Pharmakon – Urban Spree, Berlin

New date!
Moved from April 18th to Dec 9th.

Doors: 20h, Start: 20h45.

“Devour” marks the fourth full-length record from New York City based artist Margaret Chardiet’s project Pharmakon and the most intense output of her 12 plus years creating industrial noise. Like her previous albums, Devour comes with a strong concept that is exorcised throughout the five demolishing tracks on the album, using imagery and language of self-cannibalism as allegory for the self-destructive nature of humans. Each of the five songs echoes a stage of grief associated with this cyclical chamber of self-destruction and the chaos surrounding us that leads us to devour ourselves in an attempt to balance the agony.

The album was recorded by Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and is the first Pharmakon album recorded live in studio. The A and B sides were each recorded as a continuous take with vocals from start to finish, marking a totally new process for the artist that allows the ferocity and immediacy of her live performance to resonate throughout. Devour also explores new sonic territory, with denser electronics, groovier hooks, and moments of her most unhinged vocal deliveries to date. As one of the premiere vanguards of modern industrial and power electronics, Chardiet continuously pushes the genres and everyone involved in them, and with the release of Devour, she has once again changed the game.

Along with cleaner, new production values, their brand new album “All Or Nothing” (out on February 7th, 2020 on FatCat) sees Shopping experiment further with the sonic additions that coloured The Official Body. Jubilantly ‘80s synths and electronic percussion add new textures to their signature minimalist dynamic, flourishes that show up on the accelerating zooms of ‘Follow Me’ and the frenetic, propulsive robotics of ‘For Your Pleasure’. “We introduced both of these sounds on the last album and just decided to be more liberal with them this time,” explains Easter. Aggs – feted for her dexterous, Highlife-inspired fret work – went so far as to down guitars for a number of tracks (‘For Your Pleasure’, ‘Follow Me’, ‘Lies’). “It’s been so fun developing quite a specific guitar style within Shopping, but I think we were all getting a little sick of it to be honest! It felt very stale to just have every song be the same formula so I’m glad we did away with the guitar for a few songs.”

————————————————————————-
Emerging from the DIY underground of Barcelona, Belgrado initially traded in a stylish mixture of post-punk tropes that could be traced back to the Europe of the early 1980s. Formed in 2010, Barcelona-based outfit Belgrado has existed at the innovative forefront of the global post-punk scene. Now in their ninth year, the quartet continues to play at home and abroad, carrying with them a reputation built on three full length albums and an impressive touring career that has taken them to all corners of the globe.

The tale is perhaps a well-precedented one: a Welshman, an American, and a Swede move to Berlin and start a post-punk band called PLATTENBAU in a studio housed in the massive former DDR Funkhaus. Hans Tobias, Lewis Lloyd und Brandon Walsh describe their very own sonic can of worms as post-ideological surrealism, the ten songs on their self-titled debut album oscillate between noise, pop and surf.

German duo COMA’s upcoming album, “Voyage Voyage” is set for release via City Slang on 22nd November. Across its ten tracks, the pair meld piano, guitar, drums, synths and electronic flourishes to futuristic vocal harmonies that amp up the melancholic pop factor and capture life’s fleeting moments and adventures.

Fusing a pop sensibility with dance music’s communal properties, COMA – AKA Georg Conrad and Marius Bubat – create music rich in melody and often melancholy, their repertoire occupying an emotionally-driven corner of the electronic music spectrum, where dynamic soundscapes collide with honest lyrics.

Pale Honey + Tiny Deaths | Berlin

Pale Honey
+ tiny deaths
30.10. Berlin, Urban Spree
Admission 7:00. Start 8:00.

PALE HONEY
Pale Honey are Tuva Lodmark (guitar and vocals) and Nelly Daltrey (drums). Their debut EP ‘Fiction’ quickly attracted attention and led to festival shows in Germany and the UK, followed by a longer European tour in spring 2015. In May of the same year, the band released their self-titled debut album ‘Pale Honey’, which was highly acclaimed both internationally and at home in Sweden. The band was featured in a variety of prestigious media including Line of Best Fit, Stereogum and Consequence of Sound.

They were also called “Breaking Act” in the British Sunday Times: “Tuva Lodmark and Nelly Daltrey eschew the synth pop most often associated with their country, favouriting instead a White-Stripesian voice-drums-guitar spareness, with a plinky keyboard sometimes thrown in, that suddenly explodes into violentcolour… brilliant”.

Pale Honey were nominated in the category “Newcomer of the Year” at the P3 Goldgala in Sweden after the release of their debut album, and also in three categories at the Swedish Gaffa Prize. The second album “Devotion” was released in 2017, followed by tours in Scandinavia, Great Britain and Germany and several summer festivals (such as Roskilde). The singles “Get These Things Out Of my Head” and the ABBA cover “Lay All Your Love On Me” were played on high rotation in Sweden and Denmark and also received strong support from Spotify.

“Devotion” was nominated at the P3 Goldgala in Sweden and the band won a prize for the album at the Swedish Manifest Galan. The band is now in the studio working on their third album which will be released in early 2020.

TINY DEATHS
Tiny Deaths is a dream pop duo from Minneapolis and Brooklyn, consisting of singer Claire de Lune and producer Grant Cutler. Their debut album “Elegies” was released by de Lune and Cutler in February 2017. Tastemakers like Stereogum, The Guardian or PopMatters quickly became aware of the duo. Their sound reminds of bands like Beach House, Phantogram or Purity Ring. The two musicians couldn’t be more different. Cutler has a background as an electronic and ambient producer, while de Lune has more RnB influences. Together they create a unique sound of powerful basses and soulful vocals.

MOLCHAT DOMA
Detriti Records
Minsk, Belarus

Molchat Doma (translated as “Silent Houses”), founded in 2017 in Minsk, Belarus, stands at the intersection of post-punk, new-wave and synth-pop. Dark yet danceable, and with a heavy dose of goth ethos, their music is reminiscent of the masters that predate them, but make no mistake: Molchat Doma creates a sound and meaning that is immediately recognizable as all their own.

The band is comprised of Egor Shkutko, who sings the Russian lyrics in his deep monotone, Roman Komogortsev on guitar, synths, and drum machine, and Pavel Kozlov on bass and synths.

Their second LP, Этажи (pronounced Etazhi, meaning “Floors”) was released in 2018 on Berlin-based Detriti Records. It has sold out four times and is currently on its fifth repressing due to outstanding demand. Этажи has garnered over one million views on Youtube.
