About the artists

The legendary photographer Martha Cooper documented the street art of New York’s burgeoning hip-hop scene of the 1970s and ’80s. When she became the first female staff photographer at the New York Post in 1977, she set out to capture the beauty and ingenuity of graffiti art and the innovators behind it, immortalizing their work in photographs of painted subway cars and urban walls. Cooper’s images validated and legitimized graffiti writers at a time when few members of the art establishment celebrated their work. Her hit 1984 photobook Subway Art, made in collaboration with photographer Henry Chalfant, came to be known as the graffiti bible, providing a template for aspiring street artists.

In 2017, the Berlin Kreuzberg crew 1UP embarks Martha Cooper and Berlin-based photographer Ninja K. in a series of underground actions, through tunnels, rooftops, featuring high pressure fire extinguisher tags, roll-downs, roll-ups, street bombings, whole cars and backjumps.

The 1UP crew (One United Power) is a Berlin Kreuzberg based graffiti crew. They are undoubtly the most famous graffiti crew for their international street and train bombing.

Ninja K. is a german photographer with roots in the Hip Hop scene. After organizing numerous events for the scene and working on two books about Hip Hop as editor/writer with Martha Cooper, she started working as a photographer in 2010.
