Upcoming solo show: Futura “The 5 Elements

Urban Spree Galerie and Art-Together are proud to announce “Futura: The 5 Elements”, a solo exhibition of new works by Lenny McGurr, a.k.a. Futura 2000.

The Opening Reception will be held in Berlin on Friday January 11th, 2019, in presence of the artist, at Urban Spree Galerie.

The exhibition is one of the largest solo exhibitions of Futura to date with more than 60 original paintings on display.

“The 5 Elements” is not a retrospective show. On the contrary, Futura worked specifically on a large museum-style conceptual exhibition, tackling the ambitious theme of the Creation of the Universe, confronting himself to the cosmos, the planets, the infinitely small, the Big Bang and the fundamental elements, producing a corpus of works that becomes a path to the exploration of the universe as well as providing a backdoor into Futura’s internal galaxy.

The works have been produced in early 2018 in Lille, France, during a  residency organized by Art-Together, a newly launched ambitious platform for the development of urban contemporary arts.

A set of 4 silk screen prints are being released on the Opening Night. The set is based on the painting series “Pure”. Each 8-color screen print is hand-pulled by Dolly Demoratti (Mother Drucker/Urban Spree Studio), signed and numbered by Futura. The 50 x 50 cm prints are only sold as a limited edition of 100 sets.

A 128-page companion book titled “Futura, les 5 éléments”, will also be released in Berlin on the Opening Night and will be signed by the artist. More than an exhibition catalogue, the book intends to share the creative path of the residency and provides scientific guidance to the series of paintings.

About the artist:

Futura is an American visual artist, born Lenny McGurr in NYC in 1955. He is recognized as one of the first modern-era graffiti writers, and the pioneer of the abstract graffiti genre. Passionate about science fiction, he chose his moniker “Futura 2000” when he started graffiti at 15 in reference to Stanley Kubrick’s movie “2001 – A Space Odyssey”.

He started painting the NYC subways in the 1970s and was the first writer to paint a whole car in the abstract graffiti style which became his signature. He was part of the famed exhibition “New York/New Wave” in 1981 at the P.S.1 (Institute for Art and Urban Resources, Inc.) together with Basquiat (a.k.a. SAMO), Haring, Blade, Crash, Quik, Dondi and Kenny Scharf. Futura has often collaborated with music labels and bands  (The Clash, Unkle) and is quite active in streetwear (collaborations with Nike, Supreme, Converse, Bape, Stussy…), toys (Medicom), and also though his own brand, Futura Laboratories. He had numerous solo and group exhibitions and is widely collected.

Sicoer: Explorations

Urban Spree Galerie presents “Explorations“, the first solo show of the Krakow-based calligraffiti painter SICOER in Germany. “Calligraffiti” is a portmanteau word combining the art of calligraphy with elements of graffiti. It is a non-classical calligraphic discipline, modeled by the street and the parallel practice of graffiti.

“Explorations” is the outcome of several working sessions at Urban Spree Berlin in January, February, and June 2020, interspersed with intense studio time in Krakow during the lockdown, resulting in an unexpected dialogue in time and space.

For this 6-month residency, Sicoer has conducted extensive research and experiments about form and flow, perfecting structure, balance, colors, texture, free flow and ultimately stripping down his technique to the simple expression of one brushstroke, a fragment of the whole universe, a distillation of years of lettering practice.

“Explorations” is the outcome of a spiritual journey through letters. Sicoer has built over time elements of an abstracted language, an ever-morphing alphabet derived from the old Slavic scriptures, rooted in the Eastern part of Europe and universal at the same time.

Sicoer is a calligraffiti painter based in Krakow well known for his vandal graffiti as well as his handstyle studio works. Having started graffiti in 1998 and still active nowadays, Sicoer created in parallel a studio practice based on the combination of letters, geometric compositions, flow and a specific use of color range. Relentlessly exploring, Sicoer turned recently his graphic experiments towards even more calligraffitic abstraction.

#StillSTAND Project’s Vorspiel: Johannes Mundinger and Señor Schnu

Just before the official kickoff of our Still STAND project where 4 applications to paint the Urban Spree Artist Wall have been selected – out of 89 submissions – and will unfold over the course of June and July 2020, both Johannes Mundinger and Señor Schnu wanted to give a face lift to the wall after a long winter, and Corona oblige, actually much longer than we had anticipated.

Johannes Mundinger at Urban Spree, April 2020

Johannes Mundinger painted the large wall at Urban Spree mid-April 2020 (his third take on the wall, setting thereby a new record) with an abstract composition in tune with the “Leave No One Behind” campaign to repatriate refugee children from camps in Greece.

Shortly after, Señor Schnu took over the Wall with a vibrant composition assembling different elements from propaganda, economics, and positive symbols to make a statement: “We can’t return to normal, because the normal we had was precisely the problem” or how legitimate aspirations to “get back to normal” owing to the corona crisis must instead give way to healthier relationships and a different way to create social links.

As the Still STAND team started to get together for the first upcoming wall of the project, our drone photographer, Lukas Stiller, managed to take spectacular shots of the wall at dusk.

First Show of 2020: “WALLS” A Collective Exhibition Featuring 30 International Artists

For their first show of 2020, Urban Spree Galerie presents « WALLS », a collective exhibition featuring 30 international artists.

Expanding the historical timeline and geographical scope beyond the Fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago, “WALLS” explores the notion of the wall, from Antiquity to contemporary issues, viewed through the lens of artists committed to the public space and whose work is closely related to walls.

Curated by Fabrice Douar and Cyrille Gouyette (Le Louvre Museum, Paris) and co-curated by Pascal Feucher (Urban Spree Galerie, Berlin), « WALLS » invites prominent artists from the comics & street art scenes to create graphic works of fiction related to walls, interpreted either as simple architectural elements, ominous symbols of segregation, canvases and vessels to convey meaning, textures, or imaginary playgrounds and labyrinths.

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada. Painting on a fragment of a wall

While some antique artefacts appear in the show to testify of their immortal, silent presence, in the 21st Century, the Minotaur doesn’t wait at the center of his realm but has clearly moved outside, demultiplied its presence, and is building more walls.

The exhibition’s direction is therefore resolutely multifaceted, contemporary and graphic-oriented, spanning several topographies (Europe, South Korea, Middle East, Hong Kong, Cuba…), and art forms (painting, photography, installations, videos).
