Frustration + PUFF + Mommy Boys

What kind of fucking combo is this! Frustration, P.U.F.F., Mommy Boys. It might look like I put these bands under one roof because of their names. But this is pure coincidence, people. When I luckily got to organise the Frustration gig, I turned Berlin upside down with the help of my local friend Isi. But even if the colored city offers many different great bands, I knew I wanted from the beginning P.U.F.F. and Mommy Boys to be the main support to the French band. It really was a mommy boy’s tantrum.

Frustration (post punk, Paris)
http://frustrationblind.bandcamp.com/album/empires-of-shame
The band is rightly seen as the pillar of the French indie scene, which is a considerable achievement given that the French’s musical treasures are often kept secret from the global scene. Frustration may never be in a hurry to release their records, but their gigs are full of urgency. Frustration is finally back to Berlin after two years!

P.U.F.F. (synth punk, Berlin)
https://slovenly.bandcamp.com/album/puff-living-in-the-partyzone-lp
In a bar where he works, I told a P.U.F.F. member it would be musically good to associate the band with Frustration without having even seen it live. A few days later when P.U.F.F.’s past and future sounds gave people convulsions at Bei Ruth, I couldn’t stop rubbing my hands like a fucking Universal Music contractor.

Mommy Boys (punk, Berlin)
https://mommyboys.bandcamp.com/album/mommy-boys-itty-auf-ex-7-2014
In many squats in Ostkreuz Mommy Boys have fulfilled my fantasies as a French punk fan going to Berlin. Authentic, terrific, straight to the point. That is PUNK!

So here we are, people. These three bands surprise the audience the first time like an undercover Berlin metro inspector surprises a newcomer. Three so unique bands that you then recognize among many others like the Berlin metro inspector among the passengers. I’m sure they will got you like the fucker caught me.

Age Eternal, Dune Messiah

Instruments of Discipline, Third Coming Records & Premium Abundance present :

Age Eternal (DE) – Release party –
https://ageeternal.bandcamp.com/

Age Eternal is the solo project of german musician and visual artist Lissa Benno. Since 2015, she has been diving into the subconscious to find her own musical language. With reverb-drenched guitars, hypnotic synths and ethereal vocals she creates a dreamy yet heavy haze. Her influences come from a wide variety of musical styles such as Ambient or Krautrock while she is also drawn to pop-music and mysticism.

“Wash Away” is a meditation about change as an universal force that is both fulfilling and terrifying. “Before and throughout the writing of the record I saw myself confronted with significant alterations in my daily life, which I sometimes had a hard time dealing with” says Lissa. The record bows down to that mighty ruthless force that is entrenched into everyone and everything that surrounds us and the potential that lies within it.

This LP is co-released by Third Coming Records (fr), Instruments Of Discipline (de), Premium Abundance (dk).

Dune Messiah (DK)
https://dunemessiah.bandcamp.com/

The man in black fled across the dessert, and the gunslinger followed. With those words, Stephen King begins his Magnum Opus, The Dark Tower. But the phrase might as well be a graphical, description of the neofolk band Dune Messiah.

Hailing from Copenhagen, the three-piece, which is architectured by Magnus Westergaard, shoots through its listener with visceral honesty. Dark, romantic and personal, the band bares itself completely, engulfing the listener in candid stories of love, loss and mysticism told with both finesse and violence.

Dune Messiah released their debut album, The Iron Oak, in March 2017. On the following tour in Europe and Denmark, the band supported American neofolk pioneer King Dude and Drab Majesty.

On stage, Dune Messiah is a blazing, intense experience. Inspired by all forms of art that deals in immuteability (from Leonard Cohen to Edgar Allan Poe and Federico Fellini), the band inescapably channels its demanding themes. It is both terrifying and beautiful to behold.

But no matter the wickedness displayed live, the monstrosities enforced by the instruments or the heartbreaking truths told through the lyrics, Dune Messiah’s raison d’être is to capture and project honesty. A concept that, like the man dressed in black, fleetingly runs ahead in this barren, truthless world.

RA (SE)
https://ramalmo.bandcamp.com/

The four creative souls in RA get their energy out of despair, loss, frustration and restlessness. They started out as a psychedelic rock quintet but after just one EP they sadly lost one of their members. The loss and their life in Malmö are shown in the, recently released mini documentary – RA – Malmö Mentality. The band didn’t dissolve, instead they canalized their friendship into what should become their debut album – Scandinavia. The album is a whirlwind of punk, feedback, haunting vocals, melodic guitar riffs and pounding bass. The album took the band out on the road and it gained a lot of attention around the world, placing them in some kind of Nordic Noir Post-punk file, together with iceage, Holograms, Lust For Youth etc. Other comparisons were made to Deafheaven, Bauhaus, and A Place to Bury Strangers, now that is gone.

