Urban Spree Galerie presents Jim Avignon at Berliner Liste

During the Berlin Art Week (14-17 September 2017) and in addition to the « Metamorphosis » exhibition currently on display at the galerie, Urban Spree presents a solo show of Jim Avignon at the Berliner Liste in Postbahnhof.

Under the title « Permanent Hello« , the Berlin-based artist develops the themes of his previous show at Urban Spree called « Permanent Jetlag » around internet and the overconsumption of images around paintings and large-scale interactive installations.

Jim Avignon‘s body of work for « Permanent Hello“ is about the balancing act of virtual life and real life. He depicts how the internet and social media have gradually changed society, and he also addresses our tragic, and often comical attempts to keep up with technology. On the one hand the world is getting smaller yet in our minds it keeps getting bigger, making it difficult to be everywhere at the same time.

Avignon’s narrative motives are a potpourri of political and societal topics, art, pop culture and characters from fairytales and fables. His paintings and installations serve as a stage for diverse protagonists from figuration, cartoons, anime and a fantasy world. Animals embody the human condition while the unknown lurks behind a façade of cheerfulness.

In Avignon‘s fantasy world, interchangeable freaks from the catalogue of postmodern society stand around, as their lively inanimate facial expressions reveal a mix of emotions, boredom, indecisiveness and resignation.

Sampling, cover versions and epiphenomena, like gamification, are central concepts in his creative work, they are references to the conflicting poles of visual art, music, mass media and the industry.

Jim Avignon has been living and working in Berlin for more than 20 years. In the 1990s he adorned clubs with his decorations and became known as the ‚painter of the techno scene‘. In 2013 he unleashed controversy when he staged a flashmob to paint over his landmark mural on the East Side Gallery without permission. Velocity and change have always been key issues in his creative work. The title of one of his first exhibitions was “highspeedworld.” In 1993 he already titled a painting “spoilsport in the internet.”

Trashfest 10th Anniversary

It is with with great joy, honour and anticipation that we announce the 10th Anniversary of Berlin’s weirdest, wildest, and most legendary festival, TRASHFEST.

FULL LINEUP ANNOUNCED:

BANDS:
Freak de l’Afrique (Berlin/ Man Recordings)
Conjunto Papa Upa (Venezuela/Amsterdam, Names You Can Trust)
Scúru Fitchádu (Cabo Verde/Lisbon)
Mfa Kera and Mike Russell’s Black Heritage (Madagascar/USA/Berlin)
Conjunto Vaya Nacho (Berlin)

DJS:
Dj Anacaona (Caracas)
j.do rio aka João Xavi (Rio de Janeiro)
Sigourney Skywalker (Berlin)
Dj Andi Stetcher aka Schladi Schladez (Berlin)
Mohair Sam (Thessaloniki)
Mayo-Ra (Spaghetti Western)
Send the Friend (Thessaloniki)
NESTA (PT)
Jimmy Trash (AUS)

Freak de l’Afrique is a Berlin based collective of Djs, Mcs and dancers who share a passion for modern African Club sounds. They are an energy EXPLOSION and full of legendary creatives and have worked alongside Goethe Institute and Redbull to be able to tour East Africa and Europe and spread their floor burning vibes.

Conjunto Papa Upa is the latest band by « The Hardest Working Man in Tropical Music » Alex Figueira (Fumaça Preta, Music With Soul, VintageVoudou), alongside percussion meister Gerardo Rosales. Papa Upa is a latin rhythm machine, dipping into the grooviest parts of Venezuelan Afro, Salsa and Carribean heritage and then wrung through the psychedelic and dj culture processor you can expect from a Names You Can Trust band.

Scúru Fitchádu
Mixing anti-colonial punk politics, live and programmed drums and exceptional stage shows with the ancient rhythms of funana, the outlawed and ancient music from Cabo Verde, Scuru Fitchadu feels like Death Grips if they grew up inthe island pennisula…..It’s their first gig in Berlin and we are honoured to host them.

Mfa Kera with Mike Russell and Black Heritage
Some years ago I was digging in Amsterdam and found an amazing LP with an astonishing face of the artist on the front cover. It was the amazing Mfa Kera, who I interpreted to be something like a Madagascan answer to Nina Hagen…. and it quickly became my favourite new wave album of all time. A little investigation found she was living in Berlin, and still going very strong with many musical and artistic projects. I’ll post more of this story later but for now, I am BURSTING to present to our Trashfest audience, MFA KERA will be performing with a full afrobeat band!!!

