Pankow, Tara in Tibet live // Herzschlag

PANKOW (IT)

Pankow, founded in Florence back in 1981, are one of the very first electronic/industrial acts coming out from Italy. The founding member Maurizio FM Fasolo and his five co-band members at that time created sounds inspired by the likes of Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire and early Kraftwerk.

After various line-up changes and the arrival of charismatic lead-singer and poet Alex Spalck, the project started to become noted also abroad and a first live-appearance in Berlin in 1984 marked the start of a long ongoing and successful career for the band.

Following a few cassette-releases and compilation appearances, Kindergarten Records – in collaboration with Polygram – released a first 4-tracks EP in 1984, that included the first more accessible, EBM-Electro-like tracks (even though the term ‘EBM’ was not ‘invented’ by that time…): songs like ‘God’s Deneuve’ and ‘Wodkachaos’ became major hits in Italy. The first LP came in 1987 on Contempo Records, and was produced by Adrian Sherwood.

Since 2016 Pankow started to collaborate with the Canadian label Artoffact by releasing their first official cassette (“Throw out Rite”, 1984) and a 10 “vinyl (Times) with the first songs released only in some Italian compilations before and a couple unpublished ones.

The band is currently active and based in France/Belgium with the frontman singer Bram Declercq.

TARA IN TIBET (IT)

Berlin-based Tara in Tibet is a project of Alessio de Felice, co-runner of label She Lost Kontrol records and owner of Last Europa Kiss records.

His perfomances are waving between noise and groovy industrial, with a touch of esoterism.

Highly recommended for fans of occult sex parties, Italian police movies and dirty raw esthetics.

TIQ

TIQ is a minimal-synth party loved and supported by different alternative scenes. DJ-sets are rigid, cold, rough-edge, blind-alley and the drum machine beats always like a metronome. No matter if the sound comes from the past, the present or the future, we are more and more devoted to select the best minimal-synth-wave music, so called “quadratic wave”.

Quadratic-wave is a word game and a concept from sound physics too, but the best way to catch it is to dance it, and the best way to dance it is by being concentrated and confined in a quadrangle as Die Tödlich Doris sang in their song Tanz im Quadrat: “Wir tanzen im Viereck, wir tanzen konzentriert”.

Upcoming solo show: Futura “The 5 Elements”

Urban Spree Galerie and Art-Together are proud to announce “Futura: The 5 Elements”, a solo exhibition of new works by Lenny McGurr, a.k.a. Futura 2000.

The Opening Reception will be held in Berlin on Friday January 11th, 2019, in presence of the artist, at Urban Spree Galerie.

The exhibition is one of the largest solo exhibitions of Futura to date with more than 60 original paintings on display.

“The 5 Elements” is not a retrospective show. On the contrary, Futura worked specifically on a large museum-style conceptual exhibition, tackling the ambitious theme of the Creation of the Universe, confronting himself to the cosmos, the planets, the infinitely small, the Big Bang and the fundamental elements, producing a corpus of works that becomes a path to the exploration of the universe as well as providing a backdoor into Futura’s internal galaxy.

The works have been produced in early 2018 in Lille, France, during a  residency organized by Art-Together, a newly launched ambitious platform for the development of urban contemporary arts.

A set of 4 silk screen prints are being released on the Opening Night. The set is based on the painting series “Pure”. Each 8-color screen print is hand-pulled by Dolly Demoratti (Mother Drucker/Urban Spree Studio), signed and numbered by Futura. The 50 x 50 cm prints are only sold as a limited edition of 100 sets.

A 128-page companion book titled “Futura, les 5 éléments”, will also be released in Berlin on the Opening Night and will be signed by the artist. More than an exhibition catalogue, the book intends to share the creative path of the residency and provides scientific guidance to the series of paintings.

About the artist:

Futura is an American visual artist, born Lenny McGurr in NYC in 1955. He is recognized as one of the first modern-era graffiti writers, and the pioneer of the abstract graffiti genre. Passionate about science fiction, he chose his moniker “Futura 2000” when he started graffiti at 15 in reference to Stanley Kubrick’s movie “2001 – A Space Odyssey”.

