For 3 weeks, Urban Spree will host an installation of printed works and videos, completed by a series of events including live concerts, talks, workshops, book presentations, screenings and performances.

About OGINO:KNAUSS
ogino:knauss is a Berlin-based, independent research group dealing with audiovisual language, urban cultures and human environment’s transformations.

R>CP PROJECT
Re:centering Periphery originated in 2006 with a live-media work commissioned by the Biennial del Arte de la Havana. Starting from Alamar, a new city built in the 70s in Cuba, the group investigated everyday life practices that inhabit, question and reinvent urban peripheries produced as a result of modernist ideology. The main outcome of the project was a film-series produced through a participative methodology. Until now the group has worked extensively in La Habana and Moscow, with the production of two films, set preparatory works and surveys in Kiev, Belgrade and Berlin; and opened up research files on such cities as Mexico City, Casablanca, Marseille, Tel Aviv, Detroit and Hong Kong. The project advancements are regularly published on the R>CP blog.

R>CP FILMS

The first film in the series “Doble Forza” (2008, 30’) tells the story of a self-constructed new city built with Soviet-style prefabricated panels in the 70’s in the outskirt of La Habana. It has been awarded with the Best International Documentary at the Istanbul Architecture Film Festival in 2008 and at Sezze Videofest.

The second episode “Dom Novogo Byta“, explores the imagined and built landscape of Moscow, confronting utopian visions which emerged in the light of the October revolution with the reality of contemporary post-communist Russia. The film takes the cue from the dilapidated Narkomfin building, a prototype for revolutionary communes designed in 1927 by Moisei Ginzburg, today facing hard survival in a central plot of land highly attractive to real-estate speculators.

During the exhibition the two films will be screened at Il Kino in Neukölln.

R>CP EXHIBITION
The exhibition displays a selection of photographs of La Habana, Moscow, Kiev, Belgrade and Berlin, capturing the urban and social landscape of modernist peripheries and the inner margins of the metropolis. The textures, geometries and patterns designed by the brutal architectural practices of the 20th century are shown alongside cracks, eruptions, signs of colonization and the re-appropriation by the everyday life.
Two video installations complete the set up, representing opposite directions of research. The first, focusing on the abstract substance of the architectural modernist vision, shows geometrical patterns and symmetries being digitally explored and transformed into a hypnotic graphic landscape. In the second work, conceived as a study for the forthcoming full-feature film, the attention is conversely shifted towards the human body- “Der Mensch, das Maß aller Dinge”, following through a longer sequence an elderly hindered man slowly crossing the streets of Berlin, Mitte. A live audiovisual performance will be presented at the opening night.

R>CP OPEN WORKSHOP
More than a showcase of past productions, the event at Urban Spree is primarily intended as a discursive platform for realising the new film project Randbemerkungen.

During these 3 weeks, a series of events will involve known as well as new collaborators of the group presenting and performing theme-related works in progress. According to the participative methodology of the group, interdisciplinary conversations, live audio video performances, live sonorisation of films, workshops of spatial assessment and dérives, will act as resource-material for the upcoming film. During the last days of the exhibition, the launch of Reconnoitering Berlin will take place, a series of urban dérives that in the following months will investigate the urban identity of Berlin according to multiple perspectives.

R>CP BOOKS
The Re:centering Periphery Travelogues is a new series of photographic essays documenting the survey into global urban peripheries done by the collective:

-La Habana InT/Ext (2006) is a 5-week diary shot in Cuba, focusing on the strong dichotomies affecting the Cuban social landscape.

The basic cinematographic dialectics interior / exterior is variously reinterpreted as centre and periphery, legal and illegal, private and public…

-Exposing Berlin, is the result of a long-term observation of the transformations of the city since 2007, when the collective moved its base. The photographic essay dedicated to Mitte and Friedrichshain points at the conflation of image and spatial production in a neo-liberal urban development. The camera investigates the attempt to reinvent a unified central identity of Berlin in the place of the fragmented urban reality which carries scars and memories of a divided past.

The R>CP Travelogues are printed in a limited edition of 200 copies, available at Urban Spree’s Bookshop.

R>CP Crowdfunding
One of the exhibition’s main purposes is to sustain the future development of the project and support the realisation of the film Berlin Randbemerkungen. In the occasion of the exhibition a crowdfunding campaign will be launched to support the pre-production work for the film. Photographic prints, silkscreen prints, books and other limited-edition products will be on sale during the events at Urban Spree.

ogino:knauss // Re.centering Periphery

In March 2015, for our first exhibition of the year, we have invited the Berlin-based collective ogino:knauss to present a retrospective of their multi-faceted research in the field of urban studies. The accomplishment of 20 years of urban exploration, critical research, filmmaking and analysis on urbanization and metropolises, the “Recentering Periphery” project and exhibition at Urban Spree Galerie will be presenting an anthological collection of photographies, video installations, graphic works and live sets derived from the exploratory activity done in La Habana, Moscow, Kiev, Belgrade, and Berlin.

