, to the posters paste-ups, and time, that pulls them away.
Tomek’s first published monograph, “Teren Alchemia“, published by Classic Paris in January 2017, will be on display in the Urban Spree shop.

About the artist:

The art of Pablo Tomek (b. 1988 in Paris) originates in graffiti for which he has developed a rough experimental approach, which is further refined in his studio practice. Tomek studies the relationships between graffiti and abstract expressionist painting, the techniques and aesthetics of manual street workers (whiting with sponges, use of construction materials, remix of the fluorescent marks made by architects, abandoned objects, high-pressure cleaning tools), in a way to transmute objects and mundane practices into a new purpose and meaning, against a backdrop of an ever growing gentrification process.

His art stems from the hectic repetition of the gesture that drive the mechanical, anonymous practices of tagging and cleaning, which are part of the daily life of cities. By confronting the body and painting with space, between constant energy and fatigue, Pablo Tomek creates a painting which toys with its own destruction, resulting in a dance of pictorial ghosts.

Pablo Tomek’s work has been presented at several solo and group shows: at the galerie du jour agnès b. in Paris (“Etat des lieux”, 2013), the Frac Nord – Pas de Calais (“Toy”, 2014), in an illegally occupied industrial wasteland (“Expressiv Tag Painting”, Pantin, 2015), at the HLM in Marseille (“Honte”, 2015), the Bateau Lavoir (“Après Coup”, 2015), the Mini Galerie in Amsterdam (“Worker Games”, 2016), the Lasco Project #7 (Paris, 2016) where he produced a 500 sqm outdoor mural at the Palais de Tokyo, and Urban Spree Galerie in February 2017, following a 2-week in situ residency.

Band descriptions:

➤ MONOMYTH | The Hague, NL

THE VOYAGE. Unleashed from The Netherlands in 2011, with instrumental music as aim and rooted in Space, Trance, Prog, Ambient and Krautrock with trips into Psych, Drone and Stoner, Monomyth is a travel agency, a vehicle and a destination all in one. A collective journey and statement of five like-minded identities from different creative and musical backgrounds, who search for, explore and expand the boundaries of their own musical universe – leaning heavily on a solid foundation of drums and bass guitar, while adding guitar, keyboards and textures layer upon layer. Furthermore moving beyond to another world – to a cosmic playground that feels both new and familiar – an arena where there is no more time or space. A vacuum caused by shifting patterns, repetitions and drones, you can enter in two ways: Simply by closing your eyes and letting the instrumental music transport you. Or with your eyes wide open as you descend into the mind staggering light show. Clear, transparent and trance-inducing.

The Monomyth theory, conceived by Joseph Campbell, incorporates a systematic representation of an adventure, the band translates into a musical form and concepts through the the trilogy of their current records: While three years ago on their self-titled debut calling to adventure and the first exploration of the possibilities, and later on their second record ‘Further’ implementing the main theme of movement, the break through to the great unknown and the fusion to a coherent whole, with their new and third album ‘Exo’ Monomyth completes its own epic trilogy and sets foot ashore with the chapter of discovery – mapping of a completely new territory, a musical Exoplanet, with a few interesting experiments, new elements and surprises the attentive listener will notice. No matter what, the technical possibilities are utilised to perfection – both in music and story.

This is music for “the mind, the body and the soul”. This is… Monomyth.

➤ VAYL | Berlin, DE

ECLIPSE THE SUN. Currently Berlin’s VAyL step more than ever into the scene. With straight, riffs, a deep groove and thundering drums, these three fresh youngsters create a sound with it’s very own character – servin’ you an acoustic armageddon, the slo-mo as well as the thrasher among us bangs his brain off to. The right sound to fuel this night’s spaceship for… take off!

VAO Collective at Urban Spree

Urban Spree Galerie invites 10 artists of the VAO collective for an exceptional Art Residency in Berlin.

Counded in 1996 by L’Atlas, the collective is celebrating this year 20 years of urban and contemporary creation.

vao_collectif_logo-copie

Rooted in graffiti and street art at its inception (“Vandales à l’Origine”), the members of the collective have spread their art in different directions over the years, gaining recognition in the art world while maintaining strong links to the street practice that still define them, from abstract calligraphy and graffiti, “calligrammes”, land art, to minimalism and expressionism.

The Art Residency at Urban Spree is not a retrospective but an exceptional occasion for the artists to work together during a week and redefine what the essence of the collective is about. The exhibition will also introduce the latest member of the crew, the Torino-based minimalist artist CT, who joined the collective in October 2016.

All artworks will be created in situ, in the gallery, on the walls and in the garden during this unique period.

The public is welcome to witness the Residency work-in-progress everyday from November 14th to 17th which will culminate into the Opening on November 18th at 19:00.

