About

In the summer of 1990, 118 artists from 21 countries designed the Berlin Wall in Berlin-Friedrichshain. The open-air gallery has become world-famous as a symbol of the end of the Cold War. The preservation of the memorial was controversial for a long time: it was not until 2000, when building permits had long since been granted for the Spree land, that Berlin began to preserve the historical traces of division. The book accompanying the Berlin Wall Foundation's exhibition traces the monument's transformation and sheds light on the various uses, appropriations and displacements at this site. In addition, the authors take a look at the future of the East Side Gallery as a place of participation, encounter and engagement with the themes of the Wall, art and the city.
