“Expensive Ass Pastrami” by Jonni Cheatwood

Urban Spree Prints releases Jonni Cheatwood’s exceptional screen print “Expensive Ass Pastrami” on Tuesday, October 22nd at 09:00 PDT (LA) / 06:00 pm CET (Berlin) on the Urban Spree website and in our Berlin shop.

The print is a 30-color+ hand-pulled silk screen print produced in Berlin by master printer Dolly Demoratti (Mother Drucker / Urban Spree Studios).

This print was built closely with the artist and in total trust, based on a canvas of the same name painted in Berlin and exhibited during Jonni Cheatwood’s solo show “Tyger Tyger” at Urban Spree Galerie in July 2019.

We were certainly heading for an ambitious print, working on all the matters, vibrant colors and fabric-like textures that Jonni incorporates into his canvases; however, during the whole screen printing process. it was clear that something more was happening: a dialogue was silently building up between the painting and the screen printer.

Dolly started an immersive relationship and at some point, lost count of all layers and colors after 30, trying to reach perfection, not as in a perfect “reproduction”, but as in a perfect symbiosis between the art of the painter and the art of the screen printer (or, in that perfect example, the art of the “screen painter”.)

Having built a relationship in Berlin during the artist’s summer residency at Urban Spree for a month helped a lot to understand how the painter works and intuitively translates this into a screen printing vocabulary, replacing some of the techniques used by Jonni by innovative ones such as layers of puff ink, a special ink that “puffs” when heated and adds real texture to the print.

“I enjoyed working on this print so much because I paint myself. I like to work on pieces by painters because I can understand, I can almost see how they build it up. I’m improvising on an intuitive feeling of what’s need to be done, what’s need to be brighter, what needs to be stronger, softer, push parts backwards, pull parts forward. You can’t pre-plan it from the beginning.”  // Dolly Demoratti

Jonni Cheatwood: Tyger Tyger

Urban Spree Galerie presents “Tyger Tyger“, the first solo show in Germany of the Los Angeles based visual artist Jonni Cheatwood and only his second in Europe.

URBAN SPREE STUDIO, JUNE 2019

The American artist (b. 1986 in Thousand Oaks, California), spent a month at Urban Spree in Berlin as an Artist-in-Residence to create 11 large format artworks that are exhibited in the galerie from July 5th, 2019 to August 4th, 2019.

Jonni Cheatwood incorporates found fabrics into his canvases, which he himself cuts and saws, in order to create variations, a sense of appropriation and move away from the uniform surface of the canvas. Acting as time and identity markers, some fabrics have geometric patterns whereas some others are figurative or overly pop. The Residency enabled Jonni to source local fabrics, found in the Turkish market or in the street. Once the patchwork is assembled, Cheatwood paints blocks and shapes of colors on it, adding multiple layers of paint and agglomerating texture, freely outlining shapes to convey dynamism, movement and balance.

Jonni Cheatwood is an abstract painter whose work is about balance, shape and color and who can be related to the “Figuration narrative” movement. Here, Roy Lichtenstein makes an appearance in most canvases of the series as a reference and a cultural bridge as some fabrics sourced in Berlin include some embroidered stories derived from the American painter.

Jonni’s work is also close to the post-graffiti movement as we can also view his color shapes and black outlines as deconstructed graffiti.

Overall, his work is very dynamic, balanced and superbly colorful, while creating multiple layered & complex identities.

“Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?”
