Solo Contemporary and Urban Spree present "Zwischenzeit", the first solo show of the Spanish artist David Morago with Urban Spree Galerie.
In the wake of Morago's neo-pop journey which started with the sold-out show "Glitch" in Madrid, "Zwischenzeit" presents a new body of works on canvas, created during his 4-month Residency at Urban Spree in Berlin.
Morago's works are a visual mash-up, a digestion and re-assemblage of both fragments of Japanese pop culture and abstract motives, united by a subtle and harmonic - almost musical - colour range. The works can be turned upside down, portrait or landscape, up to the viewer's satisfaction, there are no rules here, just freedom of experimentation.

The exhibition marks the return of the artist to the medium of canvas as his previous show was made of of large works on wood. Zwischenzeit consists of 12 canvases of 155 or 160 x 115 cm and one large panoramic work, toned-down, mostly black and white of 340 x 115 cm, one of his largest works to date. This work is pinned on the wall but everything is ready to have it stretched if requested.
A turning point came in 2025, when Morago joined SOLO Contemporary’s artist support programme. During this period, he began developing Glitch, a new series that abandons the descriptive qualities of his earlier work in favour of a language built around colour, fragmentation and formal synthesis. Drawing inspiration from manga and anime, the paintings incorporate typographic fragments, interrupted imagery and ambiguous signs that invite multiple interpretations rather than fixed meanings.
This conceptual evolution is matched by an expanded technical vocabulary. Airbrush, spray paint and pigment transfer become central to Morago’s process, while his shift from wood panels to canvas allows for greater gestural freedom and a more dynamic, spontaneous approach to painting.
The works presented in Zwischenzeit reveal the continued development of this new language. While the earliest paintings in the series recall the repetitive rhythm of books aligned on library shelves, the most recent works demonstrate a clear dialogue with Bauhaus aesthetics. Simplified forms, assertive linear structures and vibrant chromatic relationships evoke the legacy of Josef Albers and his investigations into colour and perception.
Created during Morago’s residency in Berlin, the exhibition reflects the profound influence of place on artistic practice. The city’s light, urban landscape and visual culture have shaped a body of work that could scarcely have emerged elsewhere. More than documenting a geographical displacement, Zwischenzeit explores the notion of transition itself. Its title—German for “in-between time”—refers to a liminal state in which one artistic language has not yet entirely disappeared while another is still taking shape. Rather than presenting a completed transformation, the exhibition invites viewers to witness the process as it unfolds: a suspended moment where uncertainty, experimentation and possibility coexist.
About the artist
David Morago (*1975 in Madrid) holds a Fine Arts degree from the Complutense University of Madrid and has exhibited in Spain and internationally since 1996. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Santander, Vigo, A Coruña, Paris, Lisbon, Athens and Montreal, and has been featured at numerous contemporary art fairs across Europe, North America and Asia. Throughout his career, he has received several prestigious painting and drawing awards, and his work is held in important institutional and private collections. Inrecent years, his practice has evolved from a naturalistic approach towards a more experimental pictorial language centred on abstraction, colour and fragmentation, a transition that culminates in his Glitch series and the exhibition Zwischenzeit.
