About
This new book by Larissa Kikol is the result of several years of research into one of her favourite art forms: abstract painting.
Tracing the history of abstract painting from the post-war period to the present day, she looks back at the evolution of this practice and shares her current vision. Freed from political and ideological constraints, abstract painting today embodies artistic autonomy in its purest form. From post-war abstract expressionism to contemporary lightness, Larissa Kikol highlights, through essays and interviews with artists, how this art form has left behind its original narratives to undergo a ‘great reset’.
From the pioneering innovations of artists such as Katharina Grosse and Albert Oehlen to the radically subjectivist approaches of Cecily Brown and André Butzer, via more recent trends such as Dirty Minimalism and Post-Vandalism, this book offers a fascinating insight into a form of painting that places emotion, colour and form at its heart. An inspiring look at the renaissance of abstract art in the 21st century and a new essential reference work for all art lovers.
