Lars Wunderlich: Noborderland

Lars Wunderlich's painting "Noborderland" is a bold conceptual composition and "mise en abyme"  As usual with the painter, glitches and distorsions signal a time warp, a collision through eras but also signify that history can repeat itself. As a painter who grew up in East Germany, Wunderlich is particularly sensitive to the theme of the wall.

The white letters "39/60" at the bottom of the painting refer to the "Schießbefehl" or "order to fire" that East German border troops had to execute from 1960 to 1989 should someone tries to escape, an order carried on by the Roman Empire troops along the Barbarian border in the German limes 2000 years ago...(top right of the painting).
The painting also refers to the Palestine Wall, the East and West Germany borders (separated by a forest) and the Paris urban highway "Le Périphérique", the ultimate city border.

The painting itself is executed as a mural, painted on a prototype of a wall submitted for the Mexico-US border to Donald Trump.