Here we have the first release since the album, and the band has moved forward. This is a more electronic sound landscape, it is gloomy, it is staring, slower, melodic, almost romantic but equally intense. We find more members than the drummer and vocalist Simon, behind the microphone, more voices, less noise, contemplation. This is a band that never rests. All held together by producer Joakim Lindberg that has produced everything with the band up to date.

”We left our rough punk sound and tried to explore another feeling, a more romantic feeling. We gave ourself time to think and reflect and worked more with the song structures.”

DJ sets by Louis X Legris (Third Coming Records) & Luna Violenta (Instruments Of Discipline).

Rancune (Berlin)
reads the line between 80s-inspired electronic sounds and new-wave songwriting. Influenced by garage rock, electronic body music and most things in between, these three French guys living in Berlin can’t choose between singing in their mother tongue, English or German. Playing with an assemblage of analog synthesizers, drum machines, plus an organ and a guitar amp, the three members take turns to sing songs of love, lust, grudge and culinary frustration. After forming in mid-2014, they started playing live in 2015 and have been recording demos to document their new-found sound and becoming imbedded in the Berlin music scene in the process.

Rancune released their first 7” single Freiheit mein Arsch / Putain de Problème on the French label Juvenile Delinquent in June 2016.

Dj Magritte Jaco
Eccentric Pop, Old school Hop and happy beats, dig in the 90’z wonder world of Magritte Jaco.
The polymorphic performer has been pimping the Wrangelkiez up since 2007 leaving glitter rainbows and sweat stains with her dance band Plateau Repas. Aside from the bipolar party monster roller coaster, she develops interactive sound installations with noisy wood logs and cable salads tribute to her ultimate hero the Log Lady that was presented in Berghain. She also produces cuckoo music dedicated to algorithm and geometry with pop band SPAAM.

Hazy analog thunderstorm announced, relentless synth waves are crashing over Berlin.

PEINE PERDUE (on their new album european Tour)

Emblematic figure of the french minimal wave scene renewal, Peine Perdue is based in Paris and Berlin. Since 2012 they released 3 albums (on Kernkrach, Cold Beats et Medical Records) and toured extensively in Europe, Russia and Canada. Dancefloor meets reveries in the cold, melancholic and catchy music of the french duet, finding its roots in cinematographic phantasmagories, nebulous synthetic architectures and sensual minimal wave. Their new mini album “La Peur Belle” has just come out as a prelude to their new LP “Nuit Blanche” to be released in May.

LA CHATTE

The cult “progressive artwave band” LA CHATTE was born in 2002 in Paris through the encounter of Stéphane Argillet (Peine Perdue/France Fiction) and fashion designer Vava Dudu, soon joined by guitarist Nicolas Jorio. In a decade, three albums were recorded, mixing ice cold swaying synthesizers sequences with boiling singings and improvised guitars avalanches. Since then, the trio, now partly settled in Berlin, is leading this side project playing impromptu concerts, joyfully musical performance with apocalyptic visuals and costumes, from Paris to Madrid, Amsterdam, Rome or Berlin. They are working on a new album to be released in 2016. Saturday the band will perform as a duet voice (Vava) + synth (Stephane).

DJ NEUE K:

co-founder and resident dj at TIQ (monthly party minimal synth oriented)
No matter if the sound comes from the past, the present or the future, he is more and more devoted to select the best quadratic-wave. Quadratic wave is a word game and a concept from sound physics too, but the best way to catch it is to dance it, and the best way to dance it is by being concentrated and confined in a quadrangle as Die Tödlich Doris sang in their song Tanz im Quadrat: “Wir tanzen im Viereck, wir tanzen konzentriert”.

FREDOVITCH & HIS ONE MAN BAND :

392308_230047270392230_916093300_n

In 1998 in Bordeaux, a band called BELLY BUTTON is back from his last tour in Japan before disbanding a few months later. His bass player and vocalist Fred a.k.a Fredovitch starts his one man band by mistake after a friend booked him in his bar, and recorded his first record “KING KONG CHA CHA” one year later.
Over the years the minimal bass guitar drums vocals songs from the first recordings turned into a sampler based garage rock supersonic formula one, where 60’s acoustic drums meet drum machines and fuzz guitars get along with synths and samplers with full energy.