On the occasion of the residency, Urban Spree will edit a series of exclusive screen prints with L’Atlas, Tanc and CT, hand-pulled in the screen print studio at Urban Spree.

Participating VAO Artists:

ALETEIA

Emilie Garnaud a.k.a Aleteïa, is a French artist who mostly uses sticky tape and spray cans for her works. She defines her work as an urban mythological laboratory, where she collects stories and words. She uses a symbolic and universal language and leads a dialogue which permits her to question anything.

L’ATLAS

Jules Dedet Granel, aka L’Atlas, is a French artist born in 1978. He began doing graffiti in the early 1990s before co-founding the VAO Collective (“Vandales à l’Origine”) in 1996 with Elger and Koers.

Fascinated by the history of handwriting, he has studied calligraphy in several countries and designed his own typography. He frequently works in public spaces and has become a major figure of the Street Art movement. He has also developed a pictural universe, where he leads the written word towards calligraphic abstraction. His style has made him one of our time’s most interesting young artists, moving from the instant and public forum of street art into prestigious art galleries and progressive art spaces.

He lives and works in Paris.

BABOU

Babou is an iconic figure in street art and is a graffiti activist in Paris since 1985. Sculptor and urban artist, his practice focuses on the atmosphere and the gesture of the tag. His images seek to recreate the energy and movement of the street, using the city walls as canvas and transforming them into images that question the contemporary Dasein.

BENJAMIN LAADING

Benjamin Laading creates a fresh vision of graffiti with his technical repetition of dots. It celebrates accidentality, degradation, and vandalism, all these undesirable manifestations which disturb the monotony of a functional and controlled environment. His work is like a window between two worlds, which reflects an inner conflict between instinct and reason, which is present in every one of us.

CLYDE KNOWLAND

Clyde Knowland finalized a painting technique halfway between calligraphy and drawing. His very gestural work tends to reproduce in an almost abstract way what he calls “an urban jungle” and its energy. Sometimes totems or tribal figures come out of his paintings as buildings and skyscrapers, to give life to these chaotic and inhuman landscapes.

CT

For over a decade, CT has been internationally active with urban art projects. His style has transitioned from a classic graffiti wild style into contemporary minimalism. Working in abandoned and lost spaces, CT searches for the perfect canvas that has the potential to create a contrast from his minimal mark. Graffiti minimalism, a deconstructed form taken to its most basic embodiment while still maintaining its initial concept of letter structure.

PAROLE

Parole is a self-educated artist whose work is multi-faceted, at the crossroads of culture, and draws upon the use of many skills and tools. He developed spontaneous writings where he twists, reforms, and mixes up the letters enough to make them illegible. There are spiritual and sacred feelings and meanings in these writings and in its relationship with art and with life.

SUN7

Born in 1977. Jonas Bournat a.k.a. SUN 7 lives and works in Paris. He is obviously a child of crossing of word and image, poetry and color, art and street. His art consists of portraits and coded texts creating a subtle play of appearance/disappearance, in which everything related to calligraphy, glyphs and ideograms becomes as unreal as can be, nurturing a sense of mystery. Jonas Sun7’s work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and art fairs since 1997. His work has been exposed in places such as Grand Palais, Fondation Cartier, Espace Louis Vuitton and Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

TANC

Tancrède Perrot aka Tanc is an abstract graffiti artist who lives and works in Paris. His unique art is about lines, vibrations and repetition. His work is a mix of tags, of individuals, of music which do not seek perfection, but spontaneity. He is part of a new generation of street artists who are exploring the crossroads of graffiti, action painting and optic art. He is able to touch the viewer in an intimate and immediate way through his action and energy.

VALERIE NEWLAND

Born in 1975. Lives and works in Paris and New Caledonia. Under her classic influences, she was able to discover different media and the city under an other angle. She evolved in her work of plastic art because of her curiosity and her willingness to understand the energy of other disciplines. She has a minimalist approach and it is the moment of seizure of the space, the canvas, the fluid structure, that attracts her more than the paintbrushes.

GOAT + Crème de Hassan

Milk Me presents :

GOAT (JP )

Guitar, saxophone, bass and drums. Disregarding the musical scale of instruments as much as possible, the band creates songs that consist of noise and muted sounds that are produced when sound is emitted. The trance and fatigue brought about from relentless repetition and the melody-like sounds that comprise harmonics outside the twelve-tone are both urban and tribal at the same time.

CRÈME de HASSAN (BER)

Deep Space/Death Funk
CdH is a collaborative effort and project of Paul LaBrecque (Head of Wantastiquet, Sunburned Hands of the Man) and Ghazi Barakat (Pharoah Chromium) that explores ethno-logical material in long, enigmatic sound-fictional excursions using guitars as machetes and electronics/synths/samples as a flashlight to illuminate creatures of the past and future lurking in the shadows.
They will release their first album on the British label INVERSIONS early 2017
