MURS: A group show celebrating freedom

Urban Spree Galerie participates this week toMurs, a group show curated by Cyrille Gouyette and Fabrice Douar (Le Louvre Museum, Paris) which premieres at Galerie Huberty & Breyne in Bruxelles on November 9th, 2019.

30 years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the exhibition features 31 artists who pay tribute to those fighting for their freedom and explores the very notion of the “wall”.

The international line-up is a crossover between established comics artists, photographs, and street artists, such as Enki Bilal, Nicolas de Crécy, Ernest Pignon-Ernest, Levalet, Kim Jung Gi...

Urban Spree contributes to the exhibition through 3 Berlin-based artists, ALIAS, EVOL, and Hendrik Czakainski before hosting the show in Berlin from January 17th to February 29th, 2019.

KRAKE FESTIVAL is a festival for challenging electronic music organized by the Berlin based Killekill crew. As the name implies, the festival spreads its tentacles out over multiple days and venues across the city, presenting different styles of music. KRAKE is not about hype, it’s about music, that dares to step off the beaten track, about surprising performances and a down-to-earth attitude, far off the mainstream.

The Krake weekend begins on FRIDAY daytime with the legendary Label & Synth Market, a record fair bringing together almost 100 of Berlin’s underground record labels and a small selection of synth brands to present their products in the lively garden area of Urban Spree. Next to DJ sets and surprise performances rounding off the day, the raffle is a chance to win electronic music production equipment and other cool stuff once again. All profit of the raffle will go to Ickmachwelle, a project which aims to empower and teach people with cognitive disabilities to learn how to make electronic music. Ickmachwelle will also perform live directly after the raffle!
FRIDAY night sets the stage for a series of concerts and performances in pure punk attitude! Dig through wild West-Berlin’s archives of the ‘80s with scene expert Mark Reeder and ‘B- Movie’, followed by a Q&A and dj set with and by the protagonist himself. Synth-punk Petra Flurr & 89st is opening for Schwefelgelb, Berlin’s most prolific duo in classic body music tradition, while The Horrorist is gearing up for one of his raging and devastating live performances.
On top of this we are delving deeper into DIY synth art and Circuit Bending throughout the day and night with Lithuanian Moon Armada being one of the most impressive artists in the field. He builds experimental musical devices using doll heads and other objects to create an unreal and spooky atmosphere and has prepared an installation and a performance for our festival.

Kazumoto Endo \ Facialmess \ MAAAA \ Purgist \ Krube.

Kazumoto Endo (Tokyo, Japan)

Since the mid-’90s, japanese noise artist Kazumoto Endo has released albums and eps under his own name and under the alias KILLER BUG. growing up in the ’80s, endo listened to british bands like THE CURE and THE SMITHS, then got turned on to groups such as PUSSY GALORE and BIG BLACK, and began attending live performances by influential noise bands including HANATARASH and HIJOKAIDAN. Endo was, however, unimpressed with how noise music came across on recordings. He wanted to learn to play something different and so took traditional bolivian music classes. It was during this time that Endo purchased the first noise record he was impressed by: MERZBOW’s Cloud cock 00 ground. Endo began buying equipment and making noise around 1990, in addition to continuing his bolivian music classes. Endo began recording in 1994 under the name KILLER BUG, with his first 7″ released on sweden’s releasing Eskimo label. He performed and recorded as KILLER BUG for a couple of years, but eventually dropped the alias. although he most often performs in Tokyo, Endo has also performed in the U.S., in 1995, 1997 and 2016. KAZUMOTO ENDO/ KILLER BUG has releases on labels from around the world, including releasing eskimo (sweden), self abuse, rrr, pinch- a-loaf (u.s.), alien8 recordings (canada), and freak animal (finland).