He started painting the NYC subways in the 1970s and was the first writer to paint a whole car in the abstract graffiti style which became his signature. He was part of the famed exhibition “New York/New Wave” in 1981 at the P.S.1 (Institute for Art and Urban Resources, Inc.) together with Basquiat (a.k.a. SAMO), Haring, Blade, Crash, Quik, Dondi and Kenny Scharf. Futura has often collaborated with music labels and bands  (The Clash, Unkle) and is quite active in streetwear (collaborations with Nike, Supreme, Converse, Bape, Stussy…), toys (Medicom), and also though his own brand, Futura Laboratories. He had numerous solo and group exhibitions and is widely collected.

J.C. Satàn & Jessica93

Dawn of the Dance and GreyZone Concerts & Promotion present

J.C.Satàn + JESSICA93 LIVE

J.C.Satàn
J.C. Satàn is the meeting between the talented Arthur from Bordeaux, France (Polar Strong, The Meatards, Crane Angels..) and Paula from Torino, Italy (drawer, dj and booker of underground shows). They were noticed from their first two LPs Sick Of Love (2010) and Hell Death Samba (2011) on the american label Slovenly Recordings which had major critical and public success. For their audacious and perplexing third album Faraway Land (2012), they join the young and talented parisian label Teenage Menopause Records. In between a US tour in 2013, an european tour with Ty Segall in 2015, a China tour in 2016 and plenty of shows in France and European festivals, they released two more LPs with the trendy french label Born Bad Records, « S/T » (2015) and the brand new Centaur Desire (march 2018). As usual the band refuses to fall into repetition and instead, travels out of the comfort zone. They are exploring the musical landscapes of Pixies and The Queen of the Stone Age but never losing their own style and sound. Known to be some kind of stage warriors, their shows rise above their records. Someone talk about psychedelism, someone about punk-garage, it’s hard to define them.

JESSICA93
French one man project Jessica93 is a powerful and emotional force of hypnotic loops, grungy riffs and cold beats, all wrapped up in an impressive sense of delicate and to-the-point song writing.

Even Paris, the city of love, hosts its bleak and dingy suburbs. With the promise of magic so close within one’s reach, the lack of it becomes even more evident. In the midst of this space of hope turned disappointment, Geoff LaPorte goes on an escapist trip and takes on the moniker of Jessica93. Where others see beauty, he sees the rats. But Jessica is the coolest chick in class. She’s desirable and she has ability to transcend the mundane reality of Paris’ dirty streets. Or at least she tries. Jessica stands for all that we wish to be, but can’t. Instead, let’s embrace the dark humour of the universe. After all, it’s not for nothing Jessica93’s 2013 debut is called “Who cares”, with a picture of a bag of crack cocaine on the cover.

As one man playing all instruments, along with a trusty drum machine; Jessica93 builds his music with layers – balancing the raw and minimalist with a trippy warmth. This sense of dream and romance is present in all his songs, sometimes numbed in an opiate high, sometimes as matter-of-fact melancholia. This isn’t some pedal-fest without substance, or, for that matter, a total downer – some of those beats sounds like John Bonham trapped inside an ice box, and the groove is undeniable. Something wants to reach out for sure, and on stage this part-shoegaze-part-grunge-part-cold-wave operation of one does just that: reaches out and goes for the stars. It might all get buried in a heap of dirty clothes once back on earth, but still.

Using very little to achieve a lot – Jessica93 goes straight to the core of every aspect of his music – illuminating a brilliant song writer in the process. Nothing to hide, nothing to lose.

Urban Spree at UAF Paris 2018

Urban Spree returns for the third consecutive year to the Paris Urban Art Fair from 12th to 15th of April 2018.

We will be presenting a duo show with two Berlin-based artists represented by the gallery, Hendrik Czakainski (GER) and Tavar Zawacki (USA). Both artists will be present during the Fair.

One of the highlights of the Urban Spree booth will be the presentation of a triptych by Hendrik Czakainski (see below). This artwork in 3 framed panels has a size of 288 cm long by 160 cm high. The german artist is known for his 3D surreal visions of urban and industrial settlements, prone to chaos, uncertainty and destruction, however reaching a formal and hypnotic abstracted beauty.

