KRAKE FESTIVAL is a festival for challenging electronic music organized by the Berlin based Killekill crew. As the name implies, the festival spreads its tentacles out over multiple days and venues across the city, presenting different styles of music. KRAKE is not about hype, it’s about music, that dares to step off the beaten track, about surprising performances and a down-to-earth attitude, far off the mainstream.

A festival for music lovers.

–––––

The Krake weekend begins on FRIDAY daytime with the legendary Label & Synth Market, a record fair bringing together almost 100 of Berlin’s underground record labels and a small selection of synth brands to present their products in the lively garden area of Urban Spree. Next to DJ sets and surprise performances rounding off the day, the raffle is a chance to win electronic music production equipment and other cool stuff once again. All profit of the raffle will go to Ickmachwelle, a project which aims to empower and teach people with cognitive disabilities to learn how to make electronic music. Ickmachwelle will also perform live directly after the raffle!
FRIDAY night sets the stage for a series of concerts and performances in pure punk attitude! Dig through wild West-Berlin’s archives of the ‘80s with scene expert Mark Reeder and ‘B- Movie’, followed by a Q&A and dj set with and by the protagonist himself. Synth-punk Petra Flurr & 89st is opening for Schwefelgelb, Berlin’s most prolific duo in classic body music tradition, while The Horrorist is gearing up for one of his raging and devastating live performances.
On top of this we are delving deeper into DIY synth art and Circuit Bending throughout the day and night with Lithuanian Moon Armada being one of the most impressive artists in the field. He builds experimental musical devices using doll heads and other objects to create an unreal and spooky atmosphere and has prepared an installation and a performance for our festival.

The Krake weekend kicks off on FRIDAY daytime at Urban Spree with the legendary Krake Label Boutique, a small record fair bringing together Berlin’s underground music labels with around 50 imprints displaying and offering their work in the beautiful outside area. Next to DJ sets and surprise performances rounding off the day, the raffle, which has taken place for the last two years, is a chance to win electronic music production equipment and cool stuff once again!

The night opens with “The Quest for a Real Hardhob“. Originally shown at this year’s Berlinale, the silent animated movie on the dystopian sci-fi tip is completed by a live score from Andrew Millington on drums and cello, and Dave Senan on electronics. During the night expect extraordinary performances in the vast warehouse-like gallery space of Urban Spree, including a rare live performance from extreme vocalist Tim Exile, a multi-hour ambient jam by Transistors of Mercy, and a sound installation titled ‘Sonic Robots‘ by Moritz Simon Geist, whose robotic sculptures produce noises in combination with live techno. While the basement is taken over by DJs showcasing the labels involved in the market, the Concert Room focuses on bands, live acts and DJs experimenting with the darker side of techno. Constantly reinventing himself as a musician, T.Raumschmiere joins forces with 21 Downbeat – an electronic band including several artists with disabilities determined to ignore genre boundaries to arrive at their own explorative take on electronic music. Thomas P. Heckmann (OFFICIAL)plays one of his EBM-fueled techno sets in between AJA‘s psychosexual rhythmic noise and the incredible punk-techno duo COAL.

We open the festival at Urban Spree, an amazing venue which combines industrial aesthetics with a sweet, personal DIY flair. Besides having a world debut show by Transforma & Anno Stamm (alias Anstam) we are exceptionally proud that we could allure the UK based X-Ray Audio Project with their presentation of their research about the first ever existing bootleg culture, which developed in Russia in the 1940s, where music was illegally copied on used xrays stolen from hospitals. Apart from their presentation some rare pieces will be exhibited and a cut on an x-ray will be produced live.

Our weekend we will kick off on the two floors of Suicide Circus with a strong focus on the interface of techno and electro with punk.

For Saturday and Sunday we will use a new venue: Grießmühle in Neukölln, one of the most underground places of the Berlin scene today, rough, loud and dirty – but with the appeal of a place run by people with passion. During daytime you wll be able to browse through records ofselected electronic music labels, at night you will find the label’s artists playing on one of the many floors there. Additionally to the musical programming there will be other special offerings such as a DIY workshop for building your own snythesizer, a screening of “I dream of wires”, the legendary documentary about the history, demise and resurgence of the modular synthesizer, performances and much more.

Krake Festival 2015 Art Exhibition

For the whole week of the Krake Festival, the Krake team has set up an art exhibition at Urban Spree Galerie.

————————–————————–
The following works will be exhibited or performed:

DESTRUCTIVE OBSERVATION FIELD by Robert Henke

11015356_987489747951763_1077713057742230039_n

A bright multicolor laser beam points at a black reflective sheet of plastic hanging freely from the ceiling. Most of the light is absorbed by the plate, turned into heat. A small part is reflected to a white screen on the opposite side of the room. The heat creates deformations and induces structural changes of the surface of the plate, which leads to dynamic and complex reflection patterns. The laser beam scans over the surface of the plate in slow random movements and leaves traces of destruction. The light patterns on the projection screen make the process visible.
By adding more and more imperfections to the surface of the plastic plate, the resulting patterns become increasingly more interesting until a certain threshold is reached after which the process seems to reverse. More destruction leads to less interesting results, ending ultimately after a long time with just a diffuse reflection of light. The installation becomes blind.

Special thanks to LaserAnimation Sollinger, Berlin, for their support.

MR-808 by Moritz Simon Geist

Sonic Robots perform electronic music — with mechanic robots! The wardrobe-sized MR-808 is a robotic drum installation, which features eleven sounds of the infamous electronic drum machine “TR-808”, which were replaced by mechanical actuators and physical tone generators.

MUSIC VIDEO LOUNGE by THE29NOV FILMS

the29nov films films create a cosy situation for you to relax and have a glimpse into their endless archive of independent music videos.

DISCO GHOST by Julia Drouhin

This French artist living in Tasmania/Australia creates chocolate records with hits from dead musicians, which can be heard and eaten by the audience.

Performing on Tuesday daytime and Saturday night only.

TESELA by ARISTIDES GARCIA (LASAL)

This interactive mapping sculpture is based on geometry exploration, and how using this path can disrupt our perception. Graphical patterns, visual illusions, dynamic geometry tesselations are algorithmically generated in realtime by the system with the help of the observer. 103 paper pyramids as a canvas to play with, changing the shape constantly like in an illusory metamorphic dream.

Exhibited from Wednesday onwards only.

KLANGWELLE by CHRISTIAN LOSERT

An installation featuring 10 motorized pendulums including 10 loudspeakers at their ends to discover the structure and spatial impact of dynamic waves within an audiovisual area.

Exhibited from Wednesday onwards only.

STILL DISCO/INVITATION by Anna-Luella Zahner

You are invited to experience a surreal club situation and become part of a seemingly social situation, which won’t develop as expected.
Since the installation can only be entered alone, please expect waiting time.

Performing on Friday daytime only.