Conjunto Vaya Nacho This Band is based on the affection of Colombian Vallenato Music. Rocking an accordeon, bass, 1973 drum machine and guest singers, we are very happy to have these locals join us.

j.do Rio aka João Xavi
I have a perverse pleasure in the wild in-yo-face electric boogaloo of 80s-90s Baille Funk and Miami Bass, so I personally invited specialist J.do Rio aka João Xavi of Batuque Lowfi. He has made a mix just for us, listen and wig out and understand how fun this will be in the Urban Spree basement on the night of Trashfest !!!

Dj Anacaona is also a Venezuelan émigré to Berlin’s tropical music scene with connections to the La Regla Party here. After being in all of the rebellious music scenes of vibrant Caracas; Hardcore, Reggae, Hip Hop – she brings the same attitude to her heavy bomb salsa mixes which you have to hear to believe.

Dj Andi Stetcher (Schladi Schladez)
Andi Stecher is an austrian born and berlin based drummer and electronic musicia and DJ Andi Stechers music is not drawn to one specific genre. He refers to a variety of styles of music in his pieces and therefore forms a very unique hybrid sound. His music is often interspersed with polyrhythmic elements, field recordings, coupled with drones, subbass, analog electronics and electroacoustic elements.

We are deeply indebted to Musicboard Berlin for helping us to set up this incredible event, as well as our longterm partners Urban Spree.

Forensics presents Automelodi & Luminance

Forensics presents Automelodi and Luminance live in Berlin

【 LIVE 】

Automelodi [Montréal]

Automelodi is Montréal based producer and
songwriter Xavier Paradis, whose 2013 full-length
Surlendemains Acides remains one of the most well
produced and memorable synth-based works of the
modern era.

On March 30, 2018 Holodeck Records is
proud to reissue this evocative collection of songs on
LP, cassette and digital download. Delivered in
French, Automelodi is the result of Paradis’ passion
for analog electronics and devotion to brooding pop
sensibilities. Surlendemains Acides has been out of
print for several years, and now to the delight of
hardware enthusiasts and fans alike, this classic is
given a second life.

Paradis is a well-established figure in Montréal’s
dense electronic music culture, and Automelodi has
become one of the most innovative projects to come
out of the region that has produced pioneers like
Marie Davidson and Tim Hecker. Paradis shows the
exquisite ability to arrange with a careful ear for
texture, forming each song element with rich
expression and character. His process of composing
with analog synthesizers and drum machines like the
Moog MG-1 and the Roland TR-808 is used in
combination with field recorded “found sound”
allowing Paradis to write with a palate that is
aesthetically wide-ranging but chosen with precision.
Paradis’ persona as a weary romantic is at the heart
of Surlendemains Acides and extends well beyond
the studio. Paradis’ charm and sleek aesthetic
translate smoothly to his live show and music videos,
with swaggering stage presence and seductive
dance moves.

Automelodi is internationally recognized in
underground electronic circles as an artist of the
highest caliber with an inspiring but rare discography.
Holodeck is honored to work with Automelodi and
add Surlendemains Acides to its catalog.

Luminance [Brussels]

LUMINANCE is a project of DA (also guitarist of band Soror Dolorosa), founded in Brussels in 2012 .
The music is a mix of new wave , synthpop , electronic with cold and cloudy vibes floating around it, inspired by cold wave, synthpop, post punk, and all kinds of music from the 80’s but definitely bathing in the present moment.
Echoing drums in the distance, vaporous winds bearing the old voices, here to guide us through the coldness of the city, towards the ancestral light.

Aurelia Dinamita (Trash Me / Dis/Tanz) [Berlin]

Dinamita: third person singular, present simple. The event promoter and DJ Aurelia Dinamita (Trash Me, Dis/Tanz) has been enabling controlled explosions through her wave and post-punk sets that can induce to unpredictable states of stomp-dancing.

Aurelia started setting up fundraising events at underground squats that were summits where post-punk and wave joint forces along with queer and feminist politics. So much so that Trash Me, an event which had its sibling in Madrid at Sala Maravillas, was where she established herself as a DJ together with Schatten Voraus, her partner at the decks. Eventually, Trash Me became a bigger concept together with Dis/Tanz, a collective that throws sexpositive feminist soliparties.

As Amperia, she buries souls with rough industrial sets. Under this moniker, she is in charge of Autopoiesis together with dj Vela, which takes place at another berliner time hole, the notorious ://about blank.