FACIALMESS (Tokyo, Japan)
Harsh noise project of british ex-pat Kenny Sanderson. Since 1997, Sanderson has been creating cut up harsh noise consisting of found sounds, industrial loops and stabs of percussion. FACIALMESS has released an impressive array of solo and collaborative efforts including work withwith SICKNESS, BASTARD NOISE, GUILTY CONNECTOR and SUPPRESSION. More recent work can be found on labels such as Opal tapes, Kitty play and No rent records. Effortlessly handling knife edge blasts of noise in between pounding sonic loops, sanderson is a master in the shredding and reassembly of his exclusive brand of cut-up harsh noise.
Expect an unmistakable and unforgettable style, blown-out distorted textures, over-the-top volume, sick high-energy passages, frantic cuts, drills, loops, subtle hints of heavy atmospherics…

MAAAA (Warsaw, Poland)
Russian expat Sergei Hanolainen is the conduit for the well oiled machine that is MAAAA; a critically acclaimed Warsaw based noise project that has undergone years of refinement and as a result, has become to play a pivotal role in the concurrent noise climate. MAAAA’s well rehearsed live shows exhibit merciless deliveries of heavy electronics and dizzying drones that induce a physical response not so dissimilar to G forces. As MAAAA continues to mature, his albums strike a blend of classic, neo and underground styles, of the industrial and of the musique concrète, that are progressive, inspired and precise. It is not often that you see an artist so in touch with their machine.

PURGIST (Kielce, Poland)
Dawid Kowalski is a sound artist, improviser, music publisher, culture animator, live event organizer and art activist specializing in radical avant-garde electronic music. an active member of the polish and international underground music community since the early 2000s. Founder of harshnoise.org (“we fight off tyranny of hate which decimates stupid people!”). PURGIST combines a variety of classic experimental music tropes such as object/tape manipulation, electroacoustic improvisation, industrial noise and combines them with extensive digital post-processing placing the end result in a musical context. PURGIST is an outlet for focused exploration of urban field recordings, digital artifacts, aural atmospherics and disjointed noise dynamics. His vivid, cinematic post- industrial harsh noise works have a prominent conceptual background based on a reflection upon personal vices and self-abusive obsessions.

A strong trio. Grew up together. Long-standing friendships. Shared experience. Rocket engines. Parallel beginnings. Trajectories that have diverged over time, but remain firmly connected, consecrated by the code of graffiti. The No More Crew brotherhood.

An exhibition built around the confrontation of its participants – a trio of friends, all distinct figures, and not only in terms of the Czech art scene. The mutual confrontation comes at no risk. Jan Kaláb, Pasta Oner and Michal Škapa are equals. What they share is tenacity, ambition, drive, vigor, audacity, humor, and every now and then also a wall, as well as mutual friends and their common age. What distinguishes them is their approach, form, tools, the venues of their solo exhibitions, the locations of their respective studios, and the number of their children.

With the soul of an architect, Jan Kaláb easily conquers the third dimension not only in his murals, but also in his canvases. He has grown to embrace the painter within, and although his forte is the creation of objects he has been chiseling away at geometric abstraction, discovering spaces interior and without, regardless of the clichéd expression “that’s been done.”

The same could be said of Pasta Oner. It is possible to cite the clearly visible sources of inspiration, identify the specific paraphrases. Yet one must also take into account the force and accuracy with which he mirrors the conservative Central European mindset. How spot-on is his commentary on the bad habits of consumerism, or the directness with which he tackles the large format through his short post-pop messages.

 

Michal Škapa, by contrast, works with the moment of replication, the multiplication of a graphic element, with a hand patently the descendant of an expert graffiti artist. His style is ornamental, rhythmic, abstract and concrete at the same time. He is the draughtsman of his canvases, the transmitter of symbols, creator of expansive mural-format comics with unsettling subject matter.

The exhibition No More Crew at Urban Spree Galerie presents a trio of disparate and yet splendidly and mutually complementary artists. Their work defies being simply the result of the overused epithet “drawing on street art”, and at the same time any confrontation with their work requires such a label. Space, place, city, symbol, sign. Something for everybody.

 

Biographies:

Michal Škapa (*1978) alias TRON belongs to the most expressive wave of Czech (Prague) writers with many achievements to his credit. He is engaged in countless graphic activities with the magazines “Free Magazine” and “Upstream”, ranging from festival visuals, books, CD covers for bands, web design, and the creation of original fonts, to the design of posters and invitations to arts events. His graphics projects of the recent period include Names Festival, Kick the Shit! Bitch!, OBR, the Thick-skinned Moviegoers’ Festival for the Aero Movie Theater, IFP, visuals for the Bigg Boss label, etc. In addition to computer graphics, who also produces drawings and airbrush works. He brings his vivid imagination to bear on graffiti and visual effects. Member of CAP, NUTS, DSK a TOYZ!

