James Chance and Les Contortions

James Chance & Les Contortions live in Berlin

JAMES-WHITE-WEB

A key figure in No Wave, James Chance has been playing a combination of improvisational jazz-like music and punk in the New York music scene since the late 1970s, in such bands as Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, James Chance and the Contortions, James White and the Blacks, The Flaming Demonics, James Chance & the Sardonic Symphonics, James Chance and Terminal City, and James Chance and Les Contortions. His music can be described as combining the freeform playing of Ornette Coleman with the solid funk rhythm of James Brown, though filtered through a punk rock lens.
Born and raised in Milwaukee and Brookfield, Wisconsin, Chance attended Michigan State University, then the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee, dropped out and moved to New York City in 1976. He quickly became active in both the free jazz and no wave punk rock scenes.
His first band in New York in 1976 was an instrumental quartet with violin, drums and bass called Flaming Youth. After studying for a short time under David Murray, Chance formed The Contortions, who fused jazz improvisation and funk rhythms. The Contortions reached a wider audience with their contribution to the Brian Eno-compiled No New York collection of No Wave acts.
Known for violent and confronting live shows, razor tight musicians and jagged compositions, as well as a knack for jazz and bubblegum reinterpretation, James Chance has produced increasingly progressive and unnervingly agitated live shows. The Les Contortions have been his European tour group since 2006.

Support: Jimmy Trash and Big Daddy Mugglestone

Australian-Berliner Jimmy Trash (+ The Gunpowder Temple of Heaven, Jimmy Trash Orchestra, Trashfest, Analog Africa) and American-Berliner Big Daddy Mugglestone (+ His Cheap Paper Toys, The Mugglestone Review, Sacred Travelers, The Ass-Droids) have developed a project together out of a shared love of African, Arabic and Vodou rhythms, the use of sacred texts, performance art and creating unsure and chaotic spaces for a live audience.Working out a system to deliver fervent messages from ancient occult texts in a form of music that synchronizes the dirty synths of Suicide with mad live Vodou rhythms of West Africa, South America and the islands of Cabo Verde, and the vocal and performative stylings of Southern Baptist church services, we have dually terrified and pleasured audiences throughout Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Greece, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.

Sun Worship + Nadja + James Kelly

11742650_10152953917906615_808180894047917512_n
Thick drone forests pierced by grating guitar splinters are presented on the occasion of a gathering of international journalists and specialists of the global metal scene. A chance to meet up and enjoy black sonic intensities.

Whether in the frozen forests or in the sprawling urbanity of Neukölln, desolation will be desolation. Berlin outfit Sun Worship channels this bleakness into an icy spear of harsh beauty. The result is a kind of black metal without pretense or theatrics, a sonic landscape both stripped and dense.

With Nadja, Aidan Baker & Leah Buckareff make music that encompasses experimental/drone, ambient, shoegaze, and doom metal. The Canadian duo’s slowly moving musical dreamslugde and dirge-like drums has been released on labels such as Alien8, Important records, Denovali, as well as their own label, Broken Spine Productions.

James Kelly, frontman of Irish black metal band Altar of Plagues and the mind behind electronic music project, WIFE, will provide dark ambiances throughout the night.

DYS 2015 festival

A Project Organized, Produced and Curated by
CORPO 6 art project space & Unknown Pleasures Factory.

DYS, that stands for Dionysus – the mediterranean deity of nature and ecstasy -, is a festival that through a multimedia approach – live music sets, performances, video installations, screenings – wants to activate a powerful and über expressive “ambiance”, focusing on the dionysiac efflorescent of the art form. Taken in its antinomic dynamic: organic- non organic; analog – digital; low fi – hi fi; performance – installation; informal – formal.

Its second underlying code of functioning, and thematic reference, is the vanguard creativeness represented by the cultural city hubs, along the decades in the past century: Rome in the fifties; New York in the seventies; Berlin in the eighties and so on.

Creating an alive discourse of interacting links between researches, codes and effectiveness along the time line of the global cultural resistance against desertification and cultural homologation.

The artists have been chosen for their work round the “limen” – the extreme edginess – of their research. In term of the research of the internal dynamic within their medium, the questioning of the mainstream cultural logic, the “physicality/liability” of genders involved. Describing a polisemantic and outrageous celebration of existence.

A dionysian hymn to unity and self empowerment.

La Muerte Roja (Berlin)
La Muerte Roja is purity. Purity of sound. Purity of intentions. La Muerte Roja, adopting different approaches – tonal, atonal, improv, noise – defines, ritualistically, in a high saturated media context – performance, installation, video installation – , a sacred area of being. La Muerte Roja is an oxymoron. Death in life. And vice versa. And it means rebirth. A Circularity of simplicity. La Muerte Roja is a project by Fabio Campagna. Founded in 2011, Berlin. VV & The Void (Berlin/LA/Melbourne)
VV & the Void is a music project by Valentina Veil, a musician, producer artist and curator living between Berlin, LA and Melbourne.
The choice of the name plays on the repetition of the letter V and the logo stands for a visual vortex/spiral of void, a primal force or destructive energy or a triangle, ambiguous symbol of Holy trinity and occult summoning figure. VV’s lyrics often refer to occult and mysticism and unknown forces and energies.
The colors Gold and Black represent much of VV&V’s work often on stage.
Going back to the ancient Egyptians, Mayans, Aztecs, the color Gold symbolizes spiritual illumination, wisdom, beauty, splendor, awareness, alchemy; the opposite of black, expression of mysterious, veiled, esoteric, destructive, abyssal forces..
Her music, often described as shoegaze, drone, noir, atmospheric, goth, neo-psychedelic, experimental is a celebration of opposites energies: grace and disproportion, feminine and masculine, moon and sun, birth and death, angel and devil, light and dark, conscious and unconscious.

