Hendrik Czakainski’s Upcoming Exhibition: Nonpoint Sources

Imagine that you are a raindrop. It begins to rain and you hit the ground and flow across streets, parking lots, yards, construction sites, farm fields… Along the way, you pick up litter, oil, grease, metals, rubber, dirt, fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste, and other things left behind. All of these pollutants mix with the rain and flow away as nonpoint source pollution. » (Illinois Environmental Protection Agency).

In Hendrik Czakainski’s previous exhibition at Urban Spree Galerie, « Switch Over » (2018), the famed “invisible hand” of Adam Smith finally achieved its predictable self-strangulation and hinted towards the obliteration of the age of Anthropocene. His powerful works laid bare the rusted skeletons of what was once qualified as habitat. A post-architectural world – and beyond -, in which life subsided on the fringes, a derelict, abstract  and borderless Universum, morbidly fascinating.

For “Nonpoint Sources“, his 4th solo show at Urban Spree, Hendrik Czakainski fills his large wall sculptures with the particles and raindrops of our contaminated civilization, building his imaginary constructions only to let them succumb to the invisible and poisonous streams that run through it. Huge fracture lines dislocate high density environments, Earth is scorched beyond repair, structures are flooded with colored poisons that irrigate the veins of our industrial civilization.

We do not only see the structures, we see the flooding and the elements, we see how the artist skillfully paints and distorts the structures he so patiently erected.

Hendrik Czakainski at Urvanity Art Fair

Urban Spree Galerie will participate to the 3rd Edition of Urvanity Art (28.02-03-03.2019) at COAM in Madrid.

The fair is dedicated to urban contemporary arts and for its first participation to a Spanish art fair, the gallery has designed on 60 sqm a program with 9 artists, mainly based or linked to Berlin, as well as a solo show of works from Hendrik Czakainski in a separate booth.

Adopting a bird’s eye view, the Berlin-based artist creates large-scale post-architectural landscapes which are dark anatomical explorations of the urban matter.

The artist becomes a forensic architect, collecting evidence of disasters, past, present and future, incorporating them in surreal compositions of large proportions, creating 3-dimensional landscapes which have become void of human presence and frightfully beautiful at the same time. His creations bring us to a state of contemplation and fascination, owing to the combination of shape and colour.

Urban Spree Galerie will present 3 immersive & large-scale compositions of the German artist as well as a selection of recent works.

Please contact the gallery ahead of the fair with any questions or requests you may have.

Hendrik Czakainski returns to Urban Spree with his 3rd solo show “SWITCH-OVER”

Urban Spree Galerie presents “SWITCH-OVER“, the third solo exhibition of the Berlin-based visual artist Hendrik Czakainski at Urban Spree Galerie.

Hendrik Czakainski’s materia prima is the urban matter captured at different stages of dereliction. Adopting a bird’s eye view, the artist creates large-scale post-architectural panels which are dark anatomical explorations of the urban body.

His monumental cuts, holes, and excisions to his fantastic architectural matter reach us beyond the scope of architecture and strip down those man-made artefacts to the minimum, lay them bare, and essentially on the brink of abstraction.

In SWITCH-OVER, the artist distantiates himself from the highly densified housing settlements he has been creating in the past years to pursue a more radical approach. His apocalyptic tableaux give away few clues as to when the mutations happened, what exactly happened, how was it even possible to switch from one state to the next, and which situation we are actually in, leaving the spectator forging his own clues. Are we investigating a foregone reality, are we already processing the next move, or are we trapped in between ?

In his new compositions, we ask ourselves if humanity is still part of the global equation or if the tipping point has been already reached; if a reversal is even possible.

Most works of the show are constructed in two or three parts, creating a dynamic impulse, searching for life in interstitial space, infusing tension, and establishing a mutual dialog, a new social contract of what’s left.