Pasta Oner is one of the most original figures on the Czech contemporary art scene. Ever a creative mind, Pasta Oner has, in the recent years and in keeping with his graffiti and street art roots which go back to the turn of the millenium, focused on asserting himself within the system of independent and publicly funded galleries. He weds pop-art to cartoon, transcending both categories.

Although he touches, at the core of his philosophy, on the principles of post-production, Pasta Oner stands apart from the current trend of post-conceptualism and blazes his trail in the Czech art world as a media-savvy and widely known, if slightly controversial artist.

The work of Pasta Oner presents an original, ironic commentary on contemporary popular culture. Pasta Oner’s traditional themes of obsession with money, sex, religion, luxury goods and the consumerist notions of beauty are translated into new contexts characterised by the technologisation of life, the increasing speed of information and the short attention-span aesthetics of today’s culture. It is into this world, of which Pasta – like all of us – is a part, that he brings his engaged art.

When Jan Kaláb was born in 1978 in Czechoslovakia, graffiti was not to be seen in the Eastern World. In the nineties, as the country was opening itself to western influences, he became one of the pioneer of the local scene, and founded an iconic crew, the DSK. Sleepless nights around train yards, light tubes at police stations and above all hard work on his style: he went through all the classical steps of a writer’s career. Through Europe, he made a name for himself as Cakes. Next step to the Hall of fame: New York, where he made a big impression by painting whole cars in 2000, alongside with Key and Rome. Around the same time, he found a new way to push his own limits and under the name Point, he sculpted and installed huge abstracts letters in the streets and on the walls. This was another form of graffiti, in daylight, and without a spray, but truthful to the spirit of competition and innovation of the urban scene. Those sculptures lead him to abstraction, a path he’s been exploring through canvas from 2007, using acrylic painting and brushes. In the meantime, this admirer of Kupka graduated from the Academy of fine Arts of Prague – becoming the first Czech writer to do so.

Jan Kaláb had his first solo exhibition in 2008 in Prague. Others solos took place in Romania, Argentina, Germany or in the United States.

Danny Figueroa (Wesr) new solo show opening “Hits and Flops”

Urban Spree Galerie is proud to invite you to the opening of “Hits and Flops“, a new solo exhibition in the Galerie’s Ecke of works on paper by Peruvian-born and Berlin-based artist Danny Figueroa alias WESR.

“Hits and Flops” is a new series of works on paper, sketches and drawings presented by Danny Figueroa. Also known for his large street art pieces, Danny Figueroa’s drawing practice and experiments have always been an integral part of his artistic life.

The drawing series presented at Urban Spree Galerie are mainly figurative in nature but are made of an ever-changing matter, a fragile essence where transformation is occurring relentlessly, where nothing can be properly fixed, like a fugitive steam slipping out of a defaulting pressure cooker. This evanescence comes up with their perceived defaults and successes, or as the artist calls them, their “hits and flops”.

About the artist:

Danny Figueroa was born in 1980 in Chiclayo, Peru and grew up in the capital Lima where he has been active as a graffiti artist since 1996 under the pseudonym “Wesr”. He was strongly affected in his youth by the cultural clash between Peru’s traditions and the overwhelming americanization. This is also reflected in his art, in which he brings together the aesthetics of traditional and contemporary japanese graphic illustrations with elements of Peruvian indigenous art. Figueroa often reproduces masked figures revealing their innermost part beneath the masks and allowing for a variety of interpretations. The texture of narrow lines defining the structure of his works like scars grant access to the histories behind the unique personality of every singular character. His oeuvre ranges between muralism, painting and illustration and is marked by abstract figures with mask-like faces that might remind of early 20th century futurism. Since 2008, he lives and works in Berlin.

Urban Spree Galerie Ecke:

The “Ecke” (for “corner” in german) is the second exhibition space of Urban Spree. Located in the galerie on the opposite side of the main gallery space, the Ecke is focused on works on paper, drawings, illustration, and photography, albeit on a scale that reveals a more intimate facet of the artists.