L.A.Drones! (Spain/LA)
L.A.DRONES! is a sonic experiment that, without abandoning strong electronic rhythm, joins styles such as Electro, KrautRock, Dub, Acid, Space, Noise, never forgetting melody, through the interaction of loops and drones, with the manipulation of these playing live, and effects being squeezed to the extreme. Voices, two synthetizers, effects modules, plus pedals and two mixers combine in order to generate a unique experience, with improvisation as an essential part of the performance”.

Live : TUXEDOMOON (Additional Show / Zusatzshow) Avant-garde / Post Punk (US | Crammed Discs)

Cult legends Tuxedomoon are a welcome exception in today’s over-formatted musical world. Born in 1977, in the heady atmosphere of San Francisco’s postpunk golden age, the band soon became a central part of New York’s No Wave scene (as documented in the recent “Downtown 81” film, centered around Jean Michel Basquiat and featuring performances by Blondie, James Chance, DNA and Tuxedomoon). “No Tears”, their 2nd single (1979), has remained an electro punk club classic to this day.

Upcoming Exhibition: “Graffiti without Graffiti” by The Grifters

Graffiti_without_graffiti_exhibition-and-book-release-the-by-thegrifters-urban-spree-berlin_1024x1024

URBAN SPREE GALERIE is proud to present its next exhibition, “Graffiti Without Graffiti”, a solo project by the European collective “The Grifters”.

THE FIRST PHOTO-BLOG BY THE GRIFTERS popped up on the Internet almost ten years ago, a project drawn from the psyche of a focused Eastern European. With the help of his friends, armed with nothing but point and shoot film cameras, The Grifters began documenting and reporting on the lifestyles of the people that surrounded them. Punctuating these reports with humor and irony, sarcasm and provocation, all the while captured with beautiful photography, The Grifters revealed a wholly new perspective on the current generation. The Grifters took an approach that nobody else was taking at the time, by portraying everything surrounding the act of graffiti, whilst avoiding the resulting graffiti itself. Highlighted by this approach is the realization that there are many more interesting moments and emotions to capture, other than only graffiti…
The Grifters started out as a graffiti-like blog with an alternative and fresh point of view, taking pride in their selection of the most prolific graffiti writers. Within a few short years it had developed into something much bigger than just one photographer’s journal. The Grifters, in establishing one of the most recognizable Internet platforms for urban culture, opened a door for a whole new way of documenting and presenting the stories of people who were once labelled as outcasts. They developed these narratives into something philosophical, romanticized and sophisticated. The Grifters not only showed the darker side of society through their beautiful photography and video, but also added a sense of morality, by way of the provocative messages and quotes that we see in their publications…

IN MAY 2014, AFTER BEING SET UP BY THE FRENCH VANDAL SQUAD, the creator and head of The Grifters was sent to prison, accused of crimes including Terrorism and Conspiracy. Good Guy Boris was to spend four months remanded in custody in the largest European prison, for merely filming people doing graffiti and posting this on the Internet. This “low blow” on behalf of the police, gave way to The Grifters rising even more in popularity.

VERY FEW PEOPLE ARE AWARE that during the time Boris spent in prison, he invited four new people to join the platform of The Grifters. This was the first step taken in developing The Grifters into an art collective. He called upon other young and talented photographers, an illustrator and a writer to join with him to form the collective that The Grifters is currently comprised of today, namely the 1992 CollectiveBadYear85EewanGood Guy BorisJames Hattrick & Thorfine. Quickly after the return of Boris from his “holidays”, The Grifters had organized a series of successful exhibitions in Paris, the capital of art and fashion, and their next target is establishing a milestone before the birth of their latest form of evolution – The Grifters Journal.

GRAFFITI WITHOUT GRAFFITI
The name of the exhibition reveals the rationale behind the evolution of The Grifters. This work is a comprehensive and psychoanalytical dissection of the experiences found in the graffiti culture and lifestyle, without the graffiti itself, effectively mirroring the credo of The Grifters. This exhibition is the embodiment of something that The Grifters have been documenting and doing, for almost a decade. The highlight of this exhibition is the limited edition book “GRAFFITI WITOUT GRAFFITI”, a landmark in the saga of The Grifters, and the first project released by them as an art collective. Each artist has been challenged with a task, to use only 36 pages to show us graffiti without the ability to depict the graffiti itself. The mix of exclusive footage, confrontational illustration and sophisticated text, helps reveal the charade surrounding Graffiti culture. This photbook will be the closest explanation to date of what The Grifters is truly about, with a limited edition print run of only 500 copies. The book will be presented exclusively during the exhibition “GRAFFITI WITHOUT GRAFFITI” held at Urban Spree Galerie in Berlin, Germany. Save the date of 16 July 2015 at 19h and join The Grifters for this milestone exhibition and book release, where you will have the chance to meet the artists and enjoy the good vibes that The Grifters bring with them wherever they go.
