Heavy Mental: Bell Witch – Monarch – Aerial Ruin

Swamp Booking and Urban Spree present
Heavy Mental concert series : #1

Bell Witch
Seattle doom metal duo, BELL WITCH, have confirmed a full European tour in support of their recently released opus, Mirror Reaper. The band will head over in mid-March for a six week run that will take in their already announced appearances at Roadburn Festival. Full dates are below.

Dylan Desmond commented: “It’s a great honor to visit Europe again for a tour alongside Monarch and Aerial Ruin. We’ll be playing in cities and countries that in my wildest dreams I never imagined I would visit.”

Jesse Shreibman added: “I truly cannot wait to be in Europe again. I cannot wait to see old friends and make many new ones. The support we have encountered since the release of the new record has been staggering, and I can’t wait to play this material overseas.”

Released by Profound Lore in October, Mirror Reaper was engineered and mixed by veteran producer Billy Anderson (Swans, Sleep, Neurosis), the duo of Dylan Desmond (bass, vocals) and Jesse Shreibman (drums, vocals, organ) have pushed the band’s sound further beyond their landmark 2015 LP, Four Phantoms offering up one continuous, eighty-three-minute piece unfolding as a single track. While retaining the colossal heaviness of their previous releases, Mirror Reaper sees the band explore the more meditative, melancholy, and introspective aspects to their sound through the introduction of long, lonely organ passages and the return of vocalist Erik Moggridge (Aerial Ruin), offering a prominent presence.

Alongside director, Taylor Bednarz, BELL WITCH has created a feature-length music video to accompany the album. The film is a video collage comprised of dozens of archival films. Each of these clips are woven together with the album to build a patient, heavy, and haunting narrative. The film aims to hold the viewer in the state of a lucid dream, feeling trapped as a specter drifting through places of darkness. Mirror Reaper will be a projection for the band’s live performances, as well as a standalone cinematic experience. The trailer for the film is available to view HERE:

BELL WITCH were already confirmed to play at Roadburn Festival 2018; they will perform two sets including Mirror Reaper in full accompanied by a projection of the full film by Bednarz.

Monarch!

Since 2002, MONARCH have been France’s most recognized and active extreme doom metal band, through countless touring all over the world (which has recently included multiple tours of Japan within the last few years) and delivering a myriad of releases on multiple respected labels of some of the most punishing amplifier worship that has befallen doom metal alongside the likes of such like-minded bands as Corrupted, Noothgrush, Burning Witch, and Khanate. This has earned them the reputation as one of the most recognized and respected underground extreme doom metal bands in the scene today.

Aerial Ruin

Aerial Ruin, based in Portland, Oregon is the primarily acoustic solo project of Erik Moggridge whose
“richly evocative dark folk style makes for a head-in-hand listening experience. Yes it’s dark and minimal, evoking solitude and loneliness but also magic and mesmerizing, soothing and restorative” *. Moggridge also serves as a regular guest vocalist/collaborator with Seattle’s doom duo Bell Witch, performing and recording on select songs and occasions.

The Rebel (ex-Country Teasers) + Spray Paint, Nova Blast

No Culture x Milk Me Present:

THE REBEL (ex-Country Teasers)
SPRAY PAINT

Urban Spree
22.08.17 – 20:00

THE REBEL

The Rebel is best known as the frontman, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for the band Country Teasers. His lyrics often deal with taboo subjects such as racism, sexism, and xenophobia from first-person standpoints–sort of like William S. Burroughs leading Joy Division or The Fall through a setlist of art-damaged country and western songs. With an insane discography on dozens of labels, most notably In The Red, Crypt, Sacred Bones, and Monofonus Press, one could legitimately argue he is the greatest living song writer today.

SPRAY PAINT

Austin, Texas-based trio Spray Paint deliver a discordant squall of no-wave guitars and stomping rhythms with a bitter, sardonic attitude. Their biting, jarring songs are inspired by the bleakness and desolation surrounding their habitat and human neglect of the environment in general. Spray Paint debuted in 2012 with an angular sound which quickly gained attention throughout the underground noise-rock scene. They’ve toured Japan, Australia, Europe, Mexico, and the United States, all the while releasing six LPs and five 7”s on Goner, Upset the Rhythm, Monofonus Press, Homeless, and S-S Records.

The Parrots

The Parrots have played across Europe, the US and Central America – packed nights at the Shacklewell Arms and chelada-fuelled lunchtime showcases at SXSW, raucous gigs of elemental garage noise, feelgood ferocity and many, many stage invasions (“Everybody else gets very motivated when they see us play,” says frontman Diego). After three years and half a dozen singles and EPs, they are ready to release their first album, Los Niños Sin Miedo, on Heavenly.
Diego García, Alex de Lucas (bass) and Larry Balboa (drums) met at university in Madrid, began playing music together, and noisily hacked out a place for their primordial, loose-hipped rock’n’roll. “The idea of Los Niños Sin Miedo – The Fearless Kids – came about because in Spain it’s really difficult to make it as a rock’n’roll band,” they say. “When we started there were so many indie bands, indie bands, indie bands. No one would back us, no other bands, no media, nobody. So we got on with it, and people started coming to our shows, promoters started booking us, but at the beginning it was just our gang of friends in Madrid, working on our music, writing, singing, DJing, art, photography.” That gang includes Hinds, whose brilliant recent album Leave Me Alone was produced by Diego, and Los Nastys, one of whom is Diego’s flatmate. “Now people are talking about the Madrid scene, Madrid’s ‘new wave’, and we’re like, ‘Fuck you, you ignored us for so long!’ So we do it for us and our friends. We were scared of nothing, we wanted to do it all the way. It has always been rock’n’roll until the end, as hard as we can.”

Book Release & Exhibition: Tacheles-Buch by Stefan Schilling

Urban Spree proudly presents:”TACHELES – die Geschichte des Kunsthauses in Fotografien von Stefan Schilling”, a book release and print exhibition about the story of the defunct and cult Berliner Kunsthaus by one of his longstanding photographers.

tacheles-buch

In 1990, the artist group Tacheles occupied in a temporary legal vacuum between the fall of the wall and Germany’s reunification parts of the decaying department store Wertheim in Oranienburger Straße and saved it for the time being from demolition. It developed to a unique art, action and event center, which was legendary for its mix of art and chaos. Until its eviction in September 2012, Stefan Schilling documented the history of this unique project with his photographs. He was one of the first who joined the artists’ initiative and the last who was expelled by the police during the evacuation of the area.

Stefan Schilling was part of the the underground Super 8 Film scene in the GDR. During his time at Tacheles he worked as a painter, graphic designer, silk screen printer, curator and photographer. Is currently working as assistant professor for graphic design.

Performance: MARVA+MASCHIN-KLAN
