Urban Spree Galerie presents “Explorations“, the first solo show of the Krakow-based calligraffiti painter SICOER in Berlin.
“Explorations” – initially due to open in March 2020 – is the outcome of several one-week working sessions at Urban Spree in Berlin during the months of January and February 2020, interspersed with intense studio time in Krakow during the lockdown.
The Covid-19 closed the borders and the artist found himself in an unexpected form of retreat and focused entirely on his art, endlessly experimenting, finding new tools, new ways of expression and ultimately discovering a more abstract part of his work which is giving a new direction to the show.
Sicoer is a calligraffiti painter based in Krakow well known for his vandal graffiti as well as his handstyle studio works. Having started graffiti in 1998 and still active nowadays, Sicoer created in parallel a studio practice based on the combination of letters, geometric compositions, flow and a limited use of color range. Relentlessly exploring, Sicoer turned recently his graphic experiments towards calligraffiti abstraction.
Urban Spree Galerie presents “Explorations“, the first solo show of the Krakow-based calligraffiti painter SICOER in Germany. “Calligraffiti” is a portmanteau word combining the art of calligraphy with elements of graffiti. It is a non-classical calligraphic discipline, modeled by the street and the parallel practice of graffiti.
“Explorations” is the outcome of several working sessions at Urban Spree Berlin in January, February, and June 2020, interspersed with intense studio time in Krakow during the lockdown, resulting in an unexpected dialogue in time and space.
For this 6-month residency, Sicoer has conducted extensive research and experiments about form and flow, perfecting structure, balance, colors, texture, free flow and ultimately stripping down his technique to the simple expression of one brushstroke, a fragment of the whole universe, a distillation of years of lettering practice.
“Explorations” is the outcome of a spiritual journey through letters. Sicoer has built over time elements of an abstracted language, an ever-morphing alphabet derived from the old Slavic scriptures, rooted in the Eastern part of Europe and universal at the same time.

Having started graffiti in 1998 and still active nowadays, Sicoer created in parallel a studio practice based on the combination of letters, geometric compositions, flow and a specific use of color range. Relentlessly exploring, Sicoer turned recently his graphic experiments towards even more calligraffitic abstraction.

Just before the official kickoff of our Still STAND project where 4 applications to paint the Urban Spree Artist Wall have been selected – out of 89 submissions – and will unfold over the course of June and July 2020, both Johannes Mundinger and Señor Schnu wanted to give a face lift to the wall after a long winter, and Corona oblige, actually much longer than we had anticipated.
Johannes Mundinger painted the large wall at Urban Spree mid-April 2020 (his third take on the wall, setting thereby a new record) with an abstract composition in tune with the “Leave No One Behind” campaign to repatriate refugee children from camps in Greece.
Shortly after, Señor Schnu took over the Wall with a vibrant composition assembling different elements from propaganda, economics, and positive symbols to make a statement: “We can’t return to normal, because the normal we had was precisely the problem” or how legitimate aspirations to “get back to normal” owing to the corona crisis must instead give way to healthier relationships and a different way to create social links.
As the Still STAND team started to get together for the first upcoming wall of the project, our drone photographer, Lukas Stiller, managed to take spectacular shots of the wall at dusk.

Tot Onyx (Tommy Tokyo group A) –
Out of the darkness emerged ReveRso. The creation myth of a megalomaniac marred on its own venom: a fetishistic cannibal-of-self bound in love, loss, seduction, salvation, madness, prophecy and pain. Currently based in Berlin, ReveRso has massacred crowds on stages (and in alleyways) from Europe to America. A junky, he must devour the public to feel the light, his rite of purification through the shadows. To Repent to the name of no other but He ☦ ReveRso.
The one thing you can’t escape on BAMBARAS Stray is the blunt death. It is everywhere and inevitable, abstract and personified – perhaps the key to the whole record. Let yourself be surprised by the other companions of death on the meanwhile 4th album.
Bambara, consisting of twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh and William Brookshire from Athens, Georgia, have pushed their midnight sound further into the black depths of being since the release of their debut “Dreamviolence” in 2013.
It would be too easy to call “Stray” the “soundtrack of the graveyard”. You just finally did exactly what you had been after all along! The result is an exciting game between life and death!
Urban Spree Galerie presents “The be(Longing)”, the 3rd solo exhibition of Tel-Aviv based artist Igor Revelis a.k.a. Klone with Urban Spree Galerie.
After a decade exploring the medium of paper, “The be(Longing)” marks the return of the artist to the medium of canvas. Bringing his spray can technique of shadows and gradients to perfection, Klone paints monochrome compositions where the matter of the canvas blends into geometric shapes and abstract landscapes.
“The be(Longing) is an investigation of hybrid identity, a portal into a parallel realm tucked away from the increasingly globalized and visually homologized world. Set against the backdrop of dark gallery walls, restless portraits and landscapes can be peered at, stripped of all contextual clues, the painful human relation between object-subject tugs at the primal root of abstraction. There are no nouns in this landscape, everything is a verb, the gaze is an action.” Mika Bar-On Nesher
A few signed copies of the latest artist’s monograph – “FEWMOMENTSAGOIWASHERE”, looking over the last 8 years of exhibitions, mural projects, installation, and animations, will be available at the opening.
Klone (b.1983) is an Ukrianian-born, Tel-Aviv based street artist, a pioneer of graffiti in Israel and a visual artist