Urban Spree Prints will also release a limited edition 15-colour screen print set of the triptych work, masterly crafted at the Urban Spree Studios by Dolly Demoratti. This release is exclusive to the fair and will be launched at the Opening.

Urban Spree will also be presenting 6 new medium-sized works on canvas (120 x 90 cm) by Tavar Zawacki aka ABOVE. A further step away from his iconic “arrow” motive towards geometric abstraction and hard-edged painting, Tavar’s new works are subtle trompe l’oeil and variations perfectly executed in a muted color range. We will also introduce a new series of resin cut-out works from the Californian artist.

Tavar will sign copies of his book Metamorphosis – published by Urban Spree Books in September 2017 – on Saturday 14.04 at 16:00 on the Urban Spree booth.

We will also show some calligraphic works on paper by Bisco Smith and Jonas “Sun7” Bournat.

Julie’s Haircut + Mamuthones

Urban Spree & el borracho berlin gigs Present:
06.03.2018
Rocket Recordings Label Mates with:
Julie’s Haircut + Mamuthones

Einlass: 19:00 I Beginn: 20:00
10,00€

>> JULIE´S HAIRCUT (IT – Rocket Recordings)
Active since the late nineties, Julie’s Haircut is a band devoted to spacey, hypnotic sounds. The band’s music has evolved in time from the garage-rock soulful energy of their debut towards more experimental grounds, focusing on improv and sound research, without losing touch with the groove and melody that characterized their music since day one. They have been making music with Damo Suzuki, Sonic Boom, Philip Corner, Valerio Cosi and more. Their new album “Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin” is released 17 february 2017 by Rocket Recordings.

>> MAMUTHONES (IT – Rocket Recordings)
Mamuthones may have started as solo project of Alessio Gastaldello, founder and ex drummer of Jennifer Gentle (Italy’s psych pop mavericks signed to Sub Pop Records) but soon turned into something like a real band.

After leaving Jennifer Gentle in 2007, Alessio switched from drums to air-organ and voice to create his own kind of deep psychedelia. A ritual, esoteric atmosphere soaked his first two albums – The First Born (a collaborative effort with Fabio Orsi) and Sator, his proper first solo LP. To support these releases, Alessio was joined on stage by Marco Fasolo (Jennifer Gentle’s mastermind) on guitar and seasoned drummer Maurizio Boldrin – an almost 70-year old musician who has played since the early Sixties in countless beat and prog groups including Pino Donaggio’s band (the same Pino Donaggio who wrote You don’t have to say you love me and soundtracked multiple Brian De Palma, Nicholas Roeg and Joe Dante movies).

After a handful of shows, the trio released in 2011 a self-titled album for Italian label Boring Machines. The band were heralded as prime movers of the so-called Italian Occult Psychedelia scene and the album itself got rave reviews on most music magazines and websites, even getting a 4-star review in The Times. Around the same time, Mamuthones opened the Italian tour of Hallogallo (the project comprising Neu! leader Michael Rother and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley) and played their first London shows.

When Marco Fasolo went back to his Jennifer Gentle duties, Alessio recruited Matteo Polato (guitar) and Francesco Lovison (synth), both previously with Italian band Slumberwood. Alessio started immediately working on new material and the results were released in early 2015 as a 4-track side of a split album for the Collisions series by British label Rocket Recordings (Goat, Gnod, Josefin Ohrn, Julie’s Haircut, Teeth of the Sea, etc). The EP signaled a dramatic change in their sound, now a concoction of the dark alchemy of early Can, the sci-fi swagger of Chrome and the magpie spirit of Eno and Byrne’s My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.
Soon after the release, Maurizio Boldrin split amicably and was replaced by Andrea Davì, a young drummer with a keen interest in jazz and Afrobeat. In September 2015 Mamuthones guested at the Liverpool Psychedelic Festival, while Rocket Recordings was releasing a new 12” limited edition titled Symphony For The Devil, featuring a kosmische-disco inflected cover of the Rolling Stones classic and an unreleased song.
With the new line-up alive and kicking, Mamuthones started working on a new album that will be released again by Rocket Recordings on February 23 2018 under the title Fear On The Corner.
