About the Exhibition
Urban Spree Galerie is proud to announce its upcoming & last exhibition of the year - Elegantly Wasted — Ritter Butzke Berlin - a flagship photographic exhibition curated by Max Dax with black-and-white and color photographs of Ben de Biel.
A companion photobook of the same name is being co-published by Snoeck and Urban Spree and will be released for the show together with a Special Collectors’ Edition of 99 signed and numbered copies and an original c-print by Ben de Biel.
Curated by Max Dax from over 13,000 photos taken from 2009 to 2015, the images depict the true story of one of Berlin’s most influential clubs.
They capture the last nights of the initially illegal club and tell the story of its transformation.
At the invitation of its then owner, Johannes von Jena, de Biel spent almost seven years photographing at Ritter Butzke. He was there so often that the guests no longer perceived him as an outsider with a camera, but as one of their own.
De Biel, himself a former club owner in the early 90s and beyond (Maria am Ostbanhof) achieved what probably no other photographer had before him: his pictures, shot behind closed doors, document not only a time and place, but also a hedonistic attitude toward life that seeks excess and, more often than not, can end in melancholic exhaustion.
The exhibition will be on display from 14.11.2025 to 20.12.2025 at Urban Spree Galerie.

Die Urban Spree Galerie freut sich, ihre kommende und letzte Ausstellung des Jahres anzukündigen: „Elegantly Wasted – Ritter Butzke Berlin“ – eine fulminante Fotoausstellung, kuratiert von Max Dax mit Schwarz-Weiß- und Farbfotografien von Ben de Biel.
Ein Fotobuch mit dem gleichen Titel wird gemeinsam von Snoeck und Urban Spree herausgegeben und zusammen mit einer Sonderausgabe für Sammler zur Ausstellung erscheinen. Diese auf 99 Exemplare limitierte Edition ist numeriert und signiert und kommt mit einem Original-Fotoabzug von Ben de Biel.
Die von Max Dax aus über 13.000 Fotos aus den Jahren 2009 bis 2015 kuratierten Bilder zeigen die wahre Geschichte eines der einflussreichsten Clubs Berlins. Sie halten die ersten Jahre des ursprünglich illegalen Clubs fest und erzählen die Geschichte seines Wandels.
Auf Einladung seines damaligen Besitzers Johannes von Jena fotografierte de Biel fast sieben Jahre lang im Ritter Butzke. Er war so oft dort, dass die Gäste ihn nicht mehr als Außenstehenden mit einer Kamera wahrnahmen, sondern als einen der ihren.
De Biel, selbst ehemaliger Clubbesitzer in den frühen 90er Jahren und darüber hinaus (Maria am Ostbahnhof), gelang etwas, was wahrscheinlich kein anderer Fotograf vor ihm geschafft hatte: Seine hinter verschlossenen Türen aufgenommenen Bilder dokumentieren nicht nur eine Zeit und einen Ort, sondern auch eine hedonistische Lebenseinstellung, die nach Exzessen strebt und oft in melancholischer Erschöpfung endet.
Die Ausstellung ist vom 14.11.2025 bis zum 20.12.2025 in der Urban Spree Galerie zu sehen.
