'Simon Torssell Lerin / Bettina Hvidevold Hystad with Damo Suzuki' is a biographical photobook with private and previously unpublished photos from the early 70s and today. It also contains excerpts from private letters, lyrics, drawings and emails by Damo Suzuki and newspaper articles about him.
Simon Torssell Lerin and Bettina Hvidevold Hystad have undertaken a cultural pilgrimage in the footsteps of the legendary CAN singer, Damo Suzuki. From placing a classifed advertisement in a Swedish newspaper, Suzuki leaves Japan in early 1968 ending up in the village of Gräsmark. Lerin / Hystad´s book documents what happened to Suzuki in Gräsmark and how he kept in contact with his Swedish friends after becoming a member of the krautrock band CAN. During the summer of 2012 Lerin / Hystad travelled together with Suzuki to Japan exploring ideas of improvisation and music as a platform for communication by documenting Damo Suzuki's Network´s tour. On the 11th of February 2013 the duo performed an improvised concert together with Suzuki at Fylkingen, Stockholm.
When Suzuki tours, he only performs live improvisational music with various local musicians (so-called “Sound Carriers”) from around the world, thus building up a ‘network’ of musicians with whom he collaborates.
This boxset is being released on Dec. 13th, 2013 by the Hamburg-based Clouds Hill Records and contains a photobook which presents Suzuki & the duo's journey together as well as a live recording of their performance at Fylkingen pressed on a 180-gram white vinyl. Since Damo Suzuki decided not to do studio work but rather perform with his Network, there are no recordings available anymore.
Damo Suzuki played live at Urban Spree the next day following the release of the box edition. For the Berlin date at Urban Spree on , Damo Suzuki had invited no less than 2 members of retro-stoner rock band Kadavar (Christoph "Lupus" Lindemann (guitar) & Christoph “Tiger” Bartelt (bass)), Schneider TM, Mulrooney (Dead Skeletons) and In Zaire’s “Thunder“.
