About the Exhibition

Urban Spree Galerie presents "Unflagging", an exhibition featuring the works of 3 Danish contemporary, post-graffiti visual artists: Anders Reventlov, Niels Bach, and Philip Hedegaard.

The Opening Ceremony will be on Friday, October 10th from 18:00 to 22:00, in presence of the artists.

Unflagging is as personal and uncomprosing as can be. These 3 young Danish artists defy conventions, refuse art washing and plain conformism.

Their art is raw, modelled by graffiti and vivid expressionism, as well as stemming from very organic and primitive matters (the clay, the street, the primitive gesture, the origin).

Through a derivative, obfuscated but hyper fluid form of graffiti, Anders cultivates the Letter, trying to reconnect to the essence of the medium, intertwined with signs and lines. Graffiti culture is not from a single language, its alphabet is what you make of it, therefore it is the constantly evolving prototype of a universal graphic language.

Niels is a raw painter, his works are irregular, torn, rough, colourful but dark and its deep nature is the collage.

Philip works the clay like an organic prime and essential material, the essence of the Earth. He gives birth to fantastic, grotesque and elaborated ceramics, monster-like, primitive.

Artist Biographies

Anders Reventlov (b.1984). Graduated from the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in Aarhus, Denmark (2004-2009), lives currently in Malmo, Sweden.

Anders Reventlov works with the idea of writing as drawing. He works specifically in black and white as a reference to writing and signature writing which often is seen in one color on surface. In a hyper digitalized world, where the individual and human action is reduced to a swipe or a algorithm, Anders is advocating for all of us to take our name and our own handwritten signature back and use it as a tool of personal resistance against the dehumanizing tendencies existing in the world. The handwritten signature is a personal sign and a unique artistic expression that prooves that you are existing and are here right now, writing as Action!  Anders Reventlov works with the tradition of automatic script and his own method referred to as traces of actions, a collage like mapping that collects traces of the handwritten action from surfaces outside, they are captured and set free again as new forms in the artworks to produce his abstract compositions all shapes are based on the characters in the word AGORA. Agora means now in portuguese, a language that Anders Reventlov picked up when he painted in the streets of Rio de janeiro over a period of 2 years. The meaning of the word translates perfectly to the method of Anders Reventlov applying the black ink directly fast and like making a name signature! No time for corrections right here and now.Agora is also the word for the open free public space where democracy was born. Anders received in 2025 the prestigious stipendium from the Danish Art Foundation.

Niels Bach (b.1984) works out of a necessity to create. His art is a way for him to process experiences from a past he no longer remembers, but still exists within him.

Where Niels grew up, no one spoke about the important things in life, only practicalities and what the neighbors were doing. This created an urge in him to create a language, through his art, for what was never put into words in his childhood.

Niels works with his paintings in abstract movements, he never does any preparing before he starts painting, but rather creates through his intuitive actions either on paper or walls. His artistic universe is created when painting. Metaphorically Niels always paints on empty canvas or walls, as this is how he often feels until he starts creating - restless and empty. Something wants out!

Niels creates no contact between his brain and his hand while making art, as this allows for something deep within to emerge. In the process of creating Niels’ actions become a state of being where his actions speak for themselves as something larger takes over. He describes it as a space of emptiness he taps into, nothing can exist here but dead empty space. Niels’ art is a way for him to escape the prison of chatter he grew up in. Every piece is a step closer to freedom, a form a therapy to live a life that is tolerable.

Philip Hedegaard (b. 1992) is a Danish visual artist. In 2019 he started to experiment with ceramics. His powerful form of expression relates him with primitivism, post-graffiti, expressionism, raw art or even children’s art.

"My consciousness often revolves around the themes of death and rebirth, like when a flower dies and is resurrected. Between these two states, I sense a huge force of energy, which I feel we are all a part of.

What fascinates me most about working with clay as a medium is how closely it connects me to both the core of the earth and the infinity of the universe. The clay soil, which has been the foundation of human habitats for thousands of years, from settlements to caves. I draw inspiration from these archaeological excavations, seeking stories and emotions.
It is the elements of the earth, it sits in our bones and gives me pigments to paint with, endless possibilities for shaping, and an endless palette of glaze options. In return, I hope to convey through my art what I hear the sky telling me. I want to inspire my audience to also listen more carefully in silence and not just reproduce the junk we are constantly being filled with.

I am very open to materials in my work and for me the alternation between them is very important for the development of the different media. When I paint, for example, my understanding of sculpture can develop wildly, and also the other way around. I am currently working with clay, painting and braiding of various bark and willow".
