September 2014: DUBL TRUBL

Using only 3 colors (black, white, power yellow), the Dubl Trubl collective repainted the whole Urban Spree compound mid-september in just a few days. The Urban Spree Artist Wall was painted by Aeon (the 2 mustachioed 70s haircut aussie weirdos), Darren John (lettering), Dscreet (martial arts owl), double dragon Reka (Super Kotti vs. Punky Warschauer) & Paul Insect (the stoned little dudes on the bottom sides). Arm Wrestling tattoos provided by Cone and Sumo.

Rare Shots on Planet X

Our friend & Urban Spree homie Matthias Gephart is launching a crowdfunding campaign about his book project « Rare Shots on Planet X ».

« Rare Shots on Planet X » is Matthias’ first monograph. Due for publication at the end of summer by renowned Dortmund-based art press « Verlag Kettler« , RSPX is an artist’s book engineered by the artist himself, with prime materials retracing the profuse and diverse career of the artist in illustration, typography & lettering, graffiti, collage, screen prints, and photography, up to this point in time.

Matthias is launching a crowd funding campaign to make this publication happening.

Urban Spree is officially supporting the book project and we recommend our readers to pre-order the book and therefore support this great publishing project.

Details on the funding project here on the startnext.de website.

Sign Painting Workshop with Mike Meyer & Ash Bishop

L1001401Last November, Mike Meyer (USA) and Ash Bishop (UK) were in Berlin for the Premiere of the well attended « Sign Painters » movie at Urban Spree and delivered at the same occasion a very successful brush lettering/sign painting workshop for 2 entire days.

After the success of this initial workshop, Make! Skilled Hands are luckily organizing a second session with the same duo of craftsmen. The 2-day session will be held once again at Urban Spree and we advise you to book your seat fast as the attendance is limited and the demand high.

All info are on the Make! Skilled Hands’ blog here.

Berlin Premiere of the 'Sign Painter' Movie + Workshop

SignPainterMoviePosterMake! Skilled Hands and Urban Spree invite you to the Berlin Premiere of ‘Sign Painters‘, a documentary movie about the art of hand-sign painting. The screening will be enhanced by a special brush lettering workshop with veteran Mike Meyer, also featured in the movie and exceptionally present in Berlin.

The screening will be followed by a party with Urban Spree good buddies Diskorobot (Klub7) and Efalive of the Jazoburbs, and you can always count on their immense vinyl skills to make it funky, groovy, disko and full of good vibes.

There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade.

In 2010 filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon began documenting these dedicated practitioners, their time-honored methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Sign Painters, the first anecdotal history of the craft, features the stories of more than two dozen sign painters working in cities throughout the United States. The documentary and book profiles sign painters young and old, from the new vanguard working solo to collaborative shops such as San Francisco’s New Bohemia Signs and New York’s Colossal Media’s Sky High Murals.