Tbe exhibition investigates the urbanization as developed by the modernist ideology, the related production of peripheries and the everyday-life practices and strategies of the inhabitants to live and transform their environment.

To complement the exhibition, a photographic book dedicated to Cuba will be published for the occasion, the first of a series documenting explorations in the global peripheries. This event will be the launching pad of a crowdfunding campaign to support the pre-production phase of the new film.

Novi-Beograd_web

In addition, a series of urban reconnaissance workshops will be held during the first part of the year as part of the Exercises in Urban Reconnaissancea website and an anthology book to be published this summer gathering past and current explorations in the global urban environment. Applied to Berlin, Reconnoitering Berlin is the application of the methodology in exploring the metropolitan identity of Berlin through a series of workshops. About 1 workshop per month, each dedicated to a different element of the urban complexity, starting from Berlin Liquid Cityexploring Berlin by the water.

Liquid City: 9-11 April 2015

The first seminar will explore the primal implications of flowing waters in determining the city’s identity and morphology, disentangling the complexity of urban structural processes questioning geomorphological, technical, political, social, psychological implications of water presence, distribution and access.

Subʞutan |Dj
(IfZ / Vertigo)

No pianos, scarce vocals, no light – nevertheless a tapestry of sound that reaches deep beneath the skin. As co-organizer and resident of Vertigo, Subʞutan has quickly made his mark on Leipzig’s electronic music scene and has expanded upon facets of music that, until now, have been painfully missed. His name stands for the melancholic and dark sounds of techno, going beyond the experimental to where a 4/4 pulse finds its place. In Subʞutan’s sets, hard, dry kickdrums stomp tirelessly through a post-industrial tristesse, behind which you can always clearly hear the beating of a human heart.

Grün | Live
(Dromoscope)

GRÜN is a project entirely dedicated to the biological nature of Green, intended as a frequency of light spectrum as well as archetypal symbol of what we usually name “Nature”.
It is an organic sonic creature taking shape by controlled interactions between purpose-made analogue synthesis modules, field recordings and acoustic piano parts, resulting in a deep-bass sonic form sounding like over-amplified microbiological worlds.
The project takes shape through site specific analogue autogenerative a/v installations or fully improvised sound performances by Daniele De Santis, Berlin based drummer-percussionist and electronic music producer, founder and artistic director of DROMOSCOPE.

Drøp| Live
(Arboretum)

Drøp is an electronic music project born in Berlin in 2010 by Giuseppe Bifulco, sound designer and engineer. It focuses on sounds investigation and experimentation, not that much in an aesthetic meaning, rather than in a perceptual and sensorial one, considering the sound as a bundle of informations that deal with psycho- acoustic and music therapy.

The sound is generated so far by manipulating electric circuits, lights or everything else is able to turn electric impulses into sound sources describing with thin, rarefied and abstract environments a deep fascination for the mathematical theory of the empty-set (ø). This leads the listener into an dream-like dimension, an empty set, a suspended state of mind reached through a rich narrative flow of micro-sounds, glitches and convulsed rhythm.

Founded by Marco Berardi around 2010, this project focus on a combination of club-music elements with iterative ancestral rhythms, drone ambient landscapes, dub foregrounds, noise and rough bass incursions. After playing for some years across the Dub/Dubstep scene and lately in the Techno one, he started to develop a deep interest for sounds experimentation and visual art that led him, together with the visual artist Andrea Familari FAX and the sound designer Drøp, to found Arboretum, a cooperative platform which promotes Audio/Visual experiments and an immersive experience of clubbing. Since 2012 both the projects are rooted and active in Berlin counting on several participations amongst more experimental contests and the club scene.

Valentina is a painter. “True perfection does not exist, the sense of beauty comes from imperfection.” In the attainment of perfection, there is always the need for some elements of ugliness and of madness. When the ugliness is there, it is often overlooked, either intentionally or unintentionally, but perhaps when it is overlooked, true perfection is obtained. In late 2007, Valentina Bardazzi and Mirco Magnani began to work together using the same subjects for the Valentina’s paintings and for Mirco to make videos by their first thematic exhibition project titled “Untitled for Parenthesyne Suite”, in 2010 ” Mio Son Tuo” and in 2012 “Real Dreams”.

Program:

19:00: Paneldiscussion: OstFrauen / with:

Tanja Ostojic, a conceptual artist who constantly questions international and national political decisions and gives feminism a provocative voice.

Danijela Pilic, a best-selling author, journalist and fashion blogger

Stereotype: Eastern European women want at any costs to come to Germany. They are feminine, blonde and sexy. Marry German men. For money. Google entry for „Eastern European Women“ results in countless dating services. This shows very clearly what kind of image eastern european women have in Germany.

The problem: this pictures distorts the image of many Eastern European women who live in Germany and are successful, independent and beautiful, but are not „for sale.“ How do they deal with these clichés?

We want to consider lifestyles, question the ideas of identity and belonging, and thus make a strong Eastern European woman visible.
