In line with the thematics of the show, Kid Cash has delivered a powerful mural, painted in the course of a 3-day period on our 15 m x 8 m surface. The mural faces Warschauer Str. in Berlin-Friedrichshain and is the first encounter of the public with Kid Cash’s art yet to be installed in the gallery for the exhibition, making this piece actually the first artwork of the show.

Rafael Sliks in Berlin

Gabriel Sousa from Brazilian filming crew Devir Produções accompanied Rafael Sliks during his Berlin residency and solo exhibition at Urban Spree from 16 to 26 March 2017.

Rafael Sliks is a graffiti and street art artist from São Paulo, Brazil. He’s been doing his works in the streets and showing some of his studio works since 1997. Sliks had participated in festivals and group exhibitions all around the world, such as in Paris, Geneve, Miami, Taiwan and many other places. In March, 2017 the artist started a 2 weeks residency in the Urban Spree Galerie, in Berlin, Germany. The project culminated in Sliks first solo show, “Ambivalence”. The exhibition comes together as a representation of Sliks’ artistic universe, which reflects on the balance between the city chaos and the serenity of nature as the most important sources of inspiration for the artist.

For enquiries about Rafael Sliks’ available artworks, please request the catalogue: galerie@urbanspree.com

Ceci n’est pas un graffiti: Ich bin ein Street Artiste

Berlin and Urban Spree are lengthy featured in the ARTE Creative’s documentary “Ceci n’est pas un graffiti”, written and directed by Jim Gabaret et Samuel Boujnah.

The 10-episode series features the german capital city in its 8th episode, “Ich bin ein Street Artiste”.

Urban Spree and its family of resident artists and artist friends (Rylsee, Johannes Mundinger, Various & Gould, Ben Thé) are largely featured in the documentary and we talk about the special relationship that we have with the city and what makes Urban Spree a kind of unique place.

Kid Cash interviewed by Widewalls ahead of his solo show at Urban Spree

Widewalls has conducted an in-depth interview with Berlin based artist Kid Cash ahead of his solo show at Urban Spree Galerie due to open on March 31st, 2017.

Widewalls: Let’s start with the title of the show at Urban Spree, “Very Necessary”. It points out the necessity of showing street artworks in a gallery context: what can you tell us about this necessity?

KID CASH: At the end of the 1970s, the works of graffiti artists like Dondi, Lady Pink and Futura were exhibited in galleries. From today’s perspective it seems that the undertaking didn’t work. Around 2005 there was a veritable street art boom and again, there was the will to bring art from the streets into galleries. This development is still going on. Some artists have managed to exhibit their works regularly in white-cube galleries. But in my view, their reputation as „being authentic“ results from their work in public spaces. One fundamental finding is for me that it’s hardly possible to bring authenticity from the streets into the gallery. The reason for this is that is very simple: The space is just different. That’s why the artworks in galleries differ so much from those in the streets. I chose this simple fact to become the theme of my exhibition.

I want to describe an example: When I paint on a wall in the street, the wall tells me some stories. It is full of traces and has different surfaces. It is raw, full of holes, rock-hard, sprayed, and also full of insects. On the streets, people just take a glimpse at walls. The viewers pass by quickly and therefore the murals are quickly recognisable. They were painted to be seen from a distance or sometimes only for being photographed only. That’s why they tend to be relatively rough.

In contrast, when I paint on a canvas in my studio, the canvas is usually smaller than the walls outside in the streets. The surface of the canvas is smooth and it gives way. The fine structure is perceptible. At an artwork hanging in a gallery can be looked at from very close and intensively. The exhibition visitors can take a lot of time to look at the artworks (…).

Rafael Sliks concludes his Urban Spree Art Residency by a new show opening

Urban Spree Galerie is pleased to invite you to Rafael Sliks’ solo exhibition “Ambivalence“, which concludes a 2-week art residency in Berlin.

Urban Spree Galerie has invited Brazilian visual and graffiti artist Rafael Sliks in March 2017 as part of its Art Residency Program. During two weeks, the São Paulo-based artist has been creating a series of artworks in Berlin, taking the pulse of the german metropolis.

Sliks’ artistic universe reflects the tension between the physical chaos present in urban areas and the spiritual introspection he experiences in nature. Both being his main sources of inspiration, Rafael Sliks’ art seeks to harmonize and reconcile cities and nature in a single movement, mixing the colors and vision of nature with the ultra-fast movements of his graffiti skills, and vice-versa. Blurring the lines. Ambivalence.

The art of Rafael Sliks originates in graffiti for which he has developed a renowned style made of astro fatcapped tags and throw-ups. His indoor work is fueled by colour, repetition and overlapping tags, music beats, creating visual enigmas and infinite expanses of universe.

About the artist:

Rafael Sliks, born in the Central Region of Sao Paulo, Brazil, began his artistic career in 1997, where he was strongly influenced by the style of letters in the streets. Nowadays, his artworks can be found in streets around the globe. Sliks has also exhibited his art in galleries in the United States, Europe and Australia.

The Urban Spree Art Residency Program invites Berlin-based and international artists to freely experiment at Urban Spree Galerie during intense 2-week indoor and outdoor painting sessions open to the public and leading to exhibitions.
