Berlin Heart Beats, subtitled "Stories From the Wild Years 1990-Present", is a testimony on the post-Cold War Berlin. Berlin in the 90´s: The city is no longer an island, old structures dissolve and leave behind new spaces for improvisation and experiment. In the abandoned houses and on the streets the set pieces of past times can be put together to form a new, colorful and often only temporary picture. A time of hope, even if change means an uncertain future for many. But those who dare to make use of the freedoms will find a huge area of possibilities.
This photo essay tells the groundbreaking and the lesser-known, but all the more astonishing stories of Berlin's recent history : New clubs reanimate the nightlife, the homeless theatre "Ratten 07" conquers the stage, the clearing of Mainzer Strasse escalates and dark moments of the recent past come to light in the Kalkandsteinwerk in Rüdersdorf. The photo series are supplemented by conversations with the visionaries, activists and autodidacts who contributed to the emergence of today's Berlin and whose biographies could only be written in the city.
