Opening of Mik Shida: “A Conduit Order” on 28.06

Urban Spree Galerie presents “A Conduit Order”, the first solo show in Germany of the Australian visual artist and muralist Mik Shida. The exhibition will open in our Berlin galerie on Thursday, June 28th 2018, starting at 19:00.

Mik Shida was invited to Berlin by Urban Spree for a 2-month Art Residency which culminates into a presentation of a full new body of works, including large format paintings, and installations.

Shida’s paintings are shamanic “tableaux vivants” in which spiritual, ritualistic and organic elements coalesce, where temporality is transient, boundaries and space indistinct, where portals, alternative dimensions, spells and energy fields abound.

Spirits and movement are the materia prima of Shida’s oeuvre. The artist is a vessel, a conduit, through which sprits awaken, arise, and finally materialize within the paintings, within those transient spaces where the artist is allowed to conduct the dance, and is in turn being directed by the creations his paintings have summoned.

We can also view and understand Shida’s murals as spiritual beacons, large outdoor gateways meant to create an intercession with spirits.

Shida (born 1990) is an Australian multidisciplinary artist best known for his large scale mural work. Shida’s practice encompasses video, publishing, public works and murals.

“Shida explores the relationship between Ritual, Sexuality and Love. Psychedelic entities are entwined in a ceremonial act transcending the bounds of known reality. Shida works like an ancient shaman with each works being in essence an invocation, an energetic manifestation, a prayer to joy.” (Wikipedia)

In parallel to Shida’s presentation of works in our main galerie space, Urban Spree invites Knarf, Fresh Max and Mafia Tabak for a pop up exhibition in our “Ecke”.

Unhuman: Release Party

INSTRUMENTS OF DISCIPLINE PRESENTS:

Live Acts:

#UNHUMAN (GR/DE)
Unhuman will perform his first live set in 5 years, presenting his uncut vision of dystopic noise.

Human Larvae (DE)
“Human Larvae’s ability to incorporate and balance more aggressive passages of junk metal clangor, swarming distortion, and ferocious vocals with hopelessly bleak and gloomy atmospheres immediately sets them apart from anything else in the scene today, though reference points can be made to Gnawed, IRM, Grunt, and Theologian. On a whole, Behind Blinding Light stands on its own as a recording of great depth and compositional expertise, and can be regarded as a benchmark recording of pure and true industrial music.” – Malignant Records

AMANDA KNOX (Debut show///IT)
Berlin based produceer Ayarcana plays his first show as Amanda Knox, expect live, electronic sludge.

ERSTWHILE (Berlin Debut///NLD)
Erstwhile is one of the monikers under which Kevin Jansen (Svartvit, Clamor, Qualm, Ratteknaeghen) presents his auditory output. This time around the sounds are rooted in tradition, paying hommage to the greats of the eighties through minimal power electronics dirges. Thematically the project deals with the fragility embedded in our everyday lives.

Live Aktion/Installation/Performance:

Nullam Rem Natam (GR/DE)
Originating from the Latin phrase “nullam rem natam”- means no thing born, an emphatic idiom for nothing.Nullam Rem Natam create and destroy. Their actions are reactions.Their reason is absurd and absurdity is chaos. Unfolding secrets, revealing fears, abusing the psyche. Hunters of intensity and seekers of purgation. An eternal circle, the serpent devouring its tail. Nullam Rem Natam are a group of actionists, composed in Berlin in 2016.
As resident artists of Liber Null Berlin, they commit visual sins and provoke the subconscious. Ignoring the limits and obeying to instincts, they practice and perform their experiments
using sacramental and ceremonial methods.

DJS:

Espectra Negra
Espectra Negra is a very consequent project from Berlin which focuses on Industrial & Ritualistic Noise. She keeps the old industrial sound mixed with shamanic elements and sound art. After her first self-release album “Savage Justice” which included two collaborative tracks with Annie Stubbs (UK/Suddent Infant/Devotion) -vocals- and John Murphy (R.I.P) (AU/SPK/LastDominionLost) -drums- she reached serious local and international resonance for her underground power and strong political content.

AGENCY
One half of OPERANT/IOD, Agency will close the night, mopping up the sludge on the dance floor.

Odd Couple – YADA YADA Tour 2018

Maulwürfe live at Urban Spree

Urban Spree proudly presents Maulwürfe in a unique concert night!

After many months of lying around in their caves eating earthworms, copulating, assulting badgers and preparing for Phillipe Quesne’s theatre piece “Welcome to Caveland”, the giant moles (or Maulwürfe as they are known in this part of the world) will take a small break from their interspecies transgressions to grace us with a unique psychedelic massacre of (mole) sounds.

Leaving us asking the question?, how much mole is in a human, how much human is in a mole, and of course, how many humans can we fit inside that giant mole?…

https://www.facebook.com/maulwurfe/

The concert at Urban Spree will be complementing their theater show at Hebbel am Ufer/HAU : “Der Maulwurf macht weiter. Tiere / Politik / Performance” from 26 to 30 of September 2017.

Born in 1970, Philippe Quesne received his education in Visual Arts. For 10 years he designed sets for theater, operas and exhibitions. In 2003, he created the Vivarium Studio Company, and directed his first show, « La Démangeaison des ailes », based on the acts of taking off and falling down.

Philippe Quesne hunts the marvelous, the tiny, and pushes to the extreme experiences of our daily lives as well as the relationship between mankind and nature. As he did as a child, collecting insects, he now works and studies small communities under his microscope. The scenography is used as an ecosystem in which he immerses his actors into. His shows, such as La Démangeaison des ailes (2003), Des expériences (2004), D’après nature (2006), L’Effet de Serge (2007), La Mélancolie des dragons (2008), Big Bang (2010), Swamp Club (2013), Next Day (2014), compose a repertory that tours all over the world. In addition to his work for the theater, he creates performances and interventions in public spaces or natural sites, and displays his installations in the context of exhibitions.

Since January 2014, Philippe Quesne is the co-director of Nanterre-Amandiers, National Dramatic Centre.

In 2016, he created Caspar Western Friedrich at Kammerspiele in Munich and Welcome to Caveland ! at Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels.
